please help my girlfriend bought a morkie today. i know nothing about these dogs but the puppy has no teeth yet. the breeder swears the dog is six weeks old and that he has had the first round of shots. the breeder said that yorkies baby teeth grow later than other breeds. is there any truth to that statement? any advice on what extra care this puppy may need if he is actually 4 weeks instead of 6? thanks. |
Oh boy. I don't think that he's 6 weeks if he doesn't have teeth. Missy had teeth when I got her at 7 weeks of age. Your puppy is going to need extra care whether it be 6 weeks or less. I would start researching about hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and pick up a tube of Nutrical to treat him if need be. This is the problem that I had with Missy after getting her at 7 weeks of age, and it's SCAREY. I know the Nutrical saved her life. You can lose them in an instant. As far as feeding a puppy that young, hopefully the other more experienced members will come along to offer you some advice. It will be important that this puppy eats often. Good Luck! Please post pics when you can. |
Care for your young puppy Well, a yorkie's temporary ("puppy") teeth start erupting at one month, so if there are NO teeth, then the puppy is probably 4 weeks. You should take the puppy to the vet to be sure Yes, you will need a lot of special care for such a young puppy. It is not good for a puppy that young to be weaned, but sometimes it does happen (like if a mother's milk dries up, or if she won't take care of the puppy). You need to get some puppy formula (powdered puppy milk replacer) and mix it with kibble (small kibble, I recommend Royal Canin Mini Baby Dog - it's for weaning to 8 weeks). Slowly start puttin in less and less formula over a period of a couple of weeks until the puppy is just eating the kibble. Puppies that young need to eat about 3 times a day. - More info coming soon, I'm sure. |
No there isn't any truth in that statement. You need to feed puppy...a gruel. You can process kibble with a food processer so it's very fine. Mix that with a high quality canned puppy food and add warm water. You want it very soupy. Instead of water you can substitute puppy milk replacer...that's available at pet stores. Warm it all a bit. Do not feed it to her cold. Make sure she is eating frequent meals...every 4 hours or so. Keep her warm and do not let her get chilled. If she has been given an vaccinations...it's too early for them to be effective. She still has immunity from her mother and will need the vaccine done again. Good luck with your new baby. |
And... Also, please get an appointment with your vet ASAP to get as much info as you can about making sure your little baby survives. You may need a heating blanket to keep him warm at night. You'll also have major issues with any attempt at house breaking for quite a while. Additionally, I noticed that you live in Arkansas.I can't find any thing that says Arkansas has a law prohibiting the sale of an underage puppy - does anyone else know??? |
Don't mean to be rude... [quote=bchgirl;2502329]No there isn't any truth in that statement. You need to feed puppy...a gruel. You can process kibble with a food processer so it's very fine. Do we still need to stimulate defication and urination, if so any pointers on the defication stimulation? |

Hi. I'm not sure about the stimulation part, some of the breeders on here may be able to answer that. I had a five week old Yorkie that came to me very sick, so I do have a little knowledge on the care. I had to wing it a bit when I first had her but she's now five years old and perfect so I guess I did something right. LOL. The first thing I would suggest is taking your little one to the vet for a full check up. The second thing I would reccomend is (a) getting some puppy milk from your petstore and also a little nursing bottle. You may not need it but it's good to keep on hand. What I did was feed wet food, but I also added some of the puppy milk either into it or in a small bowl and let her drink it. (b) I would get some nutrical and give it to her once in the morning, once in the afternoon and once at night. Just a little ribbon size is good. This will keep her sugar levels up and prevent any Hypoglycemic episodes. I would not take her outside. I would use a wee wee pad. Too many germs and too cold for such a little one. I can't think of anything else right now but PLEASE REPORT this breeder for selling her pups so young. Good Luck. Elaine |
 Exactly what I was going to say (about the wet wash cloth). You'll also have to be sure to keep his bottom clean, at that age, they are very prone to getting their poo stuck to their bums, which can prevent other poo from coming out, and that can cause other problems. So, use a warm wash cloth and wipe his bottom after each time he has a bowel movement. Also, based on the breeders reputation thus far, you'll probably need to be concerned about worms and other parasites. Ask your vet about a wormer. You can get non-prescription wormers, but I'd ask your vet for some, just to be sure. Because of the potential for worms, make sure you keep the floor cleaned and any poo spots disinfected. Puppies are supposed to get de-wormer weekly from 3 - 6 weeks while in the care of their breeder. |
Great help. We appreciate everyones responses. Max is going to the vet at 7:30 in the morning, we'll see if we can't nurture this little guy and take better care of him than the breeder. |
Good update Just wanted to thank you again for your help last night! Didnt get much sleep cause i was worried about the little guy! Good news though...Took him to the vet this morning and he doesnt have worms (as of now). I have some worming stuff that tastes like bananas to give him. I do have to tube feed him since he wont take the bottle, and i'll have to do that for a couple of days. He has gone pee several times since we last wrote in (Hooray ~ never thought i'd be excited about the dog peeing and pooping on the floor) He also pooped once ~ we are working on that! The doc says that he is around 5 weeks old...We are going to make this little guy stronger than ever! The doctor also wasnt concerned at this point about hypoglycemia...that's good! They gave him some fluids to prevent dehydration...he isnt at this point but they were concerned that he might get dehydrated because he isnt eating much. Thanks again! |
I am so glad to hear everything is okay. That breeder needs to be reported. Is a morkie AKC? |
Please be very careful with the tube feeding. If you are not experienced it can go into his lungs and kill him. I don't know much about it but do know my brother had to do this with a couple of kittens and unfortuanetly one did not make it. Just my oppinion but I would try hard to get him to eat the wet food so as to avoid the tube feeding. If he will eat the wet food, and he will drink water you can add the puppy milk into a bowl which essentially will do the same for him as feeding him with a bottle or tube would do. Hope he does well. Elaine |

