The problem I have with mixed breeding is that the results are too unpredictable, you just don't know what you will get. All puppies are cute, and people adopt a puppy and are disappointed because it doesn't have the traits of some other mixed breed they've seen. With a purebred, especially from a good breeder, you can be pretty sure, it's going to resemble the dog you were hoping for. That means fewer dogs needing to be rehomed. Mix breeds often end up in shelters, and many are inadaptable. I also have a problem with any breeder who is breeding for money, there are enough dogs, it should only be done to improve the breed. Let me make it clear, I happen to love some mixed breeds or "mutts", as many of us affectionately call them. I think they can be some of the cutest dogs I've ever seen, I just don't think they should be bred, with all the surplus dogs we have. I think many breeders do it because they had no breeding rights for their dog, and offspring can't be registered anyway, and/or the dogs they are using are poor representatives of their breed. I wouldn't want to reward a person like this with money. On the other hand, some breeders of Labradoodles seem to be trying for a new breed, and there are some breeders who are taking this seriously. In the past, most of my dogs have been from shelters, and I was against purebreds, but I really wanted a specific dog this time with specific traits, looks, and size, so a purebred seened to be the best option. The hard part was finding a breeder who really is trying to improve the breed, but they are out there, if you look hard enough. |
It's alright I just thought I would mention that just incase some people read that who get offended. I have my thoughts about it and for me it's mostly the issues of the prices for these dogs. In my city you can get the mixed for the same price of a purebred. It's good that you have strong opinion it just would be really good if you take that and put it to good use, maybe educate people around your city and so on or even start an internet group. I look at kijiji too and it is full of mixes but like mentioned if people are buying them they will just keep having them. |
Just a little FYI...its been said on many websites....this being one Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie Breed History, how the breed was created in England that the Maltese was possibly crossed with other terriers to develop the Yorkshire Terrier way back when. :) |
Now, there are a lot of yorkies, that don't look yorkie to me, that people have paid high price for. I do know a few breeders that breed morkies, there is a high demand for them. They are adorable, heck, in my family I have 8 morkies..And each one of them is fantastic..! I know one breeder that has bred purebred beautiful yorkies, and also morkies, you know which ones she still has because she couldn't find homes for them(not because she was asking too much), but, she's still got the yorkies. Myself, I have no problem with people mixing 2 breeds, but, that's just my opinion |
Well, the reason I'm against breeding of "designer dogs" is because they're "designer"... meaning they're fashionable at a time and as we know, fashions come and go :( While Jessica Simspon may have made is super chic to tote around a cockapoo, I fear this too may become a fad and we'd be left with lots of leftover designer dogs that no one wants anymore, kwim? I'm not really a "breed snob". Personally, I like having a purebred because I know that their genes are pretty stable and like the idea of their being "standards" of temperament, looks, etc etc. Before I got my yorkie I did look high and low on petfinder.com because I do think that we should give adoptive animals a chance first. Most of the dogs though did not work well with my lifestyle (no kids, no other pets, no this no that, etc etc). I eventually got Kingston from his previous owner who simply didn't want him anymore. Win-win for both of us :) A "designer dog" is really just an overpriced (and usually super adorable!) mutt... not that there is anything wrong with having a mutt (if I found one that would fit me I'd get one :p) and if people don't have a problem with it, then good for them, go for it. I was considering getting a Shichon (a Bichon Fries and Shih Tzu mix ) before Kingston and eventually felt that I would not be comfortable getting a designer breed for several reasons: 1) their genes are still relatively new and it is unknown how "healthy" they are and 2) Although I could look at both parents to guess how they'd turn out, again, there was just not enough research to know for certain and 3) I just couldn't justify paying $900 for a "trendy" dog! :p This is just my opinion. I hope I haven't offended anyone because that was not my intention. Basically, I'm against designer dogs because I think they're more of a trend and I think it's horrible to use animals as fashion statements and because I think research should be done prior to making designer breeds to be sure that there will be no birth defects or anything like that. :) -kiki |
A lady in my area was breeding Morkies. She didnt know much about breeding. Didnt know it was truly wrong to breed mixbreed dogs. She took great care of her dogs loved them all. Her puppies went to there new homes with needles, vet checks etc. BUt she didnt have contracts stating that the animal id to be spayed/nuetered at the proper age like reputable breeder do. When animals come into my shelters care, we always ask where they aquired the dogs from. We got 18 morkies over the course of 2 years. Then a lady came in to give a donation and when she said her name , it was the same lady that all these people that handed there morkies over in our care obtained there pupies from. So, my mom, said to her "I think we deserve a bigger donation" At this point she was very hostile towards this woman. and the lady just lloked at her in shock . Then my mom explained to her that 18 of her pups came into our care, and thatshe , had held at least 5 of them while the died. 6 of those morkies got a home. 6, out of 18 dogs, 6 got a new home. 6 ! Because this lady had absolutely NO clue where he dogs were accually going 12 dogs got euthanized. And we have a high adoption rate. we try being a No kill shelter, but its so hard. After a certain amount of time, it just needs to be done. |
Ill be 100% honest, i bought my dogs because i wanted the cross of the 2 dogs that they are. I am veryhappy and i am lucky to have 2 very healthy, happy adorable babies. |

I don't think breeding two breeds together just for a profit is okay, but like someone else said, some people do that with purebreds too. Some people though aren't doing it to be "designer" or to gain a profit, but to maybe come up with a new breed that is recognized as such. Every breed came about somehow and it was done by mixing breeds together. And I know there are a lot more mutts in shelters, but there are also a lot of purebreds in the shelters too. |

I really don't think the "designer dogs" will be going anywhere in the near future, they've been around for a long time. My sister had her first puppy when she was 17 or 18 and she's going on 58 now, and it was a pekapoo:) |
