Pure breed Yorkie or Yorkie Poo ?
 
Hi everybody,
This is wonderful forum and I really enjoy to read about all aspects of Yorkie's life.
We are planning to bring puppy but not quite sure what to chose. I had dogs before but it was big breeds. So I don't have experience w/toy dogs.
My consideration is to have dog that i don't need to walk him, who doesn't shed, and good with small kids.
I personally like Yorkie but i heard that they shed. Is it like this ? For this reason i was told that Yorkie poo is better (don't shed) and has better personality.
Pl help me to make decision with shearing your opinion and experience.

I have never heard of a Yorkie shedding. They are known not to shed.
Not having fur but hair, very much like a humans. I think you were given
wrong information on this.
Yorkie's have wonderful personalities. They are very intelligent and will
challenge you daily. Only you can decide what breed you want.
No one can make that decision for you. Just be sure, whatever you
decide the puppy comes from a good breeder.

The only time one of my two yorkies has ever lost hair was when he had a skin condition that had to be treated by the vet. I would get a yorkie

I agree with Archie. Yorkies are known for not shedding. My husband has severe allergies and we specifically chose a Yorkie because the Doc recommended the breed due to them not shedding. Good Luck with you Puppy Search. :)

Whoever told you that a Yorkiepoo is better if you don't want shedding is wrong. Even if Yorkies did shed, as soon as you mated it with a poodle there would be no way to know which quality you would get. People who sell mixed breeds often mislead people about this, but Yorkies don't shed, they do require grooming time, and so do poodles. I don't think Yorkies are one of the best dogs for families with young children, and unless you take special pains to teach your children and friends how to behave around the dog, it could be a bad match.

Yes it is good to do a lot of research before choosing a breed.

I like your link, I filled it out and it comes with 4 choices. They were all my favorite dogs!

Actually, a poodle is a better dog to have for allergies. The sad thing is my oldest yorkie does shed very bad. When I bathe her OMG, the tub is a mess, and when I'm just holding her(I keep her hair short) and I have a white shirt on, I have dog hair all over it from her.

Well Im going to disagree with you a little bit. :p I have both a toy poodle and a yorkie poo. My poodle is THE best dog I have ever owned. She is smart as a whip and has the best personality that I have ever seen on a dog.(0f course Im a little bias). My yorkie poo is only 4 months old and he too has a great personality, Im not saying that yorkie's dont but he is definitly taking after the poodle side on that. He is more spunky and stubborn than my poodle is so Im guessing that is the yorkie side of him. In my opioin he is The best of both breeds (despite what most say usually doesnt happen with mixes :rolleyes:). They are BOTH great family dogs and I would recommend one to anyone who asked about them in a heartbeat.
Of course whatever breed you decided on PLEASE do alot of reseach and try and find the best breeder in your area.

It sounds like your Yorkie has allergies, this isn't normal. It's possible that something else is going wrong too. Low thyroid would cause this.

This is not the norm. I have never heard of a Yorkie shedding excessively
like this. Buddy will be 5 in a couple of days and I don't think he lost
a hair in all that time! Very strange.
Has his thyroid been checked? Is this a full breed Yorkie?
Only a suggestion. Can't think of anything else.

I'm not saying that when you mix a dog you don't get a little of this or that, I'm just saying a breeder can't "plan" for that. While your dog got the "best" of both breeds, she could have easily produced a dog that had the "worse" of both breeds. Purebreds are not necessarily better than mixed, but the results are more reliable. Glad it worked out for you!

i don't think there are dogs that do not need to be walked!
maybe not to the extent that larger breeds need to exercise, but i think all dogs enjoy and need the exercise to stay healthy and happy.

milu is so happy whenever we go on walks! her little butt and tail just wiggles non-stop! it always makes me smile :)

i would recommend looking for a larger yorkie (at least 5lbs) because the little ones are really fragile and i think you will worry a lot about them.

i don't have any kids. but milu's pretty small (~3lbs last time i weighed her) and i worry about her A LOT!!! she insists on sleeping with us at night, and i don't sleep very well, because i wake up all the time to make sure she is not crushed!!!!:eek:

the size thing might be something you want to consider as well. although there is no way to know just exactly what size they'll turn out,(milu's parents' are both 5lbs) but generally the parent's size is a good indication of what the puppy's size will be.

I agree with you there. :)
But that too can hold true for purebreds right? (not debating just asking)

Yes, so a good breeder has to be careful when selecting her breeding stock, she could have a grand champion show dog, but if she breeds that with a poor quality yorkie, the offspring, would be a mix and may or may not have the standard qualities that Yorkies are known for. However, if a breeder is breeding two dogs that are standard, the chances of the offspring also being standard are much higher. Genetics are tricky, and sometimes a recessive gene shows up. This is why good breeders study the pedigree of a dog, it enables them to understand more fully the traits or genetics in the background.
