Rare colored yorkies?
 

I found a breeders website today and she bred rare colored yorkies. I remember there was golden and tri- colored yorkies on there and they where akc. I didn't know there could be other colors ?

By the looks of it, it all looked like mix-breeds for a bit the way she put the colors it seemed like it was a breed over a color. Does that make sense?

I was wondering does anyone have a rare colored yorkie?
Or seen one?

I have never seen a yorkie in person other then the blue and tan or a black and tan. Would love to see a website. :)

There are a few people on YT that have "rare" colored yorkies. There are also ALOT of threads on YT about "rare" colored yorkies as well. These dogs are not bred to the YTCA standard of the breed, or any Yorkie standard in other countries. These threads get pretty heated. Alot of passionate people reguarding this issue. But dont let the term "rare" fool you. Its just a marketing ploy so these "breeders" can jack the price up on these puppies. Same with the term T-cup, micro-mini, etc.

As yorkiekist stated, there are several members here on YT who either breed or own non-standard colored Yorkies. Not sure what site you are looking at and I'm certainly not an expert on the off colored little ones, but chances are that maybe what you saw WERE actually mixed breeds. I'm sure there are quite a few scammers out there trying to pass off mixes as full bred Yorkies so that they can capitalize on "rare" Yorkies. Some of the off colored dogs pull in quite a high amount for the breeders who produce them.

There are probably more members here who own or breed non standard colored yorkies than we are led to believe, since only a small percentage of dogs are correctly colored, per the YTCA's color standards.

Black coated yorkies, light blue or too dark of blue coated yorkies, yorkies who have dark hairs mixed in their tan coloring - they are all considered to be "not to standard." It's not just parti, chocolate or golden breeders who own and/or breed that have "non-standard" colors, it's any color other than steel blue and tan yorkies.

Just as you have traditional colored yorkie breeders who scam the public, you will also find golden, parti and chocolate breeders who are out to make a quick buck and to try to capitalize on the "rare" colored dog. To them, it doesn't matter how they get the color - a scammer is a scammer no matter how you look at it; no matter what colored yorkie they are trying to sell.

Best advise I can give you is, educate yourself on color genetics, get references on breeders, do your research on bloodlines (to see where the recessive color gene is coming from), look at the parents and grown siblings of the off colored pup before you buy (a line of unattractive dogs will probably not stop at the pup your looking at buying) and don't rush into buying something until you are sure that you are not blinded by color.

You are right about that...there are many Yorkies that are not being bred to standard, not just the parti/golden/chocolate ones. However, that wasn't what the OP started this thread about...she asked about, so it's pretty irrelevant. I don't think that you can exactly lump them all into one category and consider them "the same" as you have done here. You have to take many factors into consideration and consider the end result.

I think if people are calling parti, chocolate and golden "non standards" or "off standard", then yes, you are then putting them in a larger, general category of all yorkies who don't meet the standards, so I do consider them "the same." Off standard is off standard, no matter what off color they are; no matter what other issue causes them to be considered off standard. Or are you saying that some off colors are considered to be more "off standard" than other off colors are, thus they should not be put into the "same" category together? :confused:

As for the OP's question, colors we see are golden, parti (some being almost solid white), chocolate, golden parti, chocolate parti and black and tan/gold in addition to various shades of blue and tan/gold.

Yes, that is exactly what I was saying. The dogs you mentioned...wrong shading, the steel blue being to light, or other issues that cause them to be off standard can often be produced from a pairing of dam and sire that were representations of the breed standard. With the intent being to produce dogs that meet the standard and the possibility was there. (Or for that matter, dogs with minor flaws against the standard can often be bred to produce offspring that meet it.)
To me, there is difference between that scenario and breeding dogs that you KNOW won't meet the standard...that it is your goal from the very beginning. Thus why I said I didn't think they could be put into the same category. But I guess that is something we will just have to agree to disagree on.

I'm reading back over my first post--it was general information addressing partis/goldens specifically, as that was the OPs question. It wasn't derogatory, didn't condone or condemn the practice, nor did it even give any hint of what my opinion on the subject was one way or the other. So I'm not sure where the need to justify it by bringing in anything relating to standard colored Yorkies came from. :confused: I think we are all aware of that many Yorkies being bred today are not standard, be it because of size, bite, coloring, whatever....I just didn't see where it was relevant at all to the OP's question, my response or anything that had been mentioned for that matter.

The whites and parti's dont even look like yorkies!

I have tried to keep quiet on this subject...but this is just not a fair statement. Yes...some off colored yorkies do look like mixes. But so do many supposedly purebred AKC traditional colored yorkies.

I happen to think there are some very nice parti yorkie's on this site.

Take a look at Sue's Remi, or Tammy's Livi, or Deb's Nickolas, or my Chaos.
Loretta and Jeanne have nice parti's as well.

He is AKC & DNA registered and all yorkie, no matter what his color is!
