Yorkie Hair Maintenance I have a beautiful 9 month old Yorkie that is pampered and spoiled, but need some good advice. My baby goes to the groomer every month for a trim, teeth brushing, ear trim, hair pluck (ears), toenails trimmed, and bath. On average, I give her a bath at home every two week, sometimes sooner. My concern is her fur around her neck and head. I brush her regularly to keep her knots out, but her hair around her head and back of neck looks greasy and uncombed, almost stringy looking. When it gets like this I give her a bath, which is usually after a week of her last bath. I read somewhere that she should only have a bath every two weeks or her fur will dry out. I just want her fur to be silky smooth all the time and not look oily. Her back and legs are soft mostly. Any advice from those who have had Yorkies, bred Yorkies, showed Yorkies, groomed Yorkies? |

I bathe once every 2 weeks also.....But with all the products out there....maybe you should switch...use some different ones....I am sure you will find the results you are looking for..... :) What works for some might not work for others...I use a body oil with sesame for my babies... |
I bath mine once a week. We go out to walk very often so once a week bath is needed otherwise he smells :p. I am going to change mine to Buddy Wash Shampoo and Conditioner and I usually spray some diluted Emu Oil on him. |
Maisie gets this too, it's really annoying! I guess it's the most common place for people to pat a dog so the oil from their hands can make them very greasy looking. I bathe Maisie about once a week. I was told by her breeder that it's ok to wash your Yorkie as often as you want, every day if you have the time/inclination as Yorkies have a different type of coat to other dogs; it's more like human hair so doesn't dry out so easily. Be sure to use dog shampoo though as some chemicals in human shampoo can irritate a dogs skin. I personally do use conditioner, I did try not using it but it made no difference to the oily look on her head, but I do try to be sparing with it on her head. Also, make sure you're rinsing thoroughly, you could be leaving residue in her coat by not rinsing for long enough. It always takes longer than you'd think to rinse. My general rule is when you think you've rinsed for long enough continue for a further 60 seconds. I do this also with my own hair! ;) Hope this helps a little! ;) Jess :heart to |
:welcome4: to YT!!! We are glad you are here! I wash mine about once a week...or more if they need it...their hair and skin do not get dried out...and I even use wood heat in the winter. Find a good shampoo....it may be trial and error finding what works best for you and your pup. I like BuddyWash, PetSilk and SheaPet.... Check out the grooming section HERE for more tips and ideas! |
My husband was commenting on Baxter's hair and neck looking "greasy" last night. The rest of him looks fine. I don't know what to do either. |
I also wash my girls every week - they attend doggie daycare every day during the work week and go for long walks on the weekend. Needless to say, they start to look a little rough by the time "bath day" rolls around. If they don't need their weekly bath, I'm convinced they didn't have enough fun that week. ;) I'm still trying out different shampoos myself, so I can't really help you there. Good luck and welcome to YT! :) |
ok I ordered Minksheen since soooo many people love this shampoo on here. My Tyke has a cotton coat, so he hardly ever looks brushed..lol I'm patiently waiting......... He needs a bath now, but i'm waiting on it to come in the mail...;) |

Lola's head used to get greasy after a week. I got my Biogroom sample I LOVE it! Her head isn't greasy and she has beautiful shine. Her hair is much shinier after switching her to a prey model diet. I'm waiting for my minksheen sample to come. For now I'll stick with the Biogroom. |

i think they are like people you have to find what works for their particular kind of hair. especially since yorkie hair is similar to our hair;) |
