Running with your yorkie? I was wondering if anyone runs with your yorkies? I'm going to start running with Smokey. He is a boundless form of energy and loves to run and I could use the excercise, so I think it would be good for both of us. He's not teeny tiny either. He's 13 lbs, so he should be okay and I'm not going to be running for long distances either. I was just wondering if anyone else has used their dogs as a running partner. |
I am trying to lose a little weight so I have started jogging and I take chachi with me. He loves it. Right now we just jog a couple of blocks but when Its warmer we may do more |
My girls can walk 1-2 miles no problem, and they do run for parts of the walk too. My husband also runs back and forth with them on a soccer field and they will do that for an hour or so, they love it! They are 4 and 6 lbs, so I'd think with some longer legs :) on your 13 pounder he'd definitely be able to keep up with you for quite awhile! Have fun! |

That's another reason I want to run with him... I'm trying to teach him to run/walk WITH me... not drag me. |
Just one word of caution. Please take note of the terrain you are running on. If it is rough or stony and his paw pads are not toughened up he may need to start very gradually as it may make his paws very sore. He should be conditioned a bit at a time |
Wow, I was just going to post about this today! Wrigley has sooo much energy. And yesterday he ran 1 1/2 miles with DH and I. Then DH took him home and I ran a mile more because I figured that was more than enough for Wrigley to do. He is 7.3 lbs as of 2 weeks ago at the Vet and is 8 months, so he is probably mostly done growing for the most part unless he has a growth spurt. If he could run say up to 3 miles, would that be a bad thing for him? Yesterday at the end of a mile and a half he was wanting to go on with me instead of inside with DH but I was worried that going too far would be bad for his little body. DH had him run on the grass as much as possible. He was nice and tired last night though :) |

We went through this with our other yorkie. He ripped open the pad of his paw and we struggled with getting it to heal for almost a year because it kept ripping open and he wouldn't let us wrap it or put socks on him. Don't want to go through that with another one too! |
I run with keely. And before i lead trained her, it was almost an impossible task. It would have been so easy for her just to go under my feet and get stepped on! And the little devil tried going after my shoelaces once:rolleyes: Not cool. Oh and when she would stop to sniff something out of the blue, it wasnt nice either..lol.. Lead training is something you should take into consideration. |
I love to run with my guys. They get so excited they land up tripping over their own feet. Sometimes I wonder if they'll get hurt, but so far no problems. |
I would think they'd be too small to keep up. Their legs move so fast when we are walking as it is. |
Mine, 11lbs and 13lbs, will walk 3 miles in the park. I think they would love to run but I'm too old and FAT so they have to settle for walking me. |
We walk and have little runs in between. :) |
