He is so cute. I hubby warming up to him? |
What a beautiful face! He's adorable!! Congrats! |
Carson is adorable. Don't get your hopes up for after neutering. Sullie is still marking. |
Hubby is warming up for sure, I knew it wouldn't take long - and with that face! Thank goodness for the belly band - just took him upstairs to show a neighbour, and he lifted his leg and peed for about 20 seconds. Except I have to now wash the band, cause it soaked right though. Using a bandana now. |

Yeah, I used a panty liner - no holding lots of pee in that. How often will a healthy dog need to pee (not mark), as I would like to take the band off and either walk him or put him on the pad. Seems like a silly question, however, Oscar wasn't healthy for a long time and he peed almost every hour. Oscar never did mark anywhere, except when he went in the wrong spot (maybe every 4-6 weeks) it was a full on pee. When Carson marks or pees in the wrong spot should I say anything, or just a loud deep NO. Oh yeah this little guy hasn't made a peep, we don't even know what his bark is like. Hey, not that I am complaining. Going to start some simple training tonight (sit, stay, come). He is a doll, right now he is sitting on my lap with his two front paws on the edge of th desk - like he is watching me type. No kisses yet, but lots of nose to nose. On more question, his breath is bad (really bad) - breeder had a couple teeth pulled yesterday, would this cause bad breath? As I don't think a one year old on dog food should have bad breath. Oscar's breath was awesome, but I brushed his teeth 2-3 times a week - he also didn't get any people food (except his home-made diet). Going to start Carson on teeth brushing, just need to get a new toothbrush (don't want to use Oscars - that is going into his special box). Thanks all for the advise. Geez, you'd think I never had a dog before - but it sure is funny starting from scratch when you had your last baby trained so well. |

I think a healthy dog should be able to hold it at least 4 hours, during the day, and probably longer. Joey uses a pee pad, so I really don't know. They say 1 hour for each month of age, and since he's 12 months that would make 12 hours, but that sounds like too long for the daytime. Also moving is traumatic to him and he will be excitable. I probably would try to take him out every 3 to 4 hours, and drain him silly. Dogs love a routine, and you can gradually increase the amount of time between walks. This also gets rid of his anxious energy, and his need to mark. If you catch a dog peeing in the wrong spot, it's OK to say No, and take them to the appropriate spot. Some breeders with unneutered dogs, put a large soda bottle or bleach bottle filled with water, in the center of a pee pad as a marking post. While you can direct them to pee in the correct place, studies have shown that correcting marking behavior is almost impossible. Extremely aversive measures have been tested in the past, and nothing really works, but I would still say "No." Concerning his bad breath, when you do the neutering make sure he doesn't have any more double teeth, this can cause a food build up and bad breath. Teething itself can cause bad breath, and if he just had some pulled. the blood and healing would cause bad breath, I'm sure it's not from tartar yet. Most Yorkies don't lose all the baby teeth on their own, and so they often get the double row, I'm surprised she had the teeth pulled because this is usually done during a neuter because they need to be put out, so I would have the vet check. Lots of us have been using Petz Life gel, it's said to soften tartar, and you can brush the teeth later. Don't use the Petz Life as toothpaste though. I also recommend a hard chew stick, like a Bully Stick, to scrape the teeth. I use the Petzlife, and wait for 30 minutes and give Joey a Bully Stick and I believe this helps keep tartar off, in addition to brushing three times a week. He's 2 ½ and has great breath, and white teeth. Any company can call their product a Bully stick, I only use the Merrick brand as, they are super hard, and are more of a chewing devise than a food product, I mean some sticks are so soft, a dog can eat them in a couple of hours. |
