Help Me Decide! 3 Attachment(s) Hi, I'm a new member here. I joined because I've been wanting a Yorkie forever. In December I bought a house so I finally could get one, but I made the decision to wait for April because I have 5 weeks off from work, that I'd like to use to get the puppy settled in and started on training. So now that my time off is just 3 weeks away I'm in active search mode. I've been reading up on yorkies but it can still be hard when you see adorable little puppies to think about which one has the best features, etc. A couple days ago I just found a breeder very nearby with females available (I want a female). She just sent me pictures, so I want help with whether these puppies look nice and like they meet the breed standard. They are currently 7 weeks old. I haven't seen them in person yet but that'll be my next step. She asks $1500 for females, and there's a non-refundable deposit so I want to be sure when I go see them. I would like my yorkie to be around 5 lbs. or under. How big do these look like they'll get? I don't want to pay $1500 for a yorkie that'll be 7+ lbs. You can also see the parents, Tigger and Rico, on her website: D&T's Yorkshire Angels |
I think they're adorable. I know there is a thread on here about purchasing a puppy. It tells you what questions to ask and what to look for. $1500 is a lot of money to spend, so I would be very picky!!! :aimeeyork They are adorable...there's no way to guess size by pics. At least I can't:rolleyes: Good Luck and :welcome4: to YT! |
WELCOME! :D :D :D What are the current weights of the pups? You can only guess at adult wts - but one rule of thumb is tripling their 8 week weight or doubling the 12 wk weight. Also, you could ask the weight of parents and the grandparents. The babies are very darling, but I will say that their ears look a little out of standard to me, is it just me? If you're willing to pay $1500, you could probably find a yorkie from a show breeder. :) |
She sounds like a good Breeder. I read her website. At what age will the pups be sold? Im like you 1500 kinda high. See if she woulld take 1000 to 1200. They are cute.... |
I haven't asked about weights, but was planning to when I went to see them in person. I know from her website that the dad is 4.9 lbs, not sure about mom. I think they're very cute, but ears do seem to stand out just a tad. But they are only 7 weeks, might they grow into them? |
I think she's absolutely gogeous, would love to have her! |
She looks gorgeous:) Welcome to YT xxx |
Thanks for the responses! She just posted new info on the pups on her site, and I think based on that one of the pics she sent me was actually a male. She must have sent me the wrong one. But the one of the pics that I fell in love with is a girl and the one that's smallest. Here are the puppies with weights: Puppies Born 01/16/2009 Hopefully I can go see them soon. I think I want Star. But Cupcake is really cute too. |
Welcome to YT!! :wavey: Cute girls! Here's the thread mentioned earlier on what to ask when looking for a quality breeder http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ead-first.html |
3 females for sale :):) Quote:
welcome to YT I have 3 females pics in my album if intersted pm me Betty & Micah my love:aimeeyork |
Please see my website for lots of good yorkie info, how to buy a puppy, ect... Crown Royal Yorkshire Terriers Also, no ethical breeder will guarantee a dogs size or color as an adult when it is a puppy. I have seen tiny pups grow into 15 pound dogs, and my own little Cricket was the largest puppy I ever had, and as an adult she weighs only 3.8 pounds! There are no guarantees with yorkie pups. Sue :aimeeyork |
The female puppies are currently 1.1 lb and 1.8 lb. She definitely seems like a good breeder. I am a little concerned about the ears, but only one person has said they don't look standard. And anyway I'm not planning to show or anything, it's just going to be a loved pet. I just want to get a good quality dog for $1500. Thanks everyone for the input! |
This is a hard say. I don't know how much you know about what testing you should make sure that the breeder did. If you like I can e-mail you what I've learned. I decided to go with rescue as it's hard to find a breeder who does all the testing. You need to see what health guarantee they offer. Sorry, I didn't go to the web site as it's just to nice outside today and I just wanted to send you my opinion. |

Here is what her website says: "Parents have been Veterinarian examined for Eyes, Ears, Heart Murmurs, Lungs, Legs and Hernias and have been declared free of defects." I was also going to ask about liver shunt testing. Is there anything else I should ask? She has a health guarantee until the dog's 1st birthday. |
websites w/information..... Quote:
Please, remember that the vet works for her...she pays the vet for services. If the vet doesn't go along with basic requests, she may take her business else where. You will want to ask what testing she had her vet do to certify these things. And the one year health guarantee doesn't impress me as some of these illnesses don't show up until the pup is over a year of age. Here's a link to the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America: Yorkshire Terrier club of America Look under Health for recommendations on testing. It's an interesting site. Filled with tons of information. Please, know I'm not saying this breeder is a bad breeder, but if she's not showing her dogs and breeding only champion dogs....ones that a judge says is the perfect example of the breed....then I would NEVER pay that much for a puppy from this lady. I'm just trying to save you possible heartache with puppy illnesses. I'm not at all saying that she's a bad breeder. Just trying to help you educate yourself and not take the first puppy that comes along. Good luck!!! |
