2 everyone with the IttY bitTy babYz hey everyone I'm about to be a yorkie mommie to a little bitty baby his name is Armani and weighs in at 1 pd 3 oz @ 3 months his doctor is worried about him but I think its because he's just gonna be really small he hasn't had any shots either I dunno bit newayz 2 all itty bitty yorkie owners with 2 pound adult yorkies please let me in on some info on ur baby like how much they weighed @ 3 months ??? How many weeks were they when they got there first shot ?????? Is it very difficult to take care of ur baby besides I know having to pay way more attention on them. With eatting, other dogs, fallen, getting stepped on, basically besides the obviouse ????!? And did ur baby have not much of a weight gain while growing ????? If u could go back would u have wanted a dog that weighed more because it would have been easier please let me know on ur experience |
Tatum weighed right at 1 lb. at 11 weeks and she is now a good sturdy 5.5 lbs. Not sure what the weight chart says about what she should have been but all Yorkies are different and have different growth spurts. I don't remember a whole lot about the puppy stages but shouldn't your's have had some of his shots by now? |
I breed on a very small basis, I currently have a 2 1/2 lb 7 month old pup I kept. With them being so small it is a worry all the time. This one became sick as a young pup and was in the emergency vets. We kept him from the litter; a) because was not sure he would grow to be an adult. b) after feeding him every two hrs all day and night, we grew attached His name is Garth, he is full of the dickens all the time and very healthy now.. I know small is what the public wants but they are still small at 7 lbs, so just be aware that you will have to be alert to their actions and get them help if needed. Wishing you the best with you new puppy. I am sure you will love it no matter what size it becomes. gail & 7 yorkies |
As far as shots, I held back on getting them, but suggest you ask your vet, it seems you have a good one. |
I don't have experience with such a small dog but Jackson got his first puppy shots at 8 weeks old. He weighed 6 pounds at his 12 week appt. when he got his second round of shots, and weighed 8.6 pounds at his 16 week appt. where he got his third set of puppy shots. But he still seems so small to me, I personally can't imagine having one really tiny (nothing against those who do) but it seems it'd be a lot harder work to keep them from getting injured from even simple things like jumping off the couch. |
My baby was 1lb 6oz at 18months. She is very healthy so far. My vet sees her every 3wks, just to make sure all is well. So far so good...she sees him again the 23rd. Good luck with your new baby:aimeeyork |

Do I with that I would have bought a bigger Yorkie? NEVER! I love Missy whether she's 2 lbs or 20 :) |
Chloe is 2.5 lbs. at a 10 months old. She has been the same weight since 5 months and the vet seems to think this is her final weight , but who knows, she may have a spurt or two left in her :) She is healthy , but with her size even something small can become major , so I worry. I take her to the vet as soon as I think something is wrong. She has had all her shots , and luckily had no reaction to them ( I didn't hold off on her first shots because I had not found YT yet , so I didn't even think about that) But I have been waiting till she is a year old to have her extra teeth removed. She doesn't try to jump off beds or sofas ( anymore) and she seems to have learned her limits around the house , but I still have to watch her and can't ever leave her unattended on the sofa or any place high. I always worry if alot of people are over that she will get stepped on , so she is either in my arms or in her X pen ( still in the room with us) so no one can step on her.You have to be prepared to watch a tiny one as much as you would a baby. I do like the fact that she is small , I mean the fact is I wanted a small dog , I just had no realistic idea about how small she actually would be  but I wouldn't give her up for anything I love her to pieces :D good luck with your new baby:) |
My itty bitty baby is 18 weeks and weighs 2.3 lbs. He had an appt at the vet 3 weeks ago and he was 1.5 lbs, then an appt this week and he is now 2.3, so he has gained almost a whole pound in just 3 weeks! My vet was very pleased. Because of his small size, my vet seperated all of his shots (instead of giving him 2 at each 3 week visit).. but he has been able to get up to date on all of his shots! He is just as healthy as an ox, and I highly suggest getting your little one's shots started immediately!! |
My Peanut was 11 ounces at 11 weeks old... she is now over a year and 1/2 and is about 3 pounds, 10 ounces. ;) |
My baby is about 3.5lbs at almost 2 years old. I would say that they are just like babies, you need to watch them very closely. They get cold very easily, low blood sugar. They are VERY fragile, if you have small children I would not recommend a pup that small, even if you have larger dogs I don't think it would be safe. Personally if I was in your situation I would try to get a pup that was a bit larger, I wish mine was more larger and sturdy! Good luck regardless! |
there is really no guarantee in weight until they reach adult age. I've had a girl who weighed 14oz at 12 weeks, we were so worried that she would not be able to tick the 2lb mark, but she ended up a lil over 3lbs, very chubby girl though. and my girl dolly on the other hand has done her growing during the younger puppy age. she just turned 3 and weighs about 2.5lbs. lots of the tiny ones are just as healthy, but they still need extra care compare to standard sized ones, their bones are very fragile, their body temperature drop down fast during cold winter, their blood sugar level are harder to stablize thus have to be fed more often, the list goes on and on... |
I just got my first yorkie and I am scared. Hello I just got my first baby girl she is 1pd 5oz at 11 weeks .I only got her last Saturday so it been 5 days. she had all her shots but she will not eat on her own or drink. I took her to the vet and he said he was worried about her because she is so small. she sleeps a lot. she will cry when she is in her crate to go to the bathroom. I don't know what to feed her. the vet gave her royal canine recovery, but she will not eat it. I also give her maple syrup for her sugar. can anyone help me. she will walk around but not for long she wants to be held. |

