Running with your yorkie? I was wondering if anyone runs with your yorkies? I'm going to start running with Smokey. He is a boundless form of energy and loves to run and I could use the excercise, so I think it would be good for both of us. He's not teeny tiny either. He's 13 lbs, so he should be okay and I'm not going to be running for long distances either. I was just wondering if anyone else has used their dogs as a running partner. |
I am trying to lose a little weight so I have started jogging and I take chachi with me. He loves it. Right now we just jog a couple of blocks but when Its warmer we may do more |
My girls can walk 1-2 miles no problem, and they do run for parts of the walk too. My husband also runs back and forth with them on a soccer field and they will do that for an hour or so, they love it! They are 4 and 6 lbs, so I'd think with some longer legs :) on your 13 pounder he'd definitely be able to keep up with you for quite awhile! Have fun! |

That's another reason I want to run with him... I'm trying to teach him to run/walk WITH me... not drag me. |
Just one word of caution. Please take note of the terrain you are running on. If it is rough or stony and his paw pads are not toughened up he may need to start very gradually as it may make his paws very sore. He should be conditioned a bit at a time |
Wow, I was just going to post about this today! Wrigley has sooo much energy. And yesterday he ran 1 1/2 miles with DH and I. Then DH took him home and I ran a mile more because I figured that was more than enough for Wrigley to do. He is 7.3 lbs as of 2 weeks ago at the Vet and is 8 months, so he is probably mostly done growing for the most part unless he has a growth spurt. If he could run say up to 3 miles, would that be a bad thing for him? Yesterday at the end of a mile and a half he was wanting to go on with me instead of inside with DH but I was worried that going too far would be bad for his little body. DH had him run on the grass as much as possible. He was nice and tired last night though :) |

We went through this with our other yorkie. He ripped open the pad of his paw and we struggled with getting it to heal for almost a year because it kept ripping open and he wouldn't let us wrap it or put socks on him. Don't want to go through that with another one too! |
I run with keely. And before i lead trained her, it was almost an impossible task. It would have been so easy for her just to go under my feet and get stepped on! And the little devil tried going after my shoelaces once:rolleyes: Not cool. Oh and when she would stop to sniff something out of the blue, it wasnt nice either..lol.. Lead training is something you should take into consideration. |
I love to run with my guys. They get so excited they land up tripping over their own feet. Sometimes I wonder if they'll get hurt, but so far no problems. |
I would think they'd be too small to keep up. Their legs move so fast when we are walking as it is. |
Mine, 11lbs and 13lbs, will walk 3 miles in the park. I think they would love to run but I'm too old and FAT so they have to settle for walking me. |
We walk and have little runs in between. :) |

I run with Buster during the warm months. He can go for a couple miles without a problem, and sometimes he'll hardly even be panting after a long run. I just have to be careful to hold the leash out to the side while I'm running so I don't trample him. For about the first block he bites at my leg because I think he thinks I'm running away from him. But then he gets the hang of it and really loves it! I've also seen some people train their Yorkies to use treadmills. |
what about water? do your dogs need a drink when running, esp in summer? |
Wow, I was going to post the same thread today! I started a running program with Cash last week. The program is in the Shape magazine and it starts really easy, 10 minute walking warmup, 1 minute running, 3 minutes walking x4. It gets progressively more difficult, e.g. tomorrow the ratio changes - we are running 3 minutes and walking 2 minutes. By the end of 12 weeks, you can run more than 6 miles (10 kilometres). I take Cash with me every time since we are moving into a flat on Friday and he will need the exercise, so I am getting him used to it now. He loves the chance to get outside and broaden his horizons and he is getting pretty good with running beside me and not tripping me. Hehe, when I see he is straying into my lane, I just say "Where are you walking?" and he goes back to his side. I also use a command to signal that we are changing our pace. The program is pretty tough, but he holds up better than I do and I think that the running will help immensely when he needs to adapt to living in a flat. I hope he will be fine to do the 10kms since he is about 8.8lbs. |
I actually asked my vet about this when we went the other day, and she said that there aren't any physical problems that Yorkies will get from running (like who German Shepards have joint and hip issues that can be made worse by running often). But that he should be fine especially since he is 7lbs and not a tiny yorkie, as long as it builds up gradually. I won't take him on my runs that are any longer than 2 miles or so though. I hate when I go for a run and decide not to take him with me, because I think he will be too tired (like if I had him run with me the day before, or if I am going farther than 2 miles), because he gets angry/sad when I don't take him on a run. He knows my routine of putting my running clothes and shoes on, and my garmin watch and stuff on, and he starts getting excited and goes to the door to have his leash put on lol. So on those days when I make him stay back I feel bad :( But then I take him for a walk later :) |
Oh, and also I decided that he should always be either right beside me running or in front of me while we run, if he starts lagging behind then we slow down and head home so I can drop him off and then I can go on and run more. That will kind of be a way of telling if he is doing okay or not. He is getting much better at running right beside me and not pulling though, which is good. I think it is because he is really enjoying running. He has SO much energy. haha but truth be told, he is usually way faster than my 12-14 min mile :) so he usually is making ME go faster than I would. |
