Just how big can a Yorkie get? Just how big can a yorkie get? I was told by the breeder that my puppy's daddy was 6.5 lbs and her mommy was 9 lbs. The breeder told me my puppy would be around 6-8 lbs. She just turned 6 months old today and she weighs 7lbs. Anyone out there that can tell me if they had a puppy like this? I love her and wouldn't trade her for anything but I am thinking she will weigh 12 lbs by the time she is full grown. :( What do you think? |
I could be way off but I wouldn't say she would get much bigger, not more than a pound or maybe two. Paula:p Halle:aimeeyork Brutis:aimeeyork |
My Mya is almost 8 months and still growing! The last time I weighed her was a few weeks ago and she was 8.8lbs, so I am almost positive she is over 9 now! I LOVE that she is huge, i make fun of her all the time :) She satisfies my love for having a substantial sized dog (I am a big dog lover at heart) but still retains the convenience of having a little dog! Please no sad face, it's great that she's so big! Think about how less you have to worry about her getting hurt by jumping off a couch or something or playing with other doggies :) There are positives about it, I would love Mya no matter how big or teeny she was :) |
I'm guessing that her growth will slow way down now that she has hit 6 months and probably be 9 pounds. I have a bigger one and she is such a nice armful. she is the only one that I can actually hug and I love her to pieces. |
Lola was only 4 lb at 7 months and then had a growth spurt. She grew until a year old and ended up at 9 lbs. I can still carry her around. My family is happy she is not too scrawny. morrislaz |
my dog's closer to 10 lbs but not quite 10 lbs. 9.5 or something.... ive seen yorkies that are 10+lbs but they're still all adorable~ mickey's step sister casey was 10 lbs when she was 6 months she was a fatty but adorable i dont know how much she weighs now |
I have read that growth does slow considerably after 6 months. It's really hard to say for sure just how big a pup will get, but you can look at the parents size and go plus or minus a couple of pounds. ~Kathy:animal-pa |
Thank you all for replying. My poodle that I lost 2 years ago weighed 9 lbs and I wanted Kinsey to be around there in weight. She does so remind me of my poodle with her actions. I love her so! Thanks again. |
My Keegan is 12# of burning LOVE!!! Boo (aka Clarence) is 6.5# of "who the hell do you think you are talking to???" |
I think you have to look at previous litters of the dam/sire to help estimate when the potential growth spurt will occur. I've seen some puppies have a growth spurt very young, then slow down or stop at around 6mths. Some may start out very small and have a growth spurt after the 6mth mark. |
Puppy weights aren't soley determined by the parents...gentically that can go back 3 generations. Unless the breeder knows the animals in her lines...any thing about weight is a "guess". Between 6 - 8 months...they usually fill out some. I agree she'll probably weigh 9 pounds. |
jackson is only a little over 12 weeks and weighs a little over 6 pounds! lol. i'm happy actually, i didn't want a dog very fragile and two pounds, just my personal preference. i'm hoping he grows to be 10 pounds or more. his parents were said to have been 8 pounds (father) and 7 pounds (mother) |
My oldest one is close to 15 lbs, and the baby(biewer) is staying at 2 pounds for the last month and she's almost 7 mos |
Hi! 1 Attachment(s) Chloe is 10 weeks and already weights about 3 pounds. I love her dearly. They said she will be about 7 pounds as an adult. I read that by the time there 12 weeks u multiply the weight times 2 and that's how much they will weight. I'm not worried about it, I think regarless if she's 7 pounds or 12 the love I have for her won't ever change. :aimeeyork Some people tend to want smaller dogs, but I feel like too many accidents can happend, besides 7 or 20 pounds are nothing, a Yorkie is a Yorkie.. Chloe's momma:p |
Our Annabella is 7 1/2 mos and is about 7 lbs. We just got Luca who is 14 weeks and he weighs 4 lbs. His mom is 4 lbs and his dad is 3.5. The only way Luca will weigh 4 lbs full grown is if we plug him up..... LOL. I love the 6-8 lb or so, or bigger,. They are not as easy to step on and we are older folks. |
Have just discovered this site after years of being Yorkie lovers! What great fun! We have 3 babies and senior citizen beagle. My male 5 year old weighs about 15 pounds! We call him our Mutant...LOL! Our two girls are about 2.5 - 3 pounds. Deuce's mother was 12 pounds so we weren't surprised that he grew so big. He has the best personality though...he has no idea he's not "normal" LOL  :aimeeyorkDeuce:aimeeyorkLucy:aimeeyorkKatie:anima l36Chica Always in my:love: Mickie:aimeeyork and Daisy:aimeeyork |
Adult weight is a wild guess unless the breeder is very experienced (rare these days) with and knowledgeable of the lineage, the parents(very few), grand parents(almost none), and siblings(are you freakin kidding me?) of both of the dogs being bred. And is the kind of person that will tell you the truth without regard to what they think you want to hear. There is no formula that will offer anything more than entertainment while you wait to see how your puppy will turn out. Once you have a good working knowledge of the particular lines you are working with you can use past history to develop a formula that will give much better accuracy. That is where the various formula's come from, but they are completely useless when applied as a general rule. They will occasionally work, but even a stopped clock is right twice per day. |
great to hear! I LOVE hearing about all those yorkies with something substantial to them! when we first adopted our Gracie I was horrified when the vet said she was 12 pounds and could stand to gain at least a pound. Now I know how good it is to have a bigger yorkie... she is so much less fragile! |
The last time Suzi was weighed she was 7.5 lbs. However, i know she has gained more since then... She is 9 months old, and i think she is around 9 lbs now ! She has been indorrs most of the winter tiime, and that is why I believe she has gained more ! ;) |
Molly is 14lbs and pure yorkie..i still think she looks very small when she is running round the fields with her bigger doggy friends. She is real tomboy, so i wouldnt want her to be any smaller, it would worry me too much. She has the cutest wiggly bum and full tail, and it always makes me smile when she is walking away from me with a toy in her mouth, feeling pleased with herself, as its extra wiggly then! |
My boys had the weirdest growth spurts. They were 2lbs when I got them at 9weeks old (born Sept 1, 2005). I don't remember their weights, but their rabies vacs 2nd round they were 6.2lbs and 4.4lbs, that was in Dec 2006. So they were 1 year 3 months old. Another vet visit in June 2007 and they were 5.5lbs and 9lbs. They have stayed that way. But they had their final and biggest growth spurt well after their first year. |
Thank you everyone for all your information. She is my baby and I am keeping her no matter what. Thanks again! |
It is so good to know that my precious amazonian Yorki is just that. She weighs 13lbs and her ears don't stand up, but she has the beautiful silky hair and the personality of a queen. |

often times a breeder can make estimations, but that doesn't mean they're always going to be accurate. i was a little apprehensive about mine (i think he'll be 10-12 full grown) but now i love the idea of having a lil "teapot!" :p |
When I posted this post, it was May 2009. Now that it is Jan 2010, My Kinsey is really a Teapot! She is now 18 months old and weighs 10.6 lbs. And somedays I think she weighs 11 lbs lol. She is my Teapot and I love her what ever she weighs. She is the most sweetest little girl in the world! Thanks for your replies, Char |
Dayzee was 12# and she was a well-dressed teapot yorkie. |
Wow, just saw I posted in this thread a while back when Jackson was still only 6lbs. He's now 12lbs! :) |
Is he yorkie? I am in a similar position. I've just recieved what I was told is around a 2 year old male Yorkie. But he's close to 17 pounds. Any suggestions??? |
