Bathing question When you bathe your baby, do you bathe their whole head as well? I only ask this cause I was always told you bathe from the neck behind and all and never put anything on their heads/faces and ears and all.. is this true? We've always bathed Daphne lik that as shes a pom and doesnt really need washing/bathing around her mouth, but Trixie of course has hair around there that gets kinda dirty and just in the food and water a lot.. is it okay to wash her around her mouth and ears? is this just a *saying*? Do you do your babies like that? And if so-does it burn them. I use J&J Baby Shampoo on the girls, so it shoudln't burn them if it happens to get in their eyes or whatever.. but just wondering if you guys wash their whole faces and all to keep it clean. |
I wash my dogs face. They always have eye junk I am trying to get off. I also brush Chachis hair with the conditioner on and it takes out all his matts. His hair goes from cottony to silky smooth. |
Cup some water in your hands and wet his face that way make sure it doesnt get in his ears .. thats how i do it .. :) |

I wash their faces, scrub their head hair and under the chin. I use a spray on conditioner every day when I brush them which seems NOT to make their hair greasy. |
Since J&J baby shampoo is probably tear-free, it probably won't burn their little eyes! Just out of curiosity, how often do you wash your babies? |

That cute babys smell is such a plus!!! I just wanted to make sure I wasn't a crazy washer or something, but I think I'm average in the bathing department. Thanks! |
Every morning I clean Crystals eyes and clean the "junk" that starts to collect under her eyes and in the evening I wash the hair under her chin that drops in the food dish BUT when I give a bath, I put cotton in her ears and wash that head and face really good which is every Saturday. I use dog shampoo but the J&J baby shampoo on her head and face and I mix it in a measuring glass so it's fairly weak and easy to rinse out. Even though it J&J you want to be careful of their eyes but water in their eyes is no problem. |
I bathe my dogs about every 10 days, but I have a problem with my little one, Scout. He has had 2 external ear infections-I think from getting water in his ears. I have tried putting cotton in his ears for bath and he shakes the cotton out immediately. I tried putting vaseline on the cotton, then putting it in his ears (to put an extra water barrier)-but he manages to shake that out too. Any of you guys who put cotton in their ears have any tips to keep it in??? |
Another question... I have thought about getting some of those doggie face wipes (are they like baby wipes?) that I've heard others talking about, and just wash Scout's body in the bath, then keep his head and face clean with the wipes. Does anyone know if this gets them clean enough? Man, I just love getting their faces clean and pretty and fluffy, but I don't want him to keep getting ear infections! |

her bath so I don't have a wiggley dog but if you wash the body really well, condition it and rinse it (of course you will get a little run off once you start the face) but it's the head that bothers them the most. Then put cotton in ears not to large a piece BUT NOT TOO SMALL put your hand over the head so that you can hold the ears down while you wet the entire head - at that point let them shake cotton out because it will take awhile to wash the face with very weak J&J shampoo inotherwords mixed with water so it's just enough to make a tiny lather and will be easy to get out. I use a little soft brush to go around the face ( now you can't lather like you do on the body) then run a gentle stream of water, cotton back in, hold the ears down and you are finished. You've worked with the head last and then start drying the head first on gentle dry while the dog is in a wrap - towel best except for head. When drying, ears are very very sensitive to heat . so don't keep on that area too long at a time. I cover Crystals eyes alot while I am drying her also !! Good Luck!! For those of you with dogs with ear infections alot I would call your vet or vet tech and see if they think the whips might work. |
I can't believe I've never thought of holding his ears down! Sometimes the most obvious things you don't think of....geesh, I feel silly. I will definetely do that. Maybe inlist an extra set of hands. :-) |

this thing planned like General Patton planned his army!!!! |
I wash all of bentley's head..He some how always manages to get dirty EVERYWHERE! i scrub his tear stains with j&j baby shampoo b/c it's tearless.. and i usually cup water in my hands to wash it..and i'll tilt his head back and poor water down his head but between his ears so no water really gets in them! |
Chloe and Lacey get a full bath every week and each day they get brushed and their faces and personal areas are wiped with Baby Wipes. Yorkies usually don't smell much after the puppy breath stage but my vet said it is usually because of something in the face area. So, if there is a smell, check out the face and body, mine will smell great from the neck down sometimes. I use J&J on the face and head. Yeah, I get that oh no, not again look but moms just have to do it. |
I wash every inch. I use baby tearless shampoo on her face and just really wash/comb it good because the food gets caught, and the water and they drool. She doesn't mind except the rinsing. And then she smells so good, and I don't mind the puppy kisses. I try not to spray into her ears or nose/mouth, but just let it dribble. That's the only part she doesn't like. I have not had a problem with any ear aches or anything all these years either like I did with my pekes. Best of luck... |
Oh Cute and your name is J Wash!! |
Asleep? Can I ask one question.... for those of you that bathe your Yorkies...are they ASLEEP while you bathe them? I just show Chelsea the towels, and she is gone,.... poof,... invisible....then I have to bribe her, so I can EVEN catch her, to give her a bath. She hates water, she hates shampoo, she hates toweling and she hates brushing! I must have one strange wittle Yorkie...she loves dirt, grass, bugs, birds, more dirt, more digging. take her to someone else (nothing like hurting my feelings) Someone said to me once "Just clip her nails while she is sleeping" Sure!! Have you ever seen a dog jump 6 feet and head for the ceiling. I guess they all have their quirks, |

Bathing Maybe it's a puppy thing - Winston is just 13 weeks - but if I don't bathe him every other day he gets really stinky! :shocked7q I use a tearless puppy shampoo, and I wash his whole head and face. He is SO good about everything....washing, toweling, blow drying, and even combing his face, but he hates having his body brushed. I'm curious about the spray conditioner you guys have mentioned....do you recall the brand? I'd love to try it if it helps with the tangles without making him greasy...baths every other day is enough! :D Thanks! |
Teddy also gets washed head to paws...In regard to his head I use a wash cloth just like I did when my kids were little to cover his little eyes. He is used to the routine and does quite well... |
tired after bath Susan gets so tired from having a bath that afterward trying to comb her out is a riot. I hold her front end up and brush that while the back end sags then hold the back end up and she tries to reach the table to put her head down. She just can't stay awake. Also she keeps trying to climb out of the sink and up to my shoulders. I'm getting soaked and the bath takes 3 times as long. This last time she did a little better about staying in, even had her front paws hitting bottom from time to time. Is there something I can do to get her to stay put better or will she improved as times goes on? The poodle I had growing finally got to where she stopped climbing -- most of the time -- but it was always touch and go. |
Mine are used to baths and I do scrub their faces, not hard or anything, but I certainly wash them with their shampoo. I find that their hair on their faces is long and it gets dirty! I dont think it hurts them to wash it. They certainly smell sweeter when I wash their faces. They get a little nervous when their bangs get wet and cover their eyes, but I just hold them so they dont try to jump out of the sink! |
I bathe them all over being careful not to get shampoo in their eyes. |

 What kind of shampoo and conditioner do you use. My Sissy (10 mths) hair is cottony and i would like it to be slky and shiney. my other Daisy(11wks) has wirey hair |
I use Chris Christensen Shampoo, conditioner and Ice on ice. I now also use cowboy magic detangler because it is awesome for a cotton coat. Here is a link for the cowboy magic and you can find the Chris Christensen by googling their name. http://www.tobysnaturalpets.com/dog.htm |
