Do you have allergies and are fine around your Yorkie?? My fiance and I plan to get our first Yorkie in January! He has animal allergies, but I have heard from many people that Yorkies are hypoallergenic as they have hair, not fur. We are viewing some on Sunday to be sure before we commit to getting ours in January. I would just like to hear of some of your experiences with allergies and Yorkies. Thanks!! |
I have allegies but I am fine with my yorkie :) Quote:

My daughter also has allergies. I have 3 yorkies and she has been just fine with them. We just find that if she really plays with them she needs to wash her hands after because her eyes and nose start up. It is really not too bad my daughter really has allergies bad when she goes to her friends house who has a german shepherd she has to bring her benedryl. Overall I'd really have to say it hasn't been an issue. Good luck with your baby!:) :aimeeyorkCOCO :aimeeyorkPEBBLES :aimeeyorkTRIXIE |
my nephew has extreme allergies and he does great with my four just be sure to groom regularly. |
I agree I give mine baths once a week or so. When they are dirty that's when it's worse. If I keep them clean it's much better. Besides I don't like smelly dogs. :aimeeyorkCOCO :aimeeyorkPEBBLES :aimeeyorkTRIXIE |
My hubby has alot of problems with allergies but never has had a problem with our two yorkies. :yorkiesar:happyboun:rollingey Paula |
Do you have allergies I have allergies but the yorkies don't bother it. Its the weather, when a front comes in. my nose runs, Don't worry Cheryl/Jack/Bella;) |
My son has allergies to animals...and he has not had a problem with our Yorkie.... Go for it girl!! Good luck :>) |
I have allergies and I am fine......we just wash Chino once a week |
NO Problems I have serious Allergies, I cannot be around Cats at all......but I have NOT had any Problems w/my 3 Yorkies. I also have asthma and they do not make me have any Breathing problems whats so ever. I have had them for 4 yrs. now and I do all their "Grooming" and they are very Clean, they even sleep w/me every Night so they have to be! I'm sure you wont' have any problems believe me that will be the last thing you will have to worry about. Good Luck on your Quest to find the Perfect Puppy!:aimeeyork |
I'm miserable with allergies around dogs that shed or bigger dirty dogs, and I simply can't handle cats AT ALL. But I haven't had a single issue with our new yorkie(ish) pup Nikko, and he's all over us all the time. I figure not only do they not shed, but the majority of them are really small too, so whatever bit of allergens they may still carry, there's just not enough dog to produce much. Just be sure to keem him or her bathed and groomed. We're probably planning on keeping a puppy cut for a long time, partially due to the smokin' hot summers here and partially due to it cutting down even more on allergies. But like I said, no allergies for us so far, s'all good. Good luck! I'm sure you'll be fine. :-) Lauren & Nikko |
Not only do I have terrible allergies, my sons do to. So, bad that we have to watch whose friends houses they can go to sometimes. I've had yorkies for 20 years and have NEVER had a problem and either have the kids. I think you'll be fine! |
Thanks for the help!! Wow--thanks for all the help! This site is amazing! You all are so friendly. From what all of you have said, it looks like we will be able to get our Yorkie! It is cold here in Canada (-10 celcius):rain: right now, so I will have to get her a coat or sweater and booties for the winters walks! Do you all go to a groomer to get haircuts? Or do you do it yourself? What is the average price? Thanks a lot for the help!:) |
Yes, I am allergic to dogs. I think I am mildly allergic to dogs. My allergies only bother me when I cut my Yorkie's hair. When I cut my Yorkie's hair, I cannot stop sneezing. I just avoid cutting my dog's hair to stop allergies attack and take them to the groomers. Sometimes, I cannot allow my dogs to lie on my bed, because I start to get a stuffy nose. I think they bring some of the allergens inside my house. In the spring, I try to wash them once a week to get rid of allergens like mountain cedar. |
My grandmother has COPD and Callie curls up in her lap all the time and my grandma does really well but if she is around a dog with fur she cant breath well and her eyes start to water. |
I have asthma/allergies and just wanted to let you know no dog is hypo allergenic, no matter what anyone tells you. If your fiance is allergic to dander, a yorkie will still have dander. Of course they have much less dander than other dogs -- but depending on his level of allergies it could still affect him. Also, allergies worsen over time usually so although he may not react to a yorkie on first meeting, if dander builds in your home the allergies could become more severe. I would suggest getting an allergy screening done (if he hasn't already) to see what level of allergic reaction he has to dogs. I'm not trying to dissuade you from getting a yorkie as I know many have no problems, but it really all depends on the person! Good luck! |
I am allergic to dog "dander" and cat "hair". My two yorkies and one toy poodle do not bother my allergies. However, our labs when we had them did. I also had a bichon (now gone to the Rainbow Bridge) that did not bother me. So for me I am okay with yorkies, bichons, and poodles. I understand that schnauzers are also non-allergenic. |
