I don't understand... My 8-month old girl knows her name. I know it because she stares at me when I call her. But she wouldn't come to me when I call her. She just stands there and look at me. When I come near her pen to pick her up I call her name but she won't go near me. And when I walk away from the pen she runs and jumps on the pen towards my direction. When I go near again she walks back away from me again and so on... Can anyone please help me understand her behavior? |

My Jack can be very stubborn . Thats just the way Yorkies are from what I've heard. Our lab/cow dog mix chases cows and Jack picked that up from her. We keep her on a zip line now, but Jack still chases the cows. I am so scared he's going to get hurt. When he did it last night I kept yelling his name for him to come back but he wouldn't come. He knows his name too, he's just very stubborn at times. He's still my baby though. Just normal behaviour I guess. :animal36 |
Typical yorkie behavior for sure!!!! Both my girls do this to this day, and they are 7 & 9 years old. It's their way or no way. lol |
I trained KiKi to come to me using treats....now when I say "KiKi come" she will come to me (and sometimes I still give her a treat or lots of praise and affection).....it took a bit of training...each and every time I said "KiKi come"....I would give her a treat when she came and said good girl...good come...I started by doing this in the house..I would hide and call her...then I did the same outside. Good Luck! |
I've also found that when I go and sit down in a chair or on the couch she'll jump right up into my lap. She just gets funny at times about anyone swooping down to scoop her up. She'll even be standing on my leg digging at it like she wants me to pick her up and when I reach down (not always) she'll jump back. I can't figure her out sometimes lol!! |
Treats might help, but if they don't work I'd try training classes. It's really important that they come when called. |
That is a typical yorkie behavior. :D I found that treats work wonders to teach them to come to you. It is very important to teach your baby to stay and come. Here is a link to teach your dog tricks:Dog Training and Obedience Lessons At the bottom of the page there are links with commands. There is a come and stay command there. ;) |
I have the same problem with Asha. She loves to do it too! I agree, treats seem to work. Typical yorkie behavior!:D |
That's a yorkie for you. They are very independent and and they listen when they want to. they do get better after the age of 2. So just consider them to be stuborn children. |

Koda does the same thing when he gets out and i call for him.. he just stands there and looks at me.. when i walk toward him, sometimes he will run, and sometimes he just sits there and waits for me to come to him and pick him up |
How do you hide from a Yorkie? Quote:
Hiding from your Yorkie has to be difficult in itself LOL :) K-Angel -- I have the problem with Bentley too. He just sits and stares at me as if I am a complete fool. My neighbor (who went to training with her dog) told me to look at Bentley while running backwards and to call him, then give them a treat when you stop because WALA! he is right there with you. Apparently her trainer told her that no dog can resist a good chase :doghop: LOL. Several times a day I will just start running backwards and calling his name. Not sure if this will be helpful to you but I have been doing it with Bentley a bit and it seems to be helping (at least until we can get into a good training class ourselves). WARNING: take a good look where your going before you start backing up! Yeah... that is another discussion topic! HA HA HA:lol tears Peggy (a.k.a. Bentleys momma) :yorkietal |
Mine also does this. I tought him to "give me butt". He will then kinda lay down, do a "curl" and put his butt in the air. I give his butt a good scratch and pick him up! |

Anther thing to try is to sit down on the floor, and use treats. Since Yorkie's are so tiny , great big hands coming towards them has to be really scary! My Suzi will play games with me sometimes too. But, if i ignore her, and sit down she will jump all over me. I think it is that she wants to be the one to decide . I really need to work with her when it comes to being outside, to come when being called. :aimeeyork |
Chloe does it too. I really don't understand how her mind must work. She will jump and jump at me wanting to get up on my lap, I reach down to get her and she runs under the coffee table  we repeat this about 5 times until she finally stands there and lets me get her. Lately I have been saying Chloe Come when she is already coming towards me , then acting like she did something great. I know she knows what I mean.......she just doesn't want to do it. My other dog Sydney will come whenever I call her , everytime. IF we are in the house. If we are outside and she gets out of our gate ( which she has done a couple times) she will not listen to me no matter how much I call her  In the house she's great...outside, not so much. :p |
She sounds very Stubborn like my Baron. I started to give him treats and now the little bugger finally comes to me after 6 months. He even climbs up on my lap and wants to snuggle and have his belly rubbed too!!! I don't have to call his name, he does it on his own... Keep trying, Terriers are stubborn!! Good-Luck....:D |
yep, thats pretty typical of a yorkie. Dolly is the same way, and she is almost three years old. she knows her name well and will sometimes only stand there and look at me when called. but since she gets very jealous, whenever I want her to come I will just give her sis a kiss, and she would come running to me LOL. and whenever we go outside she never stay more than two feet away from me as she gets very scared when she gets a little further away which THANK GOD helps so much! |
I saw on "It's Me Or the Dog" they used "clicker" training for this. She used a whistle and treats. To start out, she'd blow the whistle and then give the dog a treat. She must have done this 8-10 times so the dog associated the whistle with a treat. She let the dog go in an open field and it worked like a charm. Whenever the dog heard the whistle, he would return to her(because he knew he would be rewarded). |
Thanks so much for all the responses :) It's a relief I'm not alone and there's definitely hope :D You guys are all very helpful. I will do everything to train her to come to me ;) |
We are going through the same thing with JoJo at 7 months. Maybe Yorkies have selective hearing like husbands and children! I really think they know they are so cute and want us to really work to get the honor to hold them! Of course at sleepy time, they want someone to hold them close. They are bad to the bone. |

I think if you teach her to "sit" and "wait" first, the "come" is much easier. Once she masters the "sit", make her "wait"...actually walk away from her while she "sits" and "waits"...a little further each time. You should be able to walk out of her sight and she should stay. Then give the "come" command with enthusiasm and treats. After she is able to do this...before you pick her up, teach her to "come close". It's the cutest thing, if I'm sitting and Winston wants in my lap, I tell him to "sit" first...he sits, then I say "come close"....and he stands up, takes a few steps towards me and sits back down and waits to be picked up. Sometimes, he's still not quite close enough for me to reach down and get him, so I repeat "come close" and he takes a couple more steps towards me. Hilarious!!! But I do believe they need to "sit" and "wait" before they understand the "come" Repetition is the key...do it every time...over and over again she'll get it right. Good luck, hope this helps. It just may save her life if she were to ever get loose some where, some how. All you would have to do is tell her to "sit, wait and come close". Never, ever chase her...she will only run away...thinking it's a game. This could be tragic. |
My molly is just like that to. So up setting . But i`m the one that gives bathes ,nail trimming ,ear jobs ,saying no , taking to the vet, all other jobs that half to be done so i think no wonder she not so sure of me. But yet she is right behind me where ever i go an in my lap the minute i sit down. So she is just unsure what job has to be done next by me. The only thing she really comes to is her vitamins she loves them. I do have right now when i say down molly she stops an lays down . Well it don`t work all of the time. But it is scarry when she is outdoors cause she won`t stop sometime no matter what. Hope some one had a magic answer |