A pup that age shouldnt need to be bottle or tube fed unless he has a cleft palate. I would make the gruel that bchgirl suggested |

Tube feeding is extremely dangerous for those who are unfamiliar with this procedure. I would suggest going to a baby store and purchase a preemie baby bottle. Look for the nipple that is slightly flat on the top. I never had success with the bottles sold for pets and after much research stumbled upon an article written by a breeder who uses this method. Sure enough, the puppies I had to bottle feed loved it! You may think the nipple is too large but once that puppy latches on there is no stopping it. The flat nipple also allows a smooth flow that the puppy can control. Good luck. |

Just seeing this today. Congrats and so glad you got him to the Vet. Many years ago, my sisters poodle got run over and killed while pregnant. The Vet did a c section and we raised it from birth. We didn't know then what we know today but I remember giving him baby cereal and he grew to be a very healthy one, (I am not recommending this), just wanted to share so that you will not worry so much. The most important thing I remember is that he could not go outside. Good luck, keep us posted. |
I got my yorkie at 6 weeks and he had no teeth he is now 9 weeks and they are starting to come in. I talked to the vet and she said sometimes they don't come in until they are 8 weeks. Hope this helps. Hugs, |
Glad he's doing well!! I'm also glad it's warmed up for him. I know he won't be outside, but still... BTW, I'm in central Arkansas if you want to carpool over and do an "intervention" on them! You know, I bought my Molly from what I guess might be called a back yard breeder. But at least the person I bought her from cared about the health and breeding of her dogs, even offering to help out when she was a little sick. I was scared enough with a 10 week old puppy. I would be a nervous wreck with a 5 week old! I'm glad he has such a caring family! |
Just checked in this morning to see how every one is going with their babies and was so ditressed to read about this poor young baby, so glad every one is helping out with suggestions and to read at end that all is going well:animal36 will keep checking for updates |
Any update on your new little one? Hoping everything is going good - Please keep us posted ;) |
he seems to be getting stronger. he is going to the bathroom on his own. he still wont take the bottle. we are going to try to get him to eat soft food...hopefully he'll take that. the tube feeding is going pretty good. the vet showed me how to do it and i watched some videos on it and researched about it and how to know when it's going down the wrong tube...we're doing good! he slept through the entire night last night. he is starting to stand and walk extremely better than two days ago...the only thing that is keeping him from going is his little nails...need to clip them. thanks for all your help and concern. I'm just glad i got him and not some random who would have let him die or put him in a shelter. ps...this is Leah...the girlfriend. |
He Leah, so happy to hear the good news about your baby. |
The vet did say his ears werent open yet...how do you know when they start to open...he is scratching them... |
Leah here...super good news! We got some soft food and gave him a couple tablespoons and he went to town! he loved it! his little belly was so full afterwards...then he passed out. http://bl122w.blu122.mail.live.com/a...B6CE23DB16010| |
