Do any of you have kids and if so what age where they when you got your Yorkie Just a curious question for me as i have a small child my self, |
I have 4 they are 11,9,7 and 5. I got my toy poodle when my 5 year old was 3 and he did just fine. He needed supervision obviously when handling puppy but if taught correctly kids learn quickly how to handle pets. When Tucker joined us in Nov. they were old pro's :). |
Our daughter turned 3 just days after we got our Rocky (he was 8 weeks old) and she has been fine with him but needs CONSTANT supervision, not because of him but because like all 3 year olds she would be touching him all day long if I let her. So we have certain times during the day when she is allowed to play/pet him, the rest of the time she is not allowed near him! |
My Daughter was 5 when we got our yorkies |
My 23 year old dtr was born when I had Zorro so she was taught very early how to handle dogs, then when I got gracie she was 5 and I took her to the breeders home along with my 5 year old niece and she was impressed on how gentle and well behaved the kids were. She put all 4 puupies in the kitchen and the girls sat on the floor and played so nicely with them. I am a firm believer that if you teach your children to be respectful and gentle then they can have a small dog. |
My oldest son was just turned 1 when we got Ciera. Our other son came along one year later. Like posters said before me, you have to teach them how to be respectful and how to handle them early and they should be fine. |
thanks for your replies everyone, I have an almost 2 year old and some ppl were telling me he was a little young for a puppy, but as you said, they just need to be taught how to treat animals, and we do have 2 border collies, but they are outside dogs, but still he is very good with them. it all logic, supervision |
Mia was 3 and Lucia was almost one when we got Twinkle....as others have said, as long as there is constant supervision it can work well. My girls are growing up with a huge amount of love and respect for animals xx xx |
My boys were 10 and 13. :woof: |
My daughter was just a little over 2yrs old when we brought Stormy home, before Stormy we had a shihtzu puppy and with him we taught her that you do not pick up the puppy without mommy and daddy and you touch the puppy gently. My daughter is amazing with Stormy.I think what helped us is that we had a parrot before so she knew that she had to be very gentle with handling him :) |
3 Attachment(s) My 4 kids were 10 months/2yrs/7yrs/10yrs when we brought Mika home at only 8 weeks old! We have always had dogs since before my eldest was born, some big some smaller, but none as small as Mika. Although we breed staffs so they have been around newborn puppies too. Its very important to teach children respect in all areas of life and I believe that pets are great way of doing just that. I never give my children the opportunity to be too rough with the animals and I've never had an incident were either the children or the pets have hurt one another. Congrats on deciding to bring a new family member into your home! |
My son was 12 when we got Mia and he is so good with her, and he has a Sheltie of his own since he was 8. Scrapy, the Sheltie, has slept with him every night since he got him...:) |
My children were 8 and 10 when we got Tatum but I already had a toy poodle when they were born. I think having a small dog at that age was wonderful for them. They were taught how to respect animals by having one in their daily lives. On the other hand, my nephews are sheer terror for Tatum. She likes to run and play but the boys are so loud and try to lunge for her, which she doesn't like. I have to always be on them to be nice to her and then she'll play with them. They have been raised with a big lab though so are not used to being gentle with little dogs. |

I have 3 kiddos.. and they were 7-4-and 2 when I got Gunther and have been great with him!!!! sometimes you have to tell them be easy but other then that they have a blast!!!!!:D |
I had my Yorkie, Truman for about 2 years before we had kids. After we had children they learned from the start what was okay, and what wasn't. We now have 5 Yorkies and my kids are ages 11, 9, and 7. I do have to say that if a child has never been around a small dog, I would be uncomfortable starting them out with a Yorkie. When my kids bring friends over that have never been around small dogs, I have to watch them like a hawk because they are always trying to pick them up and squeeze them really tightly. Great question! |
