isn't it SO hard? I guess it depends on if you want a puppy now or if you want to wait. Our breeder didn't do "genetic" testing but all her females and males are tested for LP and liver shunt. Layla also came with a health contract. I put a deposit down on a puppy before the litter was even born and I was very lucky to get a pick from 3 girls. I also think it depends on how comfortable you feel with the breeder- I'm sure whatever choice you make you will be happy! Just because a dog has been genetically tested doens't mean health issues won't come up :) Let us know what way you go! |
I think it is very hard on breeders who want to help those of us looking for pups - i would not expect a breeder to hold a pup for me without a deposit. Keep your chin up - it will work out. |

I agree, its just that the deposits are not refundable. |

sugar's mom has made excellent points and i think it is also important to see the issue from the breeders side :) with mine, i did not feel any pressure (rather i felt a connection ;) ) and all were old enough to come to their forever homes when i made the decision and paid the deposit ... this is just me but i would never put a deposit on a very young or newborn pup or one that is not born yet because i want to see how they will look AND i want to know what their personalities are developing into :D it is a hard decision, but i agree with the others - i think you will just KNOW when the right baby comes along....i think any second thoughts or wavering is a sign...JMO though ;) |
I looked at only a few puppies before I chose Kingston. I chose him because the second I saw him I just knew it was right, not just looks but personality. Also I really like his breeder, she was open and honest. No matter how much you want a puppy you have to trust the person you are buying it from. |

There were times when I did feel that pressure when I was looking for Chizziewink - and each time I started feeling that pressure I "slapped myself in the face, so to speak, came back to reality, and ran like the wind so I couldn't slap any $$ down. Any breeder who would play that game is NOT someone I would want to do business with. I have been in the situation of the seller and it makes me very uncomfortable when I have one person who is very interested in a pup and someone else comes along wanting the same pup. But then again, I don't try to market my babies to the general pulbic, I try to "place them" with perfect families. I tend to be a matchmaker :D |
(long sighhhhhh) I understand what you are all talking about. I understand wanting a healthy pup. I understand that there is a considerable financial responsibility. I understand all this. I ALSO understand that there are no guarantees in life. In my eyes, getting a puppy is very similar to adopting - or conceiving - a child. You have chosen to take in and care for another heartbeat, another little soul who needs you. Perfection is not always an option. At least with a puppy you have the option of choosing ... and whatever that puppy grows into doesn't really matter because it will love you unconditionally - even if you find fault with him or her. And why is it that you even *want* a dog? To be a perfect little arm-charm - or a loving companion? Do your homework as best you can. But ultimately, the decision is really in God's hands: ya pays yo' money and takes yo' chances. Just remember that that puppy will love YOU, regardless. I will now assume the "duck and cover" position ... |
