Silver hair :confused:I got a call from my friend who lives out of state today and she was a bit upset after a visit to her local Petco. She had her Yorkie, Peanut with her, he is almost a year and is about 9 pounds and has a lot of silver in his hair, not the steel blue. He is a cutie and I think he looks Yorkie to me, he looks a lot like my Axl in a way. anyway's she was approached by a lady who asked her what breed he was, When she said Yorkie she told her "OH no some where in his line he has Silky in him, look at all that silver." When my friend said no he was 100% Yorkie , he is AKC registered and she had his pedigree to prove it. Well she got snippy and said she should know as she judges dogs for dog shows! She started to put down poor Peanut again by saying if he was a pure Yorkie he would be small, as Yorkies do not get over 7 pounds:mad: So now my friend is wondering if Peanut has Silky in his line. I told her not to worry so much that the lady was RUDE and she did not know what she was talking about. She thinks this lady must know something because she judges dogs in shows and all that. Has anyone ever had something like that happen to them, and got you wondering about your dog? Also just because this lady so call judges dogs, does it make her an expert? She is very upset and I just don't know what to tell her other than she should join YT and see all the other Yorkies that have more Silver to them and are "Tea Pots" |
Your friend shouldn't take this woman's comments to heart - unfortunately there are rude people everywhere and most of them can't keep their opinions to themselves. My yorkie's colouring is much more silver than it is blue and she's over 7lb but she is a purebred yorkie - just not a standard acceptable to breed or show, which is fine by me because I just wanted a pet to love. I'm sure you friend's yorkie is adorable - tell her to join YT so we can all have a look!:D xxx xxx |
Some people feel they know everything when they know nothing! Tell your friend that color has nothing to do with the differences in silkies and yorkies. There are so many different colors of yorkies! Take a look at the following link to the FAQs about yorkies..there is a link to the comparison..also a link to the different colors. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...tions-faq.html Share it with your friend...and tell her to just love her baby and ignore the idiots of the world! |

People like that just make me so angry!! And because they have so little regard for others I put no value on what they have to say. Just because she "says" she's a dog judge, doesn't mean she really is, or is accredited, or has any actual knowledge about the Yorkie breed. What we do know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, is that she is a very rude person. I'd have probably quoted Mark Twain and said, "It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt." But then, I don't tolerate rude people very well. Please continue to encourage your friend to join here. She will see all the wonderful color, shapes and sizes these angels on earth come in. That is a small part of what makes the breed so appealing. There's just the right one for every taste. :) |
Both of mine are silver and one is 11 lbs and they are both yorkies. Obviously the lady knows the standard which is 7 lbs and under and blue and gold for the color but their are alot of yorkies that arent in the standard |
That lady was awful! Some people just think they know it all! And if she's such an "expert" why did she even have to ask what breed he is. She may be an "expert" of breed standards, but doesn't she know that dogs, no matter what the breed come in all shapes, colors, and sizes... just like humans! And seriously, she's probably just a 4H dog judge anyways! Show your friend a picture of my boys. Smokey is really silver, 14 lbs, and floppy eared and Chip is black as black can be and is 9 lbs and they are both 100% yorkies. http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...2/DSC04117.jpg http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...8/DSC04305.jpg http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...8/DSC04269.jpg |
I have both a silky girl and 2 yorkies boy and girl.. my Harry people usually mistaken for a silkie but his papers say yorkie, he is 8 pounds but his body is not obolong like my chanel's is. he is silver and tan. really I don't care what he is, he is not a show dog but mommys boy.. and daddy's buddy.. and yes, I have encountered rude people like that, and my answer is, hey I am happy with whatever he is and he is not a show dog but mommy's baby..:D:D:D and keep walking, I hate when people give unwanted and rude advise..LOL hugs, cArmen in nj |

That is a great way to handle idiots! None of mine are show quality and I love each one of them! I don't have them for show...they are pets which is what the majority are! |
Like in Medicine ... A Little Knowledge can be Very Hamful All Yorkies Are NOT under 7 lbs and Some Yorkies DO have a lot of silver in their hair Sounds like someone wanted to boast that they "judged" dogs more than they wanted to impart any real knowledge |
Don't worry about what that lady said about the little one . Here , I heard several comments about Frimousse that have long ears , long nose , long toothpick legs and no tail at all . I learned to don't give a damn about peoples bad talking about her . The more important in this life , is that I love her very much no matter if she fit the standard or not . |
Thanks for the replies, I will pass the information ladyjane provided and also tell her to just join YT! Her Peanut looks a lot like the coloring of Ashley V's Smokey. I pointed out what an "expert" she was having to ask what breed he was in the first place:rolleyes: She was a bit less stressed out in her E mail she sent this morning. I think that getting some sleep and having a clear head to look back on all that drama at the pet store sure helped her see things in a different light. |
So true... I agree with everyone else on this one. Everyone has an opinion and a lot of people refuse to keep it to themselves. What was that lady thinking she was doing? Helping? Well, I would tell your friend to join YT to hear everyone's support. But mostly, to love her little one and forget what anyone else tells her the breed is. If its Yorkie its yorkie and that's that!!:D |
Like others have said , If this "judge" was so knowledgeable , shouldn't she have know the breed without having to ask? I don't watch many dog shows but I have never seen a judge fumbling about trying to figure out the breed she was judging  I have a feeling she was just trying to "puff " up her own image by saying that. Tell your friend people like that are not worth her time or energy. I wouldn't waste one more second thinking about what a rude , uninformed , ego inflated stranger had to say. She should join and post pictures so we can tell her how cute her baby is:D |
wow Wow, you would think if she was a judge of yorkies in particular she would know the standard is 4-7lbs but just like any other breed and humans even, yorkies are not always conformed to AKC standard and are found smaller than 4 lbs and larger, than 7 lbs. and also come in silver and not just steel blue. How rude could that lady be.. I too have a male that is AKC registered and is 8.5lbs with champions all through out his line and my aunt has a AKC registered Yorkie who now tips the scales at 23 lbs. So we will give that rude judge the benefit of the doubt and say she is a new judge and doesn't realize that there is a whole population of yorkies out there that are NOT 4-7lbs. and NOT steel blue and tan and and leave it at that. |
