Raising littermates together
 

Just wondering if anyone has brought up 2 puppies from the same litter together and if they get along? any problems? Is it a bad idea?

I sell to people all the time that come in to buy one and go home with 2. I have people coming on Sunday to pick up a brother and sister. They do great together and are very happy to have a sibling to grow up with snuggling and playing never to be all alone.

I kept back two pups from the same litter, brother and sister. They get a long great and we have never had any problems.
Actually there are a few members on here that kept two from the same litter.
Kim, Peanut, has a boy and a girl she kept, Chunky Monkey and Jasmine.
Linda, lksdolls, has 2 girls she kept, Star and Regie.
And several other members here have litter mates.

I kept one puppy from our litter and him and his momma are always play fighting...

My 3 Biewer girls are sisters and we have no problems at all even when they come into heat. We also have 2 of Molly's puppies left and they all get along great...everyone takes care of everyone. Maddie and Megan are really close though, they stick together like glue...they sleep together, protect each other and share everything when no one else is allowed...it's very sweet. i kept back two of my own littermates to show. They have completely different personalities and get along fine. mine are eight months old now.

I had received an e-mail this morning from a family that had adopted a sister and a brother from the same litter. She was signing them up for a puppy class and the trainer said she should rehome one of them because it was a recipe for disaster. They are 6 months and get along wonderfully. I hadn't heard of siblings being bad together ... so I turned to the forums:) I appreciate the responses so much. I've shared with her your experiences and I know it has made her feel sooo much better.

Was the trainer thinking it would be trouble because it was a male and female...maybe thinking unwanted breeding or something? If they are spayed and neutered there shouldn't be any trouble.

My 2 yorkies are not littermates but my 2 golden retrievers are. I can't imagine what one would do without the other! They are male and female. I dread the day one leaves the other behind.

I kept all three pups from Chattie/Peppy's last litter. Klassie, Foxie and little Emmitt get along fine. The girls are hot tempered and sometimes get a bit snippy, but for the most part the three muskateers are best of buds.

I think it was all about them not bonding with her.. ( the little boy is her shadow), fighting, being jealous of each other.... They are scheduled to get spayed and neutered in a couple of weeks.
I hope she finds another trainer... I guess she discribed the trainer "blasting "her about the mistake of keeping them and of course she loves these two like her children and couldn't imagine parting with either one.

Im new to yorkietalk and i was looking at this post. i have been searching the net trying to find information on raising two pups from the same litter. the 14th i will have two new Morkie male pups named Marco and Meechi! i was trying to look for information on the breed and what i need to know and have before my boys come home.
i have read alot of post and opinions saying that "its a horrible mistake to get two at a time" and others saying " its was wonderful"
being that my pups are a mix, the mother being a jap chin mix with maltese and the father being a pure bred yorkie, i havent gotton a understaning on what to expect. if anyone is experienced on the mix and have any information for me good or bad i would really appreciate it.

We have had no issues with the girls bonding with us...they are now 1 1/2 and they are all as bonded to us as they are each other.

Scooby joined our family at 3months, 1 of 3 brothers in a litter. He was the runt, very small. After a month, we visited the pet shop where Choco the biggest brother remained. We let them play for a while but they were not interested in each other. The pet store owner indicated Choco's isolation caused his independence but assured us would not take long for him to integrate. First week Scooby was somewhat hosile towards Choco. Choco was bigger but tolerated Scooby's taunting. Another week or so went by and they were now friends playing and sleeping together. Choco sometimes would abuse his size dif. 3.3Kg vs 1.9Kg but normally very gentile rolling on his back allowing Scooby to wrestle from top.

Choco dominates the food/snack scene but Scooby does not eat much anyway very picky dogfood and select dog-treats, other than that they get along quite well. When we go to dog run, Choco frollicks with the others full of confidence while Scooby is vey shy with other dogs preferring to hang with his mom or me.

While there seems to be a bit of closer bonding with Scooby and his mom, with Choco prefering my company, this likely due to personalities. Choco more aggressive so loves to play, run with me while Choco like his mom more gental and affectionate.

As far as discipline, Scooby better at hitting the pee pads, Choco likes to go outside(mark) & can do a few more tricks. Choco acts like the bigger brother cleans Scooby's face when he wakes. Like a cat Choco wets his paws and able to clean his own face quite well. There can be some jealousy when it comes to attention so try to be fair/balanced as much as possible.

Guessing will depend the critters involved whether there is good chemistry. Anyway, we are very happy we got two, think feeling is mutual with the Scoo/Cho(having a bro). Thought about keeping the whole family together but the 3rd bro has a good home and we correspond with the owner. Two is tough enough if only one of us around, if need to visit vet or go to park etc...

Best of luck with your choice. Know many people with more than one dog never heard of any issues. Though if discipline and training very important may be more noticeable. We love our dogs as they are and they are fairly good but do not expect much other than companionship and their natural cutifulness.
