Anther thing to try is to sit down on the floor, and use treats. Since Yorkie's are so tiny , great big hands coming towards them has to be really scary!
My Suzi will play games with me sometimes too. But, if i ignore her, and sit down she will jump all over me. I think it is that she wants to be the one to decide .
I really need to work with her when it comes to being outside, to come when being called. :aimeeyork

Chloe does it too. I really don't understand how her mind must work. She will jump and jump at me wanting to get up on my lap, I reach down to get her and she runs under the coffee table :rolleyes: we repeat this about 5 times until she finally stands there and lets me get her.

Lately I have been saying Chloe Come when she is already coming towards me , then acting like she did something great. I know she knows what I mean.......she just doesn't want to do it.

My other dog Sydney will come whenever I call her , everytime. IF we are in the house. If we are outside and she gets out of our gate ( which she has done a couple times) she will not listen to me no matter how much I call her :rolleyes: In the house she's great...outside, not so much. :p

She sounds very Stubborn like my Baron. I started to give him treats and now the little bugger finally comes to me after 6 months. He even climbs up on my lap and wants to snuggle and have his belly rubbed too!!!
I don't have to call his name, he does it on his own... Keep trying, Terriers are stubborn!! Good-Luck....:D

yep, thats pretty typical of a yorkie. Dolly is the same way, and she is almost three years old. she knows her name well and will sometimes only stand there and look at me when called. but since she gets very jealous, whenever I want her to come I will just give her sis a kiss, and she would come running to me LOL. and whenever we go outside she never stay more than two feet away from me as she gets very scared when she gets a little further away which THANK GOD helps so much!

I saw on "It's Me Or the Dog" they used "clicker" training for this. She used a whistle and treats. To start out, she'd blow the whistle and then give the dog a treat. She must have done this 8-10 times so the dog associated the whistle with a treat. She let the dog go in an open field and it worked like a charm. Whenever the dog heard the whistle, he would return to her(because he knew he would be rewarded).

We are going through the same thing with JoJo at 7 months. Maybe Yorkies have selective hearing like husbands and children! I really think they know they are so cute and want us to really work to get the honor to hold them! Of course at sleepy time, they want someone to hold them close. They are bad to the bone.

I think if you teach her to "sit" and "wait" first, the "come" is much easier. Once she masters the "sit", make her "wait"...actually walk away from her while she "sits" and "waits"...a little further each time. You should be able to walk out of her sight and she should stay. Then give the "come" command with enthusiasm and treats. After she is able to do this...before you pick her up, teach her to "come close". It's the cutest thing, if I'm sitting and Winston wants in my lap, I tell him to "sit" first...he sits, then I say "come close"....and he stands up, takes a few steps towards me and sits back down and waits to be picked up. Sometimes, he's still not quite close enough for me to reach down and get him, so I repeat "come close" and he takes a couple more steps towards me. Hilarious!!!
But I do believe they need to "sit" and "wait" before they understand the "come"
Repetition is the key...do it every time...over and over again she'll get it right.

Never, ever chase her...she will only run away...thinking it's a game. This could be tragic.

My molly is just like that to. So up setting . But i`m the one that gives bathes ,nail trimming ,ear jobs ,saying no , taking to the vet, all other jobs that half to be done so i think no wonder she not so sure of me. But yet she is right behind me where ever i go an in my lap the minute i sit down. So she is just unsure what job has to be done next by me. The only thing she really comes to is her vitamins she loves them. I do have right now when i say down molly she stops an lays down . Well it don`t work all of the time. But it is scarry when she is outdoors cause she won`t stop sometime no matter what. Hope some one had a magic answer
