i am thinking about adopting a cat or kitten. but i am not sure if it's a good idea since milu is 9 months old and 3 lbs. not sure if it's safe?

i also have 3 bunnies at home (baby, dusty, & abbey)
baby and dusty are a bonded pair and they tolerate the dog. and abbey and milu love each other.

can i get some suggestions please? thank you :D

i think if they grow up together theyd be fine, wheras bailee and my cat felix do not like each other one bit lol

There should'nt be a problem at all. You can even go to a shelter & find a cat that's already been declawed if your really worried.

Please Adopt There are WAY to many Cat's & kitten's in shelters.

yes, i will be adopting from a rescue. but i think most shelters will not declaw cats because most believe it's evil.

do you know of cat breeds that are not aggressive?

BubblPopElectrc 01-02-2009 03:14 PM

I have three dogs and a cat and they all get along really well. I think it helps if you get a kitten that is outgoing.

Everyone gets along great and they often play together.

aww...that is so cute.

i am just a little worried because my fiance said that when he was little, his neighbor's cat's claw got stuck in the dog's eye...and pulled it out... (sorry:()

i know this must be an extremely rare case. but i am really worried about the possibility of that.

chachi 01-02-2009 03:22 PM

I would get a kitten that grows up with them rather than a grown cat

Brookef18 01-02-2009 04:10 PM

I would not ever get another cat while I have a yorkie. Chewy and Sadie drive my older cat Oliver crazy... they love to chase him. they don't fight but the chase and bark and Oliver spends a lot of his time on chairs and places where the dogs can't reach.
It's crazy because he is so much bigger but he runs away and they love it because then the chase is on. We spend a lot of time trying to get the dogs to leave my poor cat alone. :(

I gave one of Lolas puppies to Toni my next door neighbor and they have 3 cats a Yorkie and a Sheppard. Pepper the puppy 19 weeks loves to sleep with the cats. They do fine. I would get a kitten. My daughter has a Hairless Cat named ZaZa. That cat plays with all 3 of my Yorkies very well. It was a kitten when she got it....

MollysMum54 01-02-2009 04:25 PM

My cat is 13 and would be quite happy to be friends with Molly.
Molly will be good most of the time, but then will suddenly decide to chase Mitzi. Mitzi has learnt to walk past Molly very slowly with her tail in the air and an aloof look about her...that works much better than running which just makes molly run after her!

We have a cat, a kitten, and 2 yorkies and they all for the most part get along really well.

SophieKatesMom 01-02-2009 04:35 PM

I have a ten year old male cat and we added a 3 month old Yorkie to the mix in September. They get along very well now, at the beginning Sophie (the Yorkie) used to annoy Avery (the cat), it took some boundary setting by the cat but now they seem to be okay.

Avery has his claws and I think he may have batted Miss Sophie a few times but never any claws out bats (no cuts on the puppy). Now Avery will let Sophie lick his head and clean his ears(which makes me kind of weazie).

We were gone over Christmas for 5 days and when we got home Avery and Sophie had a little reunion, it was cute. When I want Sophie to come inside from a walk I will say "let's go see our kitty" that gets her in the house.

As the poster stated I would get a kitten so they can grow up together. I just got lucky because Avery is so laid back.

I love my critter kids.

Most shelter cats are mixed breeds. I don't think I've ever seen a purebred cat at a shelter. Most are just called domestic shorthair.

I just wanted to add That we just got an Adult cat Who has not been Near small animals or dogs & she is better with my boys then my cat now.
& she has been very good with the Guinea pig's.
A kitten is a great idea but if your dog is Laid back a adult cat is Great.

I have 2 cats. One is a big orange Garfield cat and him and Roxie play together all of the time. They play hide and seek and tag. The other one just keeps her distance. If the cat doesn't want to be bothered by the dog they usually just go where they can't be reached. I think it works out great here. Most of the time Roxie knows when they aren't in the mood and stays away. She's quite the tattle tale when they get up on a place they aren't allowed to be. She starts barking at them and running to me barking telling on them. All we have to say is kitty get down and she's off and running after them scolding them. It's pretty funny.

yorkiepuppie 01-03-2009 05:35 PM

i put in an application for a kitty the other day. but i got an email back from them saying that i would need to adopt 2 kittens at the same time. (they have a policy that if it's a kitten, then 2 needs to be adopted at the same time)

i think 2 is too many for me right now  i don't even know how one will do with my other fur kids...

any suggestions?

