Caging when you're home?
 

I literally run when I get off work to come home and let my baby out of her x-pen and play with her.

I do however understand that there might be time that I might have to put her in her pen while I'm at home.

Is there any way to train the puppy not to cry when I'm home and she's in there?

Seems like as soon as she hears me come in the house, she cries. I take my time getting to her so she gets the idea of being in the pen while I'm at home but she criesyelpswhinesbarkscriesyelpswhinesbarks over and over until I open the gate for her and let her out.

well, if you have to, you may have to move her x-pen into another room, or even on a different floor of the house, that way she will get used to being in there when you are home. I crate train Fiona, and she does fine with it.

You could try giving her a special toy pr treat and putting her in the crate for short periods of time. But I would probably not do it when you first get home as they are so happy to see us.

Maybe her kong toy can go in there with her with a new treat.

If I just feed her the treat she gobbles it up and goes back to crying.

This would be for like when I have a lot of people at the house for a party or am working from home.

She runs around when we're home but I want her to get used to the idea of having to be in the pen while we're home so that when I need to put her in there she wont go nuts barking the first time.

She is in her own room (Well its my office and she has half of it. her pen, shelf with stuff and extra pee pad are on one side.

Kongs are the best! You can keep her occupied by putting yogurt or a treat in it and put it in the freezer, you can even put peanut butter in it!

:thumbup::thumbup: Special treats work wonders!!!! I also agree not to expect her not to cry if you are putting in the pen right after you get home. She's missed you and is now excited to see you. Putting in her pen is "torture" since she is soooo excited to see you and love on you.:D

Well this is fairly easy.

My yorkie is my first dog ever but I've been reading up as much as I can to find out what it is I'm supposed to do to make his life great. On the other hand there are some things you can do to make your life just as good. One of those things is insisting on quiet while your puppy is in the crate or pen.

The way I did it was simply ignore him when he whines while he's in his crate. I know this sounds so heartless, but really it's not. As long as your puppy is well fed, watered, pooped and peed there is really no reason he should whine in the crate. They have everything they need, after all.

Your mission is to have your little girl stay in her crate, quietly while you go about your business around the house. Her mission? Get your attention.

She knows that if she whines you will let her out. So if you want her to be quiet in the crate the last thing you should do is let her out while she's whining. Wait until she is quiet. This may take a while. Stick to it, it'll pay off. Once she is quiet (even for a minute or two) go over to her and praise her. Give her a treat. Tell her what a good girl she is. Etc.

After a while she'll learn being quiet is what gets your attention, not being loud.

Also... when you do need to let her out, make sure she is quiet even then. Her silence is rewarded by being let out and your attention.

After a while she'll learn that being quiet is what makes you happy. Right now she thinks that whining is what it takes to get your attention.

So just ignore her. Don't yell at her (negative attention is better than nothing). Just ignore her. I know your heart'll break a little but once you see the results you'll also see it was worth it.

Suri stays in her x-pen when I'm not home. When I get home I ignore her until she is quite then she comes out and I play with her. I think I saw that on animal planet, it also helps tons with seperation anxiety. :)

I did this to Bailey too, it used to drive me mad when he cried in his crate (i have a HUGE crate) He stays in it during the day when i am a work but if my nan comes over bailey has to go in his crate as she is 72 and does not like dogs :( He used to cry all the time and i just ignored him, he is in a diff room in his crate which i think was a big help to train him. Now i can put him in there and he knows not to cry :) if he didnt cry when he gets let out he is gets a treat and i play with him. It really worked for me :)

Don't run to her the second you get in the house. Wait until she's quiet to let her out of her crate. When your home, work with her and put her in the crate for short periods of time. When she gets quiet, then let her out. Also give her something like a peanut butter filled kong to occupy her mind.

Kong makes many different kinds, but here are a couple of the basics. It's basically something that you can put a paste, or treat in to occupy them

I have a couple of the ones in the first link and the third link. Some people buy the Kong paste to go with it, but it's probably better just to put yogurt or peanut butter in it instead.
