Distemper?.... Im taking my Daisy to her first Vet visit today, I was wondering if getting a Distemper shot is something that she needs. I don’t want to put her in any unnecessary discomfort. She is only 8 weeks old and a little fur ball of energy. I’ve heard many horror stories about Vaccinations and am a little leery about it. |
The isn't a "cure" for distemper...it's usually fatal and all completely preventable by an injection. Her discomfort is minor...I've had puppies who were completely unphased by injections and some who cried for a minute. Since she is small...I would have the vet administer her vaccines individually though. |
Get her the shot. I have seen dogs (usually puppies) die of distemper. It is a very ugly death. :animal-pa |
Yes she needs it but some people consider 8 weeks too young. If this were my pup they would get distemper, parvo, parainfluenza and hepatitis at 8, 12 and 16 weeks or 9, 13 and 17 weeks or 10, 14 and 18 weeks. The longer you wait, the higher the risk of her getting distemper but if you give it too soon, maternal antibodies will interfere and the vaccination is useless. |

:thumbup: Yes, and don't take he anywhere other dogs have been, except the vet in a carrier, until she's had all her shots. I've read of a few horror stories from owners who only let their dogs play in a park where at the time no other dogs were seen, but they still picked up illnesses. Dogs are attracted to other dog scents and will seek them out, making it really easy for them to catch things. I haven't read anything about the horrors of vaccines, only that you shouldn't overdo it. Also, don't give the rabies shot with the other shots, do it separately, this usually means a separate office visit, but some vets won't charge for that. |

My vet recommends it due to their size and sometimes puppies have a reaction to the rabies shot. Our vet doesn't charge an additional office visit fee for the second trip though. |
Cool, thank you. :) |
Thank you, Ill make sure she gets one. I did talk to the vet when I made the appointment and told him I dont want her getting them all at the same time. Thanks again for the help! :) |
That Rabies shot is harsh. My vet does this seperate.... |
Well I took Daisy to the vet yesterday, think I need to find a new one. I told him I did not want her to get the lepto or corona but he gave it to her anyway!!!!! I thought she was only getting the Distemper shot, but when I got home her shot record says she got Distemper-Hepatitis (CAV-2) Canine Parvovirus Parainfluenza Leptospirosis:thumbdown and Coronavirus:thumbdown Like I said yesterday she's only 8 weeks old and 2 1/2 lbs I thought she would be too young to get all of that. maybe im wrong, does distemper have all of them in it, or do they always mix everything together. She only got one shot thats why im so confused! also If she did get all of them, how long do I have to wait before I can take her out? I was told by the breeder not to let her go into any stores/park etc... until she got her first set of shots. I was up all night too worried about her, but she seems to be fine just a little tired. It was harder on me then it was on her lol she didnt make a sound or even move when they gave her the shot. Im so mad that he could just disregarded my wishes as far as the Lepto and Corona went!!!! |
You shouldn't take her to public places until she's completed ALL her vaccinations.....which means around 12 weeks or longer. If you have an area where you KNOW no other animals have been....or know the animals...like your own yard...that's fine. |
With Thanksgiving in a few days I wasnt sure if I could take her with me when I go and see my family. the bf's sister just got a new puppy and I wasnt sure if she could go with me when I went to see them. |

She needs to be considered totally unprotected against the diseases she just got vaccinated for because the maternal antibodies she did have, the vaccines interfered with them and she may not have very little protection until she gets 2 more sets of vaccines. Distemper, parvo and I think hepatitis and lepto can be given separately but most vets do combo shots (all in one). The one I'd get is DHPP (sometimes called DAPP). That is distemper, parvo, parainfluenza and hepatitis or adenovirus. The one your vet gave was probably DHLPP-C. I would not go back. |