hi she is eating nutri cal I got her from puppies 234. have you every heard of metronidazole and L-carnitine? |
Quote:
Metronidazole is an antibiotic, which some times and certain dogs have a very sensitive stomach to it. I do not know what L-carnitine is used for? Is she taking both of these? What else did you Vet say? |
no puppies 234 is a lot of breeder. its online . one of the breeder told me to use these things . not the vet, so I was not sure about them. |

Honestly being so tiny at 11 weeks, she can go down hill fast (as you know)... I saw on your other post that you said the Vet might think she has a liver shunt? |
he said he did no test,. so he not sure but because she is not eating she might. she is so cute she climbs on me to find a place to sleep. |

When we first got our little one he wouldnt eat either so I bought some canned dog food heated it slightly in the microwave a little at a time and would open his mouth smear it on his tongue and hold his mouth shut till he swallowed to keep him from spitting it out. Also had to use a syringe and force water down him but after 2 days of this he eats seemingly all the time..Gl hon. ;) |
she eats every two hours but I am making her eat and drink. she will not eat on her own. sorry for the confusion . |
I have been doing the same thing for sixs days. some time she will lick the baby food but thats is. everyone says she is fine but I am scared. this is my first yorkie. I want her to eat. but she will not unless I make her. |
Do you know how to start your own thread? Go to the top of the forums where it says new thread and click it and youll be able to type it out. i think you would get more help that way. I think your baby should be at the vets |

Do you know how to do that? :) |

I have a ton of recomendations already, pick up some cat bells so that you can attatch them to some sort of harness and hear where he is. if you cannot find a dog harness that fits, use a farret harness:) do not put him on anything that he could not get up on by himself. They do not realize how tiny they are:) Maddie had her first shots at 11 weeks, and has done fine with all of them, but they were only done 1 at a time not series of shots on one day. She is great with other dogs, and is the boss in my home but of coarse watch bigger dogs. Nutrical is great to have on hand. Oh and I made her a safe zone with an x pen, where she has everything she needs and can be safe when I cannot be right with her. I would reccomend donating a corner of your home to your baby too so that he can have a safe area or a spot to have quiet time:) I like to use the food processor to chop up the dry food because Maddie is having a hard time eating it otherwise, the breeder softened it but I like to just chop it to smaller bits. She is a piggy and eats alot :) she is growing pretty close to the chart so far but they all grow at their own rate, you dont want them to stop gaining at this point, even if it is only a small increase, the increase it good. I hope that this helps you a bit with some of your questions. :) |
Just a suggestion... Lola was 1 lb. when I got her at 3 months, and now is 2 years old, and weighs a little over 4 lbs. I was hoping she would get a little bit bigger, but it's fine the way she is. When she was super small and young, she struggled with hypoglycemia and would have to go the emergency vet to help her. That's really the only issue I had with her. Here's my suggestion: a friend of mine, knew another Yorkie owner who accidentally stepped on her baby and broke her babies neck!!! So terrifying!! The little one ended up being fine later, but still very scary!! I couldn't even imagine. She suggested to put a bell on the collar of small dogs, so you know where they are. Lola likes to hang out with me when I'm cooking/doing dishes in the kitchen, and I used to worry that moving around I wouldn't be able to see her. Wearing a bell really helped. I'm sure this is not anything new to many yorkie owners, but I thought I would just suggest it anyway. Especially with such a little one, you need to be very careful. The bell also helps for other people who may not be looking at the ground when walking. Good luck!! |
