Humping My 4.5 month old is humping already - is that normal? I thought they begin that stage at around 7 months ... he only humps my husbands leg. It's so funny!! |
Joey humped his toys when he was only 12 weeks old, I thought it was hilarious too, and he had his favorites toys. However, they say you should never allow them to hump a human, this is a sign of dominance, and your yorkie is telling your husband he is dominant. This can cause problems down the road because dogs should understand that all humans are dominant over them. Neutering stopped Joey's humping, but this is not always true. So it might be best if your husband told him No, and gave him a stuffed animal to play with. |
i really wouldn't worry about it. He's just being dominate. trying to let your husband know who's in charge of things!!! it's kind of a competition thing. they're both competing for your attention!!:) |
Really? It's a dominance thing? I had no idea!! I will have to tell him no from now on. He started humping my husband a couple weeks ago and last night he tried to hump my leg too! |

This is one of Cesar's methods for establishing dominance, we have lightened up with this as Joey has gotten older, but I do think it helps let them know you are the boss, and really important when they are young. Another easy method for establishing dominance is always making them sit before you place the food bowl down. You teach them to sit, and then have them stay until you place the food down and you give the "release" command. You keep picking the bowl up until they stay until the release command is given. They actually learn this really fast. The lesson you are trying to teach is that all food is given by the pack leaders, and they have to obey the pack leader to get food. Lol thats funny. my dogs hump each other, the pillow and toys but never have they humped people. |
Humping is bad behavior. It is a dominance, just like barking at you or peeing on you. It is not cute, funny, natural or harmless. You would not allow a Great dane to hump the arm or your sofa. Correct the dog just like you would correct any other bad behavior, snd if they do it just to certain toys, remove those toys. |
Thank you thank you! This is all so helpful! I do make my Charlie sit before I put the food bowl down. He's still learnign to stay so I have yet to make him sit too long before I put it down. I also try to make him sit before I take him out of the playpen when I go home from work. But it never works because he gets WAY TOO excited and couldn't stop jumping. So I just press his butt down and he sits for a quarter of a second ... |

I meant to add in regards to the humping, Maximus does it to his "stuffed" yorkie, but never has on us. I've never worried about it because I've heard it was a dominance thing. |
