My Broken BabyTheo
 

My 8mnth, 3lb yorkie jumped off my bed and broke both front legs-radial ulnas. It was a terrible mistake ever putting him up on the bed with me while I worked on my lap top. He cried like I had never heard before and of course he was not moving due to it being both front legs. I am really missing him since he had to have surgery and can't come home till Tues. I feel so helpless without him! What can I expect from his recovery, will he always be in pain or will that subside with healing, what can I do to make sure he doesn't hurt himself again? Please any suggestions I haven't mentioned if you have experienced first hand broken legs? Thanks BabyTheo's Mom.

I am so terribly that this happened to your sweet baby. I have had no experience with this type injury but want you to know I will be praying for you and little Baby Theo. God bless you both.

I can't help you with your questions. But, I want to let you know how sorry I am that this happened to you. Please don't blame yourself, but, this is a good eye opener to a lot of people that could have this happen to them. I will keep your baby in my prayers. Ask the vet, as he would probably be the best one to give you the answers as far as pain. I'm sure he'll probably tell you to make sure no more jumping, and even if the pain does go away, I'm sure he's going to be sore for quite sometime..

last night my 7month old girl fell off my bed, luckily we didn't get broken bones, her knee went out of place and the vet ended up telling me that she has a luxating patella in both legs...
The best way to avoid the accident again is to either get pet stairs or don't leave him unattended on the bed.
I can't fit stairs in my room so I just don't leave her on my bed without me now.
I imagine your baby will have a hard time getting around with the casts on, I dealt with a cat with one back leg broken and he had some trouble walking with it. The vet will probably send you home with some pain killers.

I don't know anything about this, but I just wanted to say that I'm so sorry and I hope little Theo heals quickly and fully.

I bring Lexi on the bed with me only on occasion, and only to watch TV with me. Sometimes, out of nowhere, she will just bolt up and start running and jumping around, and it can be hard to catch her. Once or twice, she may have gone right off the bed. Maybe having carpeting in the room has helped.

Unfortunately, I've dealt with a broken front leg on 2 different dogs in the past year. First was Scarlett, who was running outside and stepped in a small hole one of the other pups had dug. She broke the elbow on her right foreleg. In that case, a pin was needed to repair her leg and she had to be kept very still for 8 weeks. It was a loooong 8 weeks as she wanted to run around well before the 8 weeks were up but it was critical to keep her inactive for the entire healing process. Then, this past Spring, Sassy was reaching under a door that had a little clearance under it, just enough for her to get her leg under it. She was pawing under the door and decided to pull her leg out only she kind of bolted and pulled up and snapped her upper arm bone above the elbow. In Sassy's case, all was needed was a splint for 4 weeks but she still had to be kept inactive for that time. She was lucky in that the break wasn't on a growth plate. In your case, with both legs broken, he'll probably not be getting around too well but just make sure he doesn't do anything to re-injure those legs. Best of luck to you and Theo. Also, both my girls girls healed very nicely and now you would never know they were ever injured.

If he is having surgery I am going to assume he is having plates/pins put in...my friend had that done with her yorkie that broke her leg and she was up wanting to play the next day:eek: She kept her in a stroller for the 8 weeks. She said it was hard because they are not in a cast and they feel better. Be patient but with proper care your little yorkie will be fine.

I am so sorry to hear about your baby. I have always trained mine to use the ramps (scamp ramps) I have by the beds or a stool to get up on the couch. They learn very quickly to only use these when getting up and down. Hopefully your baby will make a full recovery.

Aw, poor Baby Theo! I'm so sorry this happened. Poor little guy--and Mom!

I am so sorry for what happened to you... if you sit at the bed on your computer.. could I suggest the baby be on a harness and hooked to the headboard so you know how far the baby can go... I did that one time with a puppy that was a singleton that once mom left I put him in bed with us doing that.. made sure he did not have enough to be able to go far..
A friend of ours had a yorkie that fell down a flight of steps while she attended a furneral.. when she came hom tommi had fallen down the stairs.. and that night she was put down.. she pulled her front shoulder out so bad that it could not be repaired.. this same dog had had a previous broken leg from jimping off a couch.. and had surgery and the stress of the surgery she lost all her hair.. but this dog was a rescue and was not in good shape.. but I would not have left her in a laundry room without barring off those steep steps..
I had a yorkie at 5 years old that fell off the bed and died within 10 minutes.. she punctured her left lung and bled out so fast.. the vet told me there was no way I could or would have made it to the vet.. I was sleeping..I have been scared and nervous ever since.. anne
