How Do I Clip the Hair Near the Private Area on a Male?

Gucci needs the hair clipped hear his area I'm Scared to death I will cut his little private! .. can those that do it, tell me their method and what type of scissors or other instrument that is used so that I may decide what is the safest way to do this...?

Hi,

I groom my boy myself. I actually bought some clippers and use that to trim the private areas and his stomach. Just take the clippers down there and I always am very careful with them so I don't knick him. I have seen groomers do this and they just don't care. They will just trim him up quickly but I am scared I will cut him. You can try scissors but you have to be very careful not to cut him. I used to use scissors and that is how I did it. I find it easier to use clippers for his privates, stomach and feet.

hmm... If you arent comfortable with it, bring him to the groomer and get them to do it for the first time and ask them if they could show you some pointers. Im sure it isnt very costly for them to do it once. It would probably ease your mind and ease your stress..

It depends on what you're trying to accomplish. Some people like a puppy cut with everything underneath clean shaven...some people like a full coat with a wee-wee trail. If you decide you like the clean shaven idea then that is done with clippers...very carefully. If you want a full coat then leave the hair on the winky long so it will direct the pee stream to the ground instead of off to the side and into his coat or onto the back of his front legs.

Thank you for the reply, I think I may end up doing this in the end lol I was just trying to figure out how it's even done, since most say they do it themselves.

My2Boyz - I basically was just trying to keep his belly clean, sometimes when he goes pee he gets a little under his belly because he is very furry. Should i just trim the radius around the private area ? I may have the groomer do it... I am only worried they will knick him more than I would because he moves a lot!

Moses - I am kind of scared to use scissors I may just go the groomer because I am scared of using the clippers to, he is just so small.

Hmm.. I have never heard that... My boy has a long coat but I keep him clean shaven it just seems easier to keep it cleaned up down there so I don't have to wipe the pee out of his hair.

But he always pees on his feet. It drives me crazy. Does the long hair on the pee pee really work...LOL

Don't be afraid There shouldn't be too much hair down there anyway that you won't be able to see
Don't use a clipper With a scissor just cut the area that needs to be cut
if you're afraid of cutting his privates place a finger right where you don't want to cut and leave the hair outside that area
The main thing is that the puppy needs to be calm in your hands
If he's wiggling and squirming that's no good

It is something you will have to get used to. I stopped taking mine to the groomers because most of them were just mean and my boy was nicked on several occasions by these groomers. Make sure you research your groomer and like the last person said maybe you will be lucky and someone can show you. I just lay my boy on his back and he will just lay there for me. So it is fairly easy!

You can use treats to teach them to do what you need to as well. And give them plenty of praise.

Joey's breeder suggested leaving what's called a pee string to direct the urine flow, it should be 1 1/2 - 2 inches. We shave the tummy, but this longer hair here really helps. He never pees on himself, and he has a long coat.

A groomer will actually use clippers on the private area. It is much easier and they are less likely to cut him. But if you are really scared let someone else show you how to do it.

You know I had a thread on this once and no one ever mentioned this. I am going to try it. I do shave my boys stomach and pee pee, I just like him to be clean cut. But again he always pees on his long coat. If this helps this would be great. BUT i guess you do have to clean that pee string all the time...LOL..

Actually no, I never clean it, except regular baths, urine really doesn't have bacteria unless an infection is present, and is relatively sterile, and the thin string dries quickly.

I just don't like the goo I guess..hehe.. Thats why I started shaving him down in the first place... BTW, I love the new Avatar of Joey it is very cute!!

Thank you, not sure if anybody would get the Mr Hanky reference. Honestly, Joey's never had any goo down their, but I wouldn't like that either. The "string" can be trim so it's relatively thin.

We'll I definaly get the Mr. Hanky reference..lol.. I am definatly going to try this with the "string". I just taught by boy how to SHAKE in two days. These Yorkie babies are so smart! But I guess that is another thread...hehe
