Yah, MollysMum, I'm leaning heavily in the same direction. The best of both worlds would be for the breed standard to change so that we could show without docking their tails. I've raised 3 skinkids and I understand...and can handle...the infliction of necessary pain on a little one...the sting from the immunization is much less painful than suffering through the disease, for example. But inflicting pain unnecessarily...I remember when I was a child my uncle had his boxer's ears and tail done and I think I was in more pain over it than the dog was!! This is just something I can't see myself doing to a pup. |
Here in the UK, docking is banned - and I'm so glad! Lucy's tail is part of her personality, and she uses it to show so many different emotions. One of the loveliest sights is her little tail going round and round like a helicopter blade when she's playing on the beach. I certainly wouldn't want her to be without a tail. |
I agree sweetviolet..if it was for medical reasons i could understand, but just to make the breed 'look right' seems uneccessary to me...its so nice to see westies and cairns with long tails as well..there are 2 near me and they have beautiful long tails. I think the UK has done the right thing banning docking,but thats it, i wont say anymore or i will start to get into trouble again, like i did once before!! |

If tail docking is prohibited in the UK, what do they do for the show ring? Has there been a change in conformation requirements or are dogs with tails disqualified? |
I believe that requirements for shows are that they are 'with tail' - although it may be that older dogs can appear if they've been previously docked (not sure precisely when the law was changed, but it seems a good few years back - 3 or 4, maybe?) Someone wiser than me will be able to give a more accurate answer, I'm sure. |
I had Adie's tail docked at three days old by her breeder, but there was a mix-up and Skeeter's tail didn't get docked. By the time I found out about it it was too late for the breeder to do it. I debated about having his tail amputated when he was neutered and posted the thought to the list. I got an education and a half! Although I like the look of a docked tail a lot better than the look of the full tail the full tail will grow on you. As one of the posters on my thread said: It is a shame for an owner to inflict pain on an puppy just because of their own vanity. THAT got my attention! |
The law was changed here in April 2007. Any dog born after that date is not allowed to be shown with a docked tail. Dogs born before then who are docked may still be entered in shows. Some one mentioned Cairns & Westies. Neither of these breeds have ever been docked in this country. I know as I breed & show Cairns & have judged both breeds. Their tail is supposed to resemble an upturned carrot, neat & quite short naturally, never docked. A long tail, especially one that curls over the back, is a breed fault. xx Meggie |
I am a little confused that if it is banned in SA then how can tail docking be enforced in the show ring? I would do more research in that part of the country. Then have a better idea as to what to do. And i woul dnot subject a puppy to docking if older then a few days. :thumbup: |
1 Attachment(s) My girl had a litter and one was not expected to make it and they could not dock her tail. We decided we were going to keep her since she was our miracle pup. We had so many inquiries from people coming to look at pups if she was for sale because they absolutely loved the tail. The vet told us that we could get it docked when she was an adult and it is considered a surgical procedure. . . we dont have to worry about though cuz her tail stays. |
