Do any of you have kids and if so what age where they when you got your Yorkie Just a curious question for me as i have a small child my self, |
I have 4 they are 11,9,7 and 5. I got my toy poodle when my 5 year old was 3 and he did just fine. He needed supervision obviously when handling puppy but if taught correctly kids learn quickly how to handle pets. When Tucker joined us in Nov. they were old pro's :). |
Our daughter turned 3 just days after we got our Rocky (he was 8 weeks old) and she has been fine with him but needs CONSTANT supervision, not because of him but because like all 3 year olds she would be touching him all day long if I let her. So we have certain times during the day when she is allowed to play/pet him, the rest of the time she is not allowed near him! |
My Daughter was 5 when we got our yorkies |
My 23 year old dtr was born when I had Zorro so she was taught very early how to handle dogs, then when I got gracie she was 5 and I took her to the breeders home along with my 5 year old niece and she was impressed on how gentle and well behaved the kids were. She put all 4 puupies in the kitchen and the girls sat on the floor and played so nicely with them. I am a firm believer that if you teach your children to be respectful and gentle then they can have a small dog. |
My oldest son was just turned 1 when we got Ciera. Our other son came along one year later. Like posters said before me, you have to teach them how to be respectful and how to handle them early and they should be fine. |
thanks for your replies everyone, I have an almost 2 year old and some ppl were telling me he was a little young for a puppy, but as you said, they just need to be taught how to treat animals, and we do have 2 border collies, but they are outside dogs, but still he is very good with them. it all logic, supervision |
Mia was 3 and Lucia was almost one when we got Twinkle....as others have said, as long as there is constant supervision it can work well. My girls are growing up with a huge amount of love and respect for animals xx xx |
My boys were 10 and 13. :woof: |
My daughter was just a little over 2yrs old when we brought Stormy home, before Stormy we had a shihtzu puppy and with him we taught her that you do not pick up the puppy without mommy and daddy and you touch the puppy gently. My daughter is amazing with Stormy.I think what helped us is that we had a parrot before so she knew that she had to be very gentle with handling him :) |
3 Attachment(s) My 4 kids were 10 months/2yrs/7yrs/10yrs when we brought Mika home at only 8 weeks old! We have always had dogs since before my eldest was born, some big some smaller, but none as small as Mika. Although we breed staffs so they have been around newborn puppies too. Its very important to teach children respect in all areas of life and I believe that pets are great way of doing just that. I never give my children the opportunity to be too rough with the animals and I've never had an incident were either the children or the pets have hurt one another. Congrats on deciding to bring a new family member into your home! |
My son was 12 when we got Mia and he is so good with her, and he has a Sheltie of his own since he was 8. Scrapy, the Sheltie, has slept with him every night since he got him...:) |
My children were 8 and 10 when we got Tatum but I already had a toy poodle when they were born. I think having a small dog at that age was wonderful for them. They were taught how to respect animals by having one in their daily lives. On the other hand, my nephews are sheer terror for Tatum. She likes to run and play but the boys are so loud and try to lunge for her, which she doesn't like. I have to always be on them to be nice to her and then she'll play with them. They have been raised with a big lab though so are not used to being gentle with little dogs. |

I have 3 kiddos.. and they were 7-4-and 2 when I got Gunther and have been great with him!!!! sometimes you have to tell them be easy but other then that they have a blast!!!!!:D |
I had my Yorkie, Truman for about 2 years before we had kids. After we had children they learned from the start what was okay, and what wasn't. We now have 5 Yorkies and my kids are ages 11, 9, and 7. I do have to say that if a child has never been around a small dog, I would be uncomfortable starting them out with a Yorkie. When my kids bring friends over that have never been around small dogs, I have to watch them like a hawk because they are always trying to pick them up and squeeze them really tightly. Great question! |
My Boy has been around small dogs and pups as my sister in law who lives right next door has poms. Im not worried about him being around him, just checking out others experiences |
my little girl is 4 and she does pretty good she knows that she can't pick up the puppy by herself..and she always ask if its ok to play with her...like everyone else said supervision is the key |
im asking these kind of questions in part of research before bringing a pup into my family, so i know what and when is right timing and everything else that goes with it. |
I have five kids ages 1,3,5,11, and 12 and I had a 8 week old maltese first before my yorkie and they do fine of course I watch them like a HAWK but they are fine and I teach them how not to handle our furbabies. |
I have 3 kids 17, 15, and 5. Curly Mac was given to my 5 yr old, Jack, for Christmas this year. So far, so good. Jack is really gentle and sweet hearted. He says he's Curly's daddy and named his brothers her uncles lol. |
Now that I can answer this! We just got our first yorkie yesterday and I have 4 children! Our little girl, is 4 months old and weighs 2 lbs. My kids are 9, 5, 3 & 2 yrs old and they are gentle with her. They have been loving on her and she has the perfect personality and everything has went smooth over the last 24 hours. Like she was always meant to be. Although I do understand what people say about young children and a small(er) yorkie. She is under your feet before you know it! |
My children are 6, 4 and 3 yrs old and they are INCREDIBLE with Missy and have been since Day 1. They no longer run in the house because Missy could be underfoot. They make sure their toys are always picked up. They always have a watchful eye out for her and keep her safe at all times. They truly adore their puppy and want nothing but the best for her. They are NOT allowed to carry her around, or hold her unless they are sitting down. I am beyond thrilled with how they treat her. They totally understand that she is tiny and more vulnerable then our 20 lb pug dog or my Mom's boxer. Missy can't so much as pick up a piece of fluff off the floor without the kids panicing that she might swallow it. It's really cute. :D My children are extremely well behaved though. I get compliments all the time on their behaviour. My husband on the other hand...he's the one I have to watch out for...he's so clumsy! LOL! ;) |
Mine are 20, 13 and 6. We have a dauchshund already so my little one was familiar with dogs even tho Bentley is quite a bit smaller. I do still watch her very closely and threated her life if she was ever alone in the room with the puppy and he yiped no matter what the supposed reason. So, I guess I scared her into being good... not sure I should have admitted that :) |
I have 2 kids and my son was 1.5 and my daughter was 4.5 when I got toby. Toby is pretty small 3lbs, but it's all in how you show your kids to handle them. My kids have never hurt my yorkie. :) |
We have 3 right now, 4 in July! Emma was 3.5 when we got Sicily, and she was almost 5 when when Shoo was born. We just had this last litter of 2 little boys, and my youngest just turned 1 in December. (So they are 5.5, 4, and 1 right now.) I never had a problem with the kids being too rough with the dogs, but we have all had to learn how to watch where we are stepping. (My husband more than anyone- it seems like his feet are little yorkie magnets!) :) I've found that they are wonderful dogs around our kids. |
Amelia was born when Gypsy was 1 and we got Kayla when Amelia was 5months old. I've never had a problem with all 3 of them being together and the girls often try to engage Amelia in their games and she loves to take their toys and play tug a war with them. Quote:

I was 13 when we got Sapphire, and my brother was 11. We've done fine with her, and she's done fine with us. No problems. :) |
From the day we got Brownie we have had kids from infant to 3 years old Around Brownie. If the kids are taught there are no problems. |
My son was 14 when I broght Suzi home. He has high functioning autism, and developmentally at a much younger age.... he's very gentle with Suzi and loves her . Young children can be taught how to handle a puppy, however the younger the child is the more parental supervision is required for both the safety of the puppy and little person. |
We got our little girl last week. My 5 boys ages are: 16,14,8 (today), 6, and 4. we have to watch them but itis going well. |
