Eating own poop My new puppy "Krissy" will not stop eating her poop. It is so gross!!!!! If she has an accident in the house I have to hurry before she eats it. It is worse because she still has an upset tummy with the stress of the new home. We have only had her since Sunday. She is 9 weeks old. We try to tell her no and move her to another spot in the yard but she runs right back. It has to stop. We leave her in the bathroom while we are gone and it is gross to even think about it. |
I am a new yorkie momma too and my Maximus eats his poop too. My vet suggested putting meat tenderizer on his food as a home remedy and if that didn't work, she had some other stuff. For the most part he has stopped, but sometimes, depending on how playful he is, he still does it. I do feel like the older he gets, the better he is getting about not eating it, then again, it may be the tenderizer. lol My baby is 11 weeks old today. |
this is very common and mine did it too and i just have to catch him so he don't. they said meat tenderizer does work sometimes and feeding them pineapple. mine won't eat pineapple, but alot of people on here tried it and it worked. I don't have any other advice as just to be patient and try not to let it become a habit for them or they will always do it. hope this helped ;) |
Well, I take her to the vet to make sure she is not sick (worms). You might want to try putting pineapple in her food to discourage her from eating her poop. It is sad but true some of our babies eat poop. LOL |
put fresh pineapple in with their food, it will make their poop taste nasty! |
Is your girl getting proper nutrition? The more poorly digested the food, the better the poop tastes. Good luck. I've heard this is a tough habit to break. One of my friends pointed out that we might have trouble too if candy came out of our butts! |
Pineapple works !!!!! My shih tzu Leo had a big problem. I tried meat tenderizer, changing foods, and being actually militant about watching him poop (very creepy I know :D). I saw the pineapple trick about yorkies and I tried it on him and he hasn't eaten poop since. I am slowly weaning him off of the pineapple to hoping that he doesn't go back to it. |
There are a few reason why your Krissy is eating her poo...one of course is her diet...and the other could be a learned behavior...from what i understand the mother dog would eat the poo of the puppies in order to keep the den clean. If its the diet...you could change her diet gradually over time...or try the pineapple like every one who posted suggested. If its a learned behavior you might have a harder time. Every time she poos...watch her...and before she eats it...give her a correction and when she leaves the poo alone...treat her and give her praise. You may have to do this for a while until she gets it...But Yorkies are extremely intelligent so it may not take too much time until she gets....if all else fails...ask your vet. Good Luck |

I may try the meat tenderizer just because it is easier first. Not sure I can even find fresh pineapple right now, I haven;t seen any in awhile. Do you just put a few pieces in their food bowl or use it as treats? Will the canned pineapple not work? Last night she pooped in the bathroom and ate it all. I only know she did it because it left marks on the paper. It is really gross when she wants to kiss you and she stinks so bad. Does the stuff they sell in the pet stores work as well? Right now she is eating Royal Canine (I had never heard of it) because that is what she was being feed. She still has a nervous stomach and a little soft stool so I was waiting to switch her but am picking up another bag of dog food this weekend. |
We had this problem for a while. Switched food-to Chicken Soup for Puppy Lover's Soul-canned. Problem resolved. |
I'm not 100% sure on the food, as sometimes, they can be eating good quality foods and still do that. I know from experience..Some just do it and some don't. Both of my sons yorkies do(they're brother and sister), and they use the potty mouth tablets, and also give 2 bites of pineapple to them a day. That does seem to help. To the op, I know what you're going through, been there done that..Not pleasant, but, it's very common.. |
I have the potty mouth tablets but my baby doesn't like them. I try cutting them up but she just leaves them. I think I will try the pineapple. My other two babies a male, COCO 17mo, and a female, PEBBLES, 8mo, don't do it at all. I just got this new one last week, still trying to figure out if she is a true yorkie because my daughter is allergic to dogs. But she is 12weeks and she eats her poop. it's gross. My other two go in the backyard and always manage to find some kind of poop to eat but they don't eat their own. I will let you know how the pineapple works. Again will the canned kind work? thanks for the info :aimeeyork COCO :aimeeyork PEBBLES :aimeeyork TRIXIE |
Will canned pineapple work? :aimeeyork COCO :aimeeyork PEBBLES :aimeeyork TRIXIE :confused: |
I tried some fresh pineapple and Krissy will have nothing to do with it but I think it is more that she doesn't like to eat from our hands right now. I tried putting some in her bowl and that was a no go. We did try some of the tablets they sell and my husband got one down her in pieces. We did start putting hot sauce on it as soon as she goes and that has been great. Of course if we aren't right there to put it she will eat it. I am hoping everything together will work. I told my husband this maybe why she isn't eating a lot of dog food!:D |
I'm sooo worried about what my babies are eating and giving them healthy food and snacks and they are eating their poop !! yuck !! :aimeeyork COCO :aimeeyork PEBBLES :aimeeyork TRIXIE |

Meeko use to have this problem. He just started it one day when he was like 8 months old. I tried everything to get him to stop and nothing worked. Then I went home for the summer (I'm in college) and there was so much going on there with my parent's dog, my little brother and cousins always running around, and my grandparents living next door. He didn't have time to eat it, lol he had to hurry back so he didn't miss any of the fun. I think he use to eat it because he was bored. Since I'm back at school he hasn't started. I guess I'm not help tho but, sometimes it's nice to hear about people who've gotten past things. He just kinda grew out of it. I hear thats common too. So don't give up hope. I know how frustrating it can be. I felt like I was always brushing his teeth because he was eating poop. |
Thank you all for giving me these ideas. I was just about to ask this same question about eating poo. I caught my 3 1/2 month old Yorkie eating her poo. How disgusting. I go and brush her teeth and wipe her mouth. Just gross. But I am going to try the pineapple. You are saying to use fresh. Can you use like frozen or canned as well?? Just in case it not in for the season? Again thanks to you all for this information! |
another trick I feed Tex the high protein paste and he won't touch the poo with it. I stopped for a while and I noticed this new habit. So back to paste it is. |

Personally, getting Billi to eat any pineapple is a gamble. Some days she'll take it, others she won't. Yes, canned pineapple is fine, but strain and rinse the juice off of it first. I use meat tenderizer and it works great & it's cheap and easy. Sprinkle some on her food and she's good to go. I haven't caught her give more than a whiff of her poo since I started using it a few months back. Good luck! |
When I first got my pup, she ate her poop all the time. I gave frozen pineapple chunks cut up twice a day for six months. She finally broke the habit, took six months though! Good luck! My pup was from a puppy mill. Hence the poop eating. |
My little girl Reese eats her poop too. I am heading out to buy the pineapple chunks frozen. She is only 2.11 lbs. and 3 mos old. I had read to give them 2 chunks in the morning and 2 at nite. Is that going to be right for her size or should I start with 1 chunk in the a.m. And 1 in p.m..? |

I used the frozen chunk pineapple and cut them up. Like a popscicle for them. Took my pup till about 9 months to stop eating her poo.. Now she trys eating the other three dogs I have at homes poo. Now I try feeding them all pineapple! Pain in the butt! But it does work! |
Well since we are on the subject. Hannah will eat everyone's poop. She even loves the cat poop. I stopped walking her in the grass because that's all she does is eat poop. I'm sure if she had the chance she would eat the horse and cow and goat poop. Why not..my other dogs do. I am going to see what Petsmart has today cause I like poop free kisses. She's on RC kibble & can and I wasn't planning on changing her food again. |