I'm having trouble finding the info on that site about what tests the breeder should do. Her dogs aren't actual champions, but the mother is from champion lines. I know $1500 is a lot of money, but really here in Southern California I don't see many prices below that for females, and when I do they definitely don't look like they fit the breed standard or they don't have papers. I always had $1500 in my head as my limit. While I hoped to find something a little cheaper, I am willing to pay that if she is a cute, healthy puppy coming from a good home. I'm not saying I'm running out to buy this puppy no matter what, but after speaking to her on the phone she sounds very legit and concerned about where her puppies go. I'm going to see them tomorrow, and will assess the whole situation and get to see all her dogs. It is actually my first time going to see puppies as a prospective buyer, so any more suggestions about what I should look for or ask are welcome. I have read the threads about it and done research on websites and yorkie/dog books. |
Since you asked..:) I don't like the size and set of her ears. Since it seems to be bothering you some, too, look around at new puppy pictures on YT and see if you notice the differences. I'm sure the breeder is very nice, but take your time:) Good luck with your search! |
I think they are adorable. Yes, I can see where the ear set is a little off but you aren't looking to show or breed are you? If you're only looking for pet quality, it wouldn't concern me at all. I know that $1500 sounds like a lot to some but I have heard that CA prices are a little higher than other areas. You might be able to find some for less but if you have to travel a lot to get them or have them shipped, it might wind up being the same amount. I would definately go visit and see what you think after seeing them in person. That's just my opinion..... Good luck whatever you decide and I'll be looking forward to seeing photos of your new baby!:p |
Sorry...another stupid question. I know there is something off looking about the ears, but what exactly is it? That they're low down on the head? That they're long? They're U shaped instead of V shaped? To skinny by the base? A combination? She has 2 females and 2 males so it will be good to know when I see them in person whether the ears of the whole litter are off, or if it's just the one, or what. I do think the ears come from the mother. Her ears look a little low. Tigger |
As for the weight issue, I feel like you never truly know. Jackson's parents were 7 and 8 pounds full grown, and he is not 9 pounds at 5 months old and still growing! I've heard many stories like that. |
The ears look too large and are not within the standard. And thats ok if she is just going to be a pet but I think for that price $1500 you could get a Yorkie that fits the standard....There are Breeders on YT that have pups right now..Check out the Breeder section...Good Luck....Lissette |
4 Attachment(s) Actually I am not sure either of those pictures she sent me were the right puppy. Today I went to see her in person, and maybe it's just because I fell in love, but she's perfect to me. I think her ears were the cutest part of her, but she also had the best personality. I put a deposit so in less than 3 weeks she'll be all mine! |
She is just adorable!!!!! Welcome to the wonderful world of being owned by a Yorkie!!:) |
Awww... she is very sweet, I can see why you fell in love. Congrats on your new yorkie baby! :luvu::hearts6: |
It isn't the size of the ears that make them look non-standard to me, it is the set of the ears. I'm hardly an expert on Yorkies, but I do expect their ears to pretty much stand straight up...the first thought that crossed my mind when I saw the first pic was "The ears are set funny." Of course, the pup could have had her ears cocked at an angle at just the moment the pic was taken...the only way to be sure is to actually see her in person. My Puddin' had teeny tiny ears at 6 weeks. She's now 10 weeks and they look like she could use them to fly! I expect she will grow into them...at least I hope she does! But a dog can't grow into (or out of) ears that set wrong on the head. Yorkie pups are adorable. Please don't let your heart take control of your head...be very careful in choosing your pup. |

congrats on becoming a soon to be yorkie owner!! :) these babies will STEAL your heart!! :heart to i would DEFINITELY make sure that you have a GREAT health guarantee!!!!! i am TELLING you, so that you don't have heartache or a TON of $$$$ bills going out down the road (for things like: liver shunt/liver issues, luxating patellas, etc.) it's very true.. CA prices can be a lot pricier than other states.. BUT, if you are wanting a pet quality yorkie (that of course is bred to meet the standard) i would DEFINITLEY reseach some local show breeders and talk with them! ;) you would be surprised and won't be dissapointed!(as long as you are doing your research) :) whatever you decide!! good luck!! and congrats again!! xo. |
Congratulations and good luck with her!! She is adorable!! :D |
She does look different on the new pics. She is a cutie!! |
congrats on your new baby :) she is adorable...i can see how you decided right then and there to get her! |
Lacis ears are tiny and they are still floppy but I love her that way!! When she hears something they perk up a bit, your new puppy is adorable. |
