Do you jog with your yorkie? I always wondered if Deegan would be able to keep up if I took him jogging with me? Does anyone out there jog with their yorkie, and if so - do you jog continuously or do you do intervals? How long do they hang in there for? Also - does anyone let their yorkie run along side a bike? I have a trailer that attaches to my bike, but Deegan will only sit in it quietly after he's tired... Usually I have to take him for a long walk to get him to sit quietly, but by that time I'm tired and don't want to go biking. So I thought about letting him run next to the bike for a bit to tire him out, but have been too afraid of trying it for fear he might get hurt... |
WOW!! A Yorkie jogger. I can't even get Gus to walk :) |
I jog with keely everyday. I ussually jog the whole time and if i stop she keeps dragging me until i joog again. BUt if ive already played soccer with her or soemthing she ussually dont want to jog the whole time. The bike thing is dangerous. I ride bike with my neighbors german shepherd, and even that can be dangerous. I have her fully trained to stay beside the bike so i cannot ram her with the tire, But a squrrel caught her one day and i almost broke her back paw with my front tire. A yorkie can easily be ran over by a bike. |
I have read that you shouldnt go on your bike with any dog.(unless they are travelling in the basket on the front...lol) If you are cycling and they need to stop for any reason..to catch their breath or if they are struggling to keep up, they wont be able to. Better to teach them to run after a ball, and bring it back to you. Thats what i do with molly, and she will happily do that for half an hour or more, which gives her planty of excercise, and then we have a sedate walk home, and we are both ready for a nap!! :) |

I ride with one of my dogs beside me all the time and it's perfectly safe if your dog is trained. You have to use a proper bike attachment like the 'walky dog'. You should NEVER try and ride a bike with your dog hooked on a leash. With the Walky Dog the dog cannot reach your tire and the spring on it keeps them from yanking you down. But my dog Forrest is a large dog and I wouldn't recommend trying to ride with a small dog. I don't think he would be tall enough. But I bet your baby would love to jog with you. And as far as how long he can go it really depends on him. Just keep a close eye on him and see what works for him :) He'll probably suprise you! |
My Bella jogs with my father everytime I come home from college. I would love to do it too...but I just can't keep up with her :dogwalk:. lol |
This gives me hope. I'm a runner and was hoping when Missy grows up she might be able to run with me. I use to ride my bike with my lab, until she got spooked one day and ran into my front tire taking us both out. I never did it again after that. |
I think you could surely try jogging with him, and if he tires out, pick him up for the rest of the jog. The extra weight can't be that much, and think of it as a little extra cardio! I would be scared to death to have him run alongside a bike ... too many "ifs". If you want to ride, put him in a backpack (frontpack?) so he gets the air and you get the exercise. |
I bet it all depends on the dog when it comes to how long they will last. Juicy could def out do me lol |
I wouldn't recommend it at all, certainly not on a bike. That's a recipe for disaster. As for jogging, the only way we do that is in an open field with one or more of the girls on a long (15 ft.) lead, so they get ahead and stay ahead, where they're visible and I have time to react if one of them stops or turns. Early on, I was jogging with Miss Daisy and she abruptly stopped (why not?) to smell a whatever, and I almost ran over her. Our granddaughter was running with her one day (against our orders), and Miss Daisy repeated the stop/smell maneuver. She did get run over, but luckily, not hurt. They're so small, there's just not a lot of room for error. Ben |
If your jogging/walking your dog he.she should always be on the side of you. You never let him/her in front. I lead trained keely so that may be a good start for you. If they arent in front of you and are walking by YOUR rules. There ears should be tucked back and there heads heald high and NOT to the ground. Otherwise stopping and almost getting run over can be an issue. Have you ever watched the dog whisperer? Cesar will give you alot of good tips if you catch a episode that tells you how to walk your dog properly :) I have found his shows to be a great help as i have been training keely. And Casey (Neighbors gsd) NEVER pulls on the leash while walking now. She is also lead trained thanks to cesar millan :) |
Keely_momma, you're right. if you want your dog to jog with you, train them to do it right. We're terrible in he training department. we went through basic training with Miss Daisy (she was our first ever dog) and she learned to walk/heel, but when we did go for walks, we decided that the walk was for her, not for us, and she took so much pleasure exploring her environment and we in watching her, that we never enforced the proper walking methods. We weren't going anywhere, anyway. Who cares if we stop to smell a hydrant here or there? My sister-in-law thinks we're nuts - when she goes for a walk, she's going going going, and our pups hold her up. But I don't know. We meander. Up the street, around the yard, through life. The pups have us trained, I guess, not the other way around. But I'm OK with that; I see a lot more of our neighborhood than I ever did before, and if I happen to know where the trees most likely to harbor squirrels are, that could be a valuable skill someday. :) Ben |

Like I stated before I was always too afraid to do the bike ride thing, and never will. But for the jogging I think I might start that on nice days... I'll just be running in the park along the walking trails so there's no worry about cars. But I will work his tolerance up by doing intervals...just like I learned. And I'm gonna try and find that episode with Cesar teaching the method that Keely's momma talked about. |
Hehe ... I run with my little guys down to the garbage shoot every morning to throw out the "poopie" A word they know ... and look forward to hearing every morning They love running with me They're only 3 months old so they can't run very far but an older orkie should be fine |
My husband jogs with our yorkie 3 mornings per week and he loves it - my husband that is.... no really they both do. It is a big joke around our neighborhood because when it is chilly he jogs Ollie with a sweater on him and doesnt feel very manly about it... |
Chloe likes to jog more than I do...well actually they both love to RUN .. I'm not much of a jogger but we do go for about an hour or so at night with a little jogging and some walking. But like I said I'm not a great jogger so I really don't tire either of them out as much as they do me :) |
Does size matter, for jogging that is? Is there a lower weight limit? |

I think she will. Chloe is 2.5 lbs. and not getting any bigger and she out runs me :D BUt like i said I'm more of a jog...stop...jog...stop kind of person. She is full of energy, but if I was a real runner i would maybe take a back type carrier incase she needed a break. |
