Are dogs born as "cuddle bugs"? I was wondering if anyone knows if dogs are just born as "cuddle bugs" or if you can turn them into "cuddle bugs"? Do their personalities change as they grow? Can their environment change their responses to being held? I want a "cuddle bug" to snuggle with but "Widget" just wants to play. Will he change as he grows or are puppy's born snugglers? He's a 5 month old Yorkie. |
Some are born like that and some grow into it. My Jewels has always been since she was a pup. Chachi liked to run and play as a pup but now as an adult he is cuddly. Jewels is more so though, she lives to cuddle |
Im new and don’t have my Yorkie yet. And I am defiantly not as experienced as most people when it comes to raising a Yorkie. But I believe Puppies are like children. They are not born a certain way. Yorkies are like every other puppy (but much more special :)) they have a mind of their own. And the way the act when they get older pretty much reflects the way they grew up. For example if you were to leave your puppy alone most of the time and never give him/her the proper love and affection it needs, they will end up very miserable and withdrawn socially among other problems. Or if you continuously play rough with your puppy, let him/her bite your hand/feet etc…they will grow up thinking its okay. It may be cute when there young, but not so much once there older. I hope I helped a little. But like I said before im not an experienced Yorkie owner yet, just my personal opinion. |
Let me throw in....some never "grow into it". Ramsey has never been a cuddler and at 3 years old...still isn't. She will sit/lay beside you and shows her affection with kisses....but it's limited to that. Reese and Reggie are my cuddle bugs....and Reggie the ultimate cuddle bug baby. |
Some are born that way, some grow into it, some never do. Annie was always a snuggler. Boo has always loved to snuggle. If you aren't sitting or laying correctly he will poke and prod until you move so that he can snuggle with you. Gracie not so much, very independent as a little girl. She's 10 months old now and is getting more and more snugly as she gets older. Mostly since she was spayed and her pesky little brother has come to live with us. :p Yogi, from day one has loved to snuggle. |
Brownie decided at almost 7 years old that he loves the lap. |
snuggler or not Thanks for all the thoughts. Widget will snuggle up to me when it is bed time otherwise just wants to play. Maybe as he gets older (and I don't want this to be rushed) he will like to be held. At bed time (he sleeps with me and his sisters) he has to be touching me. Either his head on my neck or shoulder but other times just wants you to throw the toy again and again and again. |

My Ollie is a cuddle wh*re. :D Unless he has a case of the zoomies (which he does get, occasionally, especially if I tease him with a crumpled paper sack or his toy mouse) he is perpetually slung across my lap and has been since the first day I got him. |

Chester was a cuddle bug from day one and he still is |
Cuddly or not? My cosmo has always been very independent. He has to be near me touching some part of my body, but he won't let me just snuggle and hug him. He'll let me get a quick little hug, then he's off. He only lets me hold and cuddle him when he is sick or hurt....just like a man....lol...but that's okay because my black toy poodle, Onyx is my cuddle bug. He literally purrs like a cat when I snuggle him....Aren't we so lucky to have dogs in our lives? |
Bailey never wanted to cuddle just play play play, i couldnt eve pick him up without him wanting to be put down. We have just moved house a few months ago and wow he is now a right little cuddle muffin, he is never off me giving me licks and cuddles :) |
My Jewels has always been cuddly. Chachi has always been independent more especially so when he was a pup. He also favored my Husband. One day I just started picking him up (all 11 lbs of him) and talking sweetly to him. I just kept it up and now he comes to me and he wants to cuddle. |
Raindrop still likes to snuggle and cuddle, she just turned 1 this month, while Rocky (6yrs old) will snuggle when HE wants to. Rosie is 2 1/2 years old, and she is getting to be a real snuggler too. Romeo is the Yorkie/Poo and he likes to snuggle with my little girl, Jackie. Candy is the dachshund, and likes to sleep by me, and lay by me on the couch. Other than that, she is in her little bed. She is 10 years old now. :D |
Pao likes to cuddle now. He is 2.5 years old but when he was a puppy, he was too busy to cuddle. |
Teddi has always liked to cuddle....I don't think she has changed in that at all. |
Ranger is 1 year and a half and only cuddles when he's tired or doesn't feel good. I always get worried when he wants to cuddle for no reason!! Ryder on the other hand will literally use all of his tiny little body to push and shove me to where he can be jammed up as close to my body as possible. I just love it!! |
When do you know if they are a cuddler or not? Is a waiting thing? Hannah is independent. She'll let me cuddle her maybe once a day. The rest of the time she bouncing like a ball. She's four months old. |

Suzi likes to be with me all the time, she loves the attention . And is a people person. I think it is the temperment of the dog... Not all are going to be cuddlers, and some will want to when older. It is amazing how different these little guys are! :aimeeyork |
They come with their own personalities My two are as different as night and day My Mike ... will let you hold him touch him squeeze him He'll sleep for hours on your lap My Zach? .... he'll let you pet him and hold him and he'll come to you for affection but he doesn't like to be held for long Busy busy busy  |
dogs are all different. just like others said. though in general puppies are more active than when they grow into adult dogs. my girl Dolly used to be a tomboy when she was a puppy, chasing and barking nonstop. and now she is as snuggly as it can be, and thats all she does all day long! |
Born as cuddle bugs? I believe that some of them are. Jack does not want to be held but wants to be as close to you as possible. Rocky wants to be smothered. Maggie wants daddy. Sunnie wants everyone to pay attention to her & don't stop rubbing her back. When I was a kid the only dog that we had that wanted to cuddle was our StBernard, Barney. He was a lap dog and was the happiest if my mom would run the sweeper over his belly and back to brush him. He loved it when we would all lay on the floor with him. |
Baxter only cuddles when hurt or tired. ie when the yellowjacket stung him he was all about wanting his mama. He's one now and has to be able to see me but he does not necessarily want to be touched by me. he follows my every step but if I try to pick him up he takes off running. It is very weird. |
When I first got Juicy she wasnt really the cuddle type but a couple of months went by and she is the ultimate cuddle bug. :) |