I forgot to add that I have HEPA air filters in every room of my house running all the time. It really helps. Also we have no carpeting so I "used" to use throw rugs. However, the throw rugs are the same as wee wee pads to my two baby yorkies so I had put them away for now. |

My mom and I both have some pretty bad allergies. Sapphire doesn't bother them though. Good luck with your new baby! :) |
My youngest son and I, both have allergies, mine are environmental allergies, my son's is to animals, but he has not have any problems with Max, at first I kept Max from my son's room, or his bed, he would wash his hands after playing with Max, but little by little we realized that he was fine, besides, who is going to get a boy to wash his hands that often? One thing thou, he (Max) gets a bath every week, and we vacuum everyday, not only helps with the allergies, but with the fleas as well. |
I have allergies and just to need to wash the babies once a week. If they get smelly they do bother me, but any other time I am 100% around them :) |
I have dog allergies as well. I can't be around my brother's golden for more than a few hours without coming home a swollen drippy mess. But I have never had issues with my two. It might be a good idea to keep the pup trimmed short. I find that they shed less. And I do groom mine on my own. It costs about 60 bucks to get them both professionally done. And depending on where you live, it costs more. Best of luck! Hope you find the dog of your dreams! |
I am allergic to cats and really bad with rabbits (I found out when after rescuing one) and I have never had problems with my Yorkies. :) |
Groomers well, I hope I can help you but where you live is way different than me. I live in Texas. We have a mobil groomer who comes to the house. They charge me 35.00 per yorkie I have (2). You, might look in the phone book and see what is available. Hope this helps Cheryl/Jack/Bella:) |
I am VERY allergic to dogs & especially cats.....I can't deal with cats at all. My allergies are Horrible! I get the works....stuffy/runny nose, sneezing, itchy-watery eyes, & I get asthma triggered from allergies. Cats, I can't do anything about.....no matter what medications I have taken or whatever procedures, I just can't take them. They make me feel really miserable. Dogs are not as bad for me, but I still get allergy attacks pretty bad. We just got Rocky, our 9 week old Yorkie, on Wednesday & I have to say that it's not that bad! Yes, Yorkies are hypoallergenic dogs, but that does not mean that allergies won't be triggered by them. Sometimes, he still causes me to get asthma, but I have my inhaler ready in my purse all the time. What I have been doing since bringing Rocky home is take 1 Clartin a day....this definitely has helped a lot & makes my allergies not so bad. I am learning to adjust to them....Rocky definitely means so much more to me.....I don't care how I feel or if I need to take medicine for the rest of my life...he is like my own child & I absolutely love him. Best of luck to you & your fiance! Let us know if you guys do get a Yorkie!!! |
I do hate to say this ... my friend has always been allergic to dogs, and she is just as allergic to my yorkies as she is to any fur shedding dog. Its sad. :( I don't know what exactly she is allergic to either, dander maybe? Whether my dogs are freshly groomed or dirty or my house is freshly cleaned or dirty... she is allergic either way. She can't stay in my house for more than 30 mins at a time without having to take something like claritin or benedryl. |
My Husband Has Serious Allergies My husband is seriously allergic to almost everything, specifically Dogs and Cats. He knew I wanted a Yorkie so bad..he agreed to give it a shot and with the help of his allergist, we are happy to say that we can live with our Yorkie without causing my husband serious allergy problems. We are able to do this by bathing our Yorkie once a week, we have 2 HEPA air Filters in the house, one in the bedroom and one in our living room where we spend most of our time in. We also have allergen pillow covers and we vaccum often with a HEPA vacuum cleaner. My husband also goes to the Doc weekly to get allergy shots. It has been a blessing to be able to have our little one at home despite my husband's allergies. My husband is able to sleep, hold and play with our Yorkie without issues. Only time my husband gets reactions is when our little one gives him kisses. My husband immediately gets numb in the spot. My husband doesn't mind...he loves kisses from our baby. :) |
I think it really just depends on the person. I have horrid allergies, I can't be around most cats and dogs or I'm wheezing, eyes are itching, sneezing and nose is running. I chanced it though and got Lilly. She doesn't bother me at all. I snuggle in her fur, give her kisses, let her give me kisses and I'm 100% fine. However, if I pet my mom's cat or anything, it kills me. Lilly does bother my mom's allergies a bit though. My mom has EXTREME allergies though, she can't wear hardly any make-up and she's allergic to several other things. I think I just lucked out and Lilly was meant especially for me. |