PennysMum 01-03-2009 05:48 PM

Ask around at other shelters. I'm sure some out there would be willing to part with a kitten without a partner--- or wait until spring when most shelters have a complete kitten overload. They may just be more picky at this time of year since there are typically fewer kittens in midwinter.

Cha Cha 01-03-2009 06:16 PM

Cats will put up with a lot from dogs. I have seen some cats let the dogs get very rough with them, and when the cat has had enough they will let the dog know, and usually cats can get away from a dog rather easily in a house with plenty of hiddin places. That said, some cats/kittens are pretty darn rambunctious, but I would think a yorkie would also be able to let the cat know when it has had enough as well, and most will become pretty good friends. Two concerns I worry about when mixing the two species are that cats can easily scratch the eyes of your little dog with their claws if playing too rough. Just something to think about. AND dogs will eat the feline feces from the litter box so you will have to find a good hiding place for that so the dogs can't get into it. Good luck.

I have 3 cats that range in age from 8 to 2 years old and they tolerate my yorkie pup very well, however they have been around dogs since Ive had them. My 2 and 3 year old cat play alot with Tucker the older one tolerates him and when she's had a enough she thumps him on the head and he gets the hint and leavs her alone.
I think that they will get along just fine. :)

[quote=yorkiepuppie;2398953]do they fight?

they dont fight but bailee is absolutely terrified of him,i trid to introduce them nicely but, felix (who is declawed by the way) smacked her in the head, which didnt hurt her but i think it gave her a complex... i think the cat should be declawed, that is a must!

heatherm0890 01-03-2009 06:52 PM

and also i dont think that you should look for a certain breed, i think any kitten from a shelter would be fine if they grow up together

Some places require you to get 2 kittens because I guess they do better together. I would search for rescues/shelters in your area and look at their rules for adopting kittens before you fall in love with them.

we have a cat that stays in my daughters bedroom she's 3 years old. she doesn't like tyke so we keep her in there for the most part. actually she doesn't come out because he's in the house.
but my neighbors cat is 5 monthes old and she lays by our porch all the time and every time we go out she loves Tyke. she lets him lick her all over the face and they play chase.

i think it's going to be the cat's personality that decides.
if our cat inside was declawed i wouldn't worry about her being around Tyke, but she isn't so they are always supervised if he gets in there.

hope this helps some.

Pepper the cat was 2 when I brought Lily home and they became bestfriends

yorkieaddict 01-03-2009 08:31 PM

Gross Warning! My daughter always had a cat while growing up. Some of her cats got along better than others with the dogs we had. The biggest problem was that all the dogs we had would get into the cat litter box looking for "treats". Now she is grown and it is just us and the Yorkies. Good Luck in your research.

msjagg 01-03-2009 08:45 PM

I have 5 rescued adult cat and 2 dogs. The cats all take another animal in stride. My Yorkie thinks he's a cat. He takes and plays with their cat nip all the time. I also have 10-15 outside Feral cats that I feed from the neighborhood. They come right up to the door when anyone or anything comes out the door. These are wild cats. I've sat with them while they eat and some of them will let me pet them. They come up to both dogs. Sammy and Baron are used to them and just smell @ them. I try to trap the kittens and tame them down. If they need a vet visit they go. I then find them inside homes and tell the people to please spay and Neuter them. Our local shelter puts the kittens to sleep, They're overwhelmed with kittens Spring to Fall. I would get a young kitten/cat if your dog hasn't been around them Our shelter also testa cats with dogs to see how they react. Please ask if your shelter does this... Blessings to you. When you get your new baby, Please post pictures and let us know how they're getting on!!

DO NOT DECLAW YOUR CAT!!!!
Our cat, Duncan, wears Soft Paws. They are soft plastic caps that you glue onto their nails. He is used to them & knows that everytime he gets one replaced orit's time to have the whole set replaced...tuna is in his future. They work really well & we don't have to worry about him using the furniture as a scratching pole.

i think i know where they are coming from. they want to make sure the kitten is not bored? (that's what i think)
i did explain in my application that i already have a 3lb yorkie, and 3 bunnies that are approximately the same size as the yorkie.
i am not sure if they did not read it or if they don't think it's sufficient company for a kitten.

i also mentioned that i want to meet the cat first to make sure all the furkids get along...
