I learned today why you travel with your dog IN a crate! Layla and I were headed to the bank (what i THOUGHT was the right bank.. wrong bank once i got there.... what a day) There is a highway that runs north south but there are lights so that the east/west traffic can cross- and its not REALLY a high way- the speed limit is 90 km/hr.. but fast enough. Usually you never get the light (i'm travelling east west wanting to cross this highway) so you have to sit for a bit at a red waiting for it to turn however, today as I was appoaching it turned green- bonus! so i hadn't slowed down and kept right on going- well so did a school bus that was travelling north south on this highway. I had to slam the breaks on or otherwise we would have been destroyed by the bus- and THANK GOD i had Layla IN her crate buckled in- otherwise- she woudl have gone flying. We came very close to being hit by a school bus travelling quite fast- and had we been hit- I know she would have been in much better condition because she was in her crate and her crate was buckled in. I'm still so shaken up because we just came SO close- but Lay's fine :) I know when we travel with our dogs on our laps we think nothing will happen but people drive through red lights every day and sadly- if both Layla and I are horribly hurt- the paramedics are going to fix me, before they fix her. Please consider next time you are in your car- buckle your babies in- because they ARE our babies. |
Oh my, I am sooo glad you guys are okay!! |
That is a very good reason to keep them in a crate! Thank goodness you are both safe and didn't get hit! |
marci, im so glad u both are fine.. thank god... every weekend i think the same thing when i have to travel to the b/f's house an hour away.. my heart is in my mouth.. you will be doing 60 mph and all of a sudden down to 30 in a second.. very scarey... i strap lexi into her car seat, she hates it.. the whole ride she is looking at me panting like crazy, drives me absolutely insane... she wont look out the window, just stares at me... very important to have them buckled in.... lexi loves to be with me on my lap.. as im a block away, i will tell her to come to my lap.. please be very careful.. it only takes a second... i worry about that all the time |
Whew, so glad that you and Layla are okay. I strap mine into the snoozer seats whenever we go out. |

Oh thank goodness you are both okay! I was worried for a minute when I clicked on the link that you'd had an accident! :( I don't like my girls to travel loose in the car either incase of an accident. |
What a scare! Thank goodness you are both alright.. I have sometimes sat Pixie on my lap in the car..although she is often sick..so its not the best idea...and if we braked suddenly I dread to think..she so little too she would certainly go flying! after your warning I won't be tempted to do it again.. |
Oh that is so scary. Thank God you both are ok. |
Yikes! We're so glad you're both okay. Great reminder for us all. Thanks! |
That is so scary Marci!! I always put the boys in their crates when I am driving, but am guilty of holding them on my lap when dh is driving. I am so glad you guys are alright! |
omg! i am so glad that you guys are ok. and thank you for posting this. i do travel with milu in my lap all the time when i drive, but now that you mention it, i have to agree that it's not a good idea to have her in my lap when i drive. i better go get milu her own seat belt. (that's what you mean right?) what's the best way to travel with them in the car? |

With Layla I put her in her crate sideways on the seat of the car- then i wrap the seat belt around the crate - above the ledge that connects the top to the bottom so the seat belt wont slip off and then i do up the seat belt. |
So glad that story had a happy ending! I was in a bad accident with my 8 week old toy poodle many years ago and was nervous driving with him after that. Don't know if they had car seats back then even. Tatum has had a car seat that sits on my Tahoe's center console ever since I've had her. I feel so much better having her buckled in. We buckle in, right? Every animal parent should give their dog that same protection too. |
wow how scary. I wouldnt want to use a "crate" (My preference) but I do use a car seat with them buckled in. |
I am so glad you and Layla are OK! I was just thinking about this very topic because I got into a major accident about 2 weeks ago after dropping Tucker off at home (a man from a side street came and turned into my lane of travel without looking) and then got rear-ended yesterday in the rental car I got because of my accident (I know, sitcom in the making). So, long story short, I agree--make sure to buckle in your babies! |
That is so scarey! I'm glad you are both all right. |
I agree. Crates are the best way to go. |
Your a good momma Marci ;) Crate is a good way to go. |
WOW Marci, how scary! I am so glad you both are ok!!! I'm glad Layla was in her crate-I'm sure she was freaked out too! |
im so glad you are both fine. Thats why i got the dog carseats. Before i got them i was a nervous wreck, holding them in my lap, while holding their leashes very tight and my mom drives kinda crazy so now i feel much better cause of their carseat. i reccommend it to everyone |
What a close call!! I'm so glad you both are okay! |
I am so glad you are both okay! Lexi is usually in her car seat, but I am guilty of having her out of it sometimes during short trips. Thanks for the reminder - anything can happen, no matter how far or close to home you are. |
I am so happy you are safe and nothing happened to you both!!! I was getting a manicure today and there was a bad car accident in front of the nail salon. One of the cars ended up on the GRASS and was TOTALED!!! Everyone wants to get their shopping done for Thanksgiving and get home. |
I'm really glad you and Layla are alright. I agree about the carseats and being buckled in....but you want to know something really strange. My husband is a state trooper and he tells me about the accidents he works. He said that all the accidents he's worked and animals that are in the car or truck are always fine. Sometimes they are in the seats and sometimes they are not. he's been on the patrol 21 years, so he's seen alot. I just wonder sometimes how they don't get hurt. He said the people go to the hospital and him or the wrecker driver will see about the dog getting to someone whether it's a family member or friend. I just find it odd and wanted to share. I'm guilty of riding Tyke in my lap to. He's just so scared and doesn't like riding. I'm thankful you were ok :) |
Another reason to put them in a crate :(I have two yorkies, Princess and Hoagie. Princess hates to ride, Hoagie loves to. I never used to leave without him and he always sat on the console. On Wed. I stopped to run an errand and Hoagie jumped out -- he NEVER does this! Anyway, I ran and yelled to catch him, as we were very close to a busy intersection. Well, I caught him, but had to dive to catch him. Needless to say, I am having surgery on my broken wrist in about an hour. If he ever gets to ride again, it will be in a crate! I am just grateful I got to him before he got to the intersection. I wouldn\'t be able to live with myself. :( |
I\'m so glad that you\'re both okay! We use crates when we\'re traveling because I feel that\'s the only way to keep them completely safe. I like that they have the protection of the crate, and I buckle the crates in. |
so glad to hear that both of you are ok |
Too close!!! Marci,Aiden and I our glad you and our little GE SB angel girl are both o.k. I need to purchase one. I have two pups that like to ride in car with me. Do you reccomend a site or name brand? I\'m going to look online right now. Hugs to you both!!! |
What a scare! I am so glad both of you are ok! You know those school bus drivers are crazy! They drive like maniacs! You are absolutely right, no dog should be on a lap, it is way too dangerous. That is why I have two car seats for my little one. |
