Unsure if My Yorkie is Purebread Hi there, My mom and boyfriend surpised me with a "teacup," if you will, yorkie for my birthday. When they brought her home, I was shocked because she looks like a hybrid of a chihuahua and a yorkie and she was/ is super tiny. Apparently, she was born on October 4th, is between 8-9 weeks, and is purebread. My mom said she saw both the dam and the sire and they are both registered purebread yorkshire terrier through AKC. I did some research and i saw on a site that a dam may be impregnated by two different dogs and can have a purebread and a half breed in the litter. I'm a bit skeptical about everything, so I just want some clarity. Also, I am concerned that they the people who sold my mom the dog gave her - Suki - to us at less than 8 weeks. If you could please give me any feedback, I'd appreciate it. I have links in this thread so you can check her out. I did come across a site that showed yorkie's puppy stages and saw that one of the pictures looks just like Suki. Suki 1 http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...ul/photo-1.jpg Suki 2 http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...ul/photo-2.jpg Suki 3 "http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b282/crystalgotsoul/photo-2-1.jpg *Please excuse the pictures, she was asleep, when i decided to post a thread. Website Yorkshire Terrier, understanding yorkie puppy vital growth stages how to be a puppy *Look at the 4-6 weeks picture with the 2 puppies - she looks just like the one with her mouth open |
hmm... well because of her hair- which should be quite a full thick coat- i'm going to guess that she isn't pure... bUT i could be wrong. She does look 1/2 chi to me but ah- who cares :) she is beautiful! Did she come with papers? if she DOES have a pure mom and dad who your mom said are both AKC- she should have come with papers too then. either way- you got a beauty. She looks very tiny and probably did come home too early- but you have her now so love her up :) What is her name? |
I agree with Marci. She does look like she had a little chi in her, but she's adorable!! |
She could be purebred. She has a thin, wirey coat. Which is not uncommon. I have washed young ones and when they're wet I could've sworn they looked like chihuahuas. Did you receive AKC papers? BTW, she's very cute! |
you know i got my baby from i guess what's called a backyard breeder, she had yorkie's posted in the paper for $350 so i called her when i spoke with her she seemed very knowledgable but she referred to the puppies she had for $350 as "the ugliest in the litter" but i said being a breeder she is shooting for certain standards so i would come see what she had. when i arrived she had 4 puppies in the house 2 as she said were her ugly ones and the other 2 were beautiful. She explained these were puppies she sells for 1200.00. I noticed the ugly ones had slightly longer legs but they were adorable the 2 other ones "were" beautiful but to me they were too small for me they weighed about 2 lbs. and cost a whole lot more. But you know i took an ugly one home with me because to me he is beautiful He is 5mos old tomorrow and weighs 5 lbs now. since i only paid $350 for him she would not give me papers (said she did not register that litter) but it really doesn't matter to me i love him. he has a great personality and i get compliments all the time of how beautiful he is and you know they are right!! He is just as pretty as those tiny ones she had. __________________ |
Well, I think she's very cute! It doesn't matter what she is :) |
Thank you I've grown quite fond of him veryfast! |
Do you really expect a 8 - 9 weeks old pup to have a full floor lenght coat . To the OP give the puppy a chance to grow up before cryimg for nothing . |
2 Attachment(s) Here are 2 pictures of Ti-Pou , the first one as a puppy and the other as a young adult . Of course as a puppy , peoples rejected him but when he began to grow a coat someone came and adopted him . |
To me it looks like it might be a mix, but I agree with everyone that he is adorable either way. If he does turn out to be a mixed breed, keep in mind that mixed breeds are often healthier then pure breds. If it matters to you, then if people ask, say YES he is 100% pure yorkie, and I can trace his family tree all the way back to England! His great-great-great-great grandmother was a ratter for the Queen! Who's going to contradict you? ;) |
Your puppy looks to be quite young. And I also think that the pup looks Yorkie to me. I think that given 2 to 4 weeks, when the pup is 10 to 12 weeks old it will look a lot different and it's hair will be a bit longer and fuller looking. Your puppy looks a bit like my Yumi Yasha did as a baby, my breeder sent me weekly photos of her, and she is 100% Yorkie as that was the only dogs my breeder had. |
It is reallyu easy to find out. The test is very affordable120. total. Save your money, because I can tell you, that is a yorkie. |
By the way, love love love the ears |

Give the benefit of the doubt... "Lesser" animals are just like humans in that there are variations in phenotypes. My little girl looked like a mini German Shepherd until she was around 7 months. After that I don't know exactly what happened but now she looks all yorkiw, never mind that she is ALL TERRIER!! Just take a look in my albums how much she has changed since April. :animal-pa Trevor |
She may be mixed, but she could also just be a product of bad breeding practices. Either way, she is adorable! |

I got my first yorkie at 7 weeks, she didn't look anything like that. she was a fluff ball. I really think these breeders need to start being more honest with people. I'm glad she's got you for a mommy, sounds like you love her, and that's the main thing, is that she gets lots of love.. |
This is a good post...I wish i had a digital pic of Keegan when we got him 7 years ago. He was long & skinny, his hair was all knotted up & he looked cross-eyed...but I LOVED him at first sight. If you want a visual, maybe what we called him at that time will help....Keegie the cross-eyed weezel! He still doesn't look like most yorkies but I tell you, that boy can put out some loving! |
I think she looks like a yorkie. Is she 8 weeks old? Just hold her and love her she is still very young and should be with her mom until 12 weeks...good luck and send pics as she grows. |
She is so cute! She looks mixed, but I bet if you give her a little more time to grow, you would be able to be a little more sure. Either way, she's adorable! |
I too am unsure if mine is full yorkie (she doesn't have all the brown around her nose like most do) but I really couldn't care less. I actually was considering buying a yorkie mix anyway. I think some of the mixes are just adorable. And I love my little girl no matter what anyway! The vet told me that she looked full yorkie to her but you could never be positive even with a dna test. |
Thanks for all the replies I didn't intend to sound as if I was complaining, just inquiring since my mom did spend the $$ for her. She is a great healthy puppy, I couldn't ask for more. I love her regardless if she is purebreed or not. Thank you again for all the feedback! cris :) |

Forgot to post this in my initial thread! My mom actually found the ad for Suki in the PennySaver (its like the classifieds). The woman wasn't an official breeder according to my mom. She also didn't register the litter. I'm okay with that because Suki is awesome with or without the papers. I'll post more pictures soon! Thank you again for your replies! Happy Holidays! |
Yeah, she def has some Chi in her, but as long as you love her, it doesn't really matter, right? :) It does stink though if your mom got hosed on paying full price though :( |
Yes, post pictures of this little baby :) As long as your family is happy and love this new little puppy, then i think everyone wins. Allow the little one to grow up some, and see the changes in her. I think it might be just too early to tell, and right now it is a guessing game. More then likely , your new puppy will be a pure bred , w/o papers. That is fine too. A lot of pure breds do not have papers, it does not make them any less pure. |
:)yup she is a yorkie I have had two litters where 1 female out of each litter comes out that way. Don't worry she will grow into her hair, it just takes a little longer than mosts. Most often they will have the darker hair also when they are full grown.:) Don't worry she's adorable! |
She's a beautiful baby,,, just give her lots of love and plenty of snuggles, she'll blossom and be gorgeous! She will be missing her mom and will need lots & lots of lovin, she'll be fine. Sending hugs from Alabama ((((suki)))) |
Hmmm...this is a tough one  No matter what she is, she is adorable...(but in the second picture, especially) she sort of looks like she could have some Chi in her - but of course I couldn't say for sure...I guess only her breeder would know the real answer. Something about her head/facial shape in the second picture reminded me a little of a Chi....but who *really* knows for sure. Regardless, she is so so sweet!!! :D  |
