Another silky vs yorkie question Hi everyone! This is my first time posting here. I've got a rescue dog at my house that I will probably be adopting. She came to me as a yorkie, but I'm not positive that she isn't a silky instead. She is bigger (not sure exactly, but probably about 12 lbs) but we were at the dog park Sunday and there was another yorkie there even bigger than she is. She doesn't really look like an australian terrier, which is what I was thinking of when I came across the silky on the internet. Anyway, is there any real way to tell, other than by just comparing appearance? I'm at work now, but later I'll try to post some pictures of her so everyone can give their opinions. Thanks for your help, and I'm happy to be here! |
my parents have a silky and i have two yorkies -- they look very similar but my parents silky has a longer snout is how i can tell difference. |
I have a larger Yorker and I too thought perhaps he was a silky even though he has papers but he's not. He's all Yorkie. It's true the snout is longer. The silky's are cute but IMO the Yorkie has the cutier face. Either one you can't go wrong. They are both nice breeds. |
I am quite interested in seeing your baby. My baby also has me puzzled a bit. I have 2 yorkies and this 3rd one that I got about 3 days ago just looks different. She's cute as heck but I am curious if she is a yorkie or not. She was given to me by a friend of a friend and I was told that she is a pure yorkie but the woman delivered her to me rather then me going to her house. She got a clean bill of health at the vet and has started her 1st shot series. I just have a feeling that she is going to bigger than my other two. Her paws have really big pads and she seems long in the body. I don't know. I just don't want my daughter to be allergic to her as this is why I chose yorkies in the first place. :aimeeyork COCO :aimeeyork PEBBLES :aimeeyork TRIXIE |
Hello and Welcome to YorkieTalk! :) Looking forward to seeing pictures.... |
Okay, I'll try to post pictures: Kayla: http://i37.tinypic.com/21ki51w.jpg Kayla laying in my bed: http://i36.tinypic.com/flvlnl.jpg Kayla at the dog park: http://i38.tinypic.com/dg591i.jpg Here she is with my chi mix, Ella. Ella is about 11 pounds, just for comparison. http://i37.tinypic.com/makpiq.jpg Okay, I hope these all work! I think the thing that made me start to wonder about her "yorkiness" was not her large size, but her facial features. She reminds me of a bigger, sturdier terrier in the face, like a cairn, with the longer nose. But, she was a puppy mill rescue, and I sort of think that their records would probably be right. But of course I don't know exactly how that all works, and I haven't really seen any official paperwork on her yet. So what does everyone think? Yorkie or silky? |

I just looked at a picture of a Silky online and he also looks just like my baby. I can't tell the difference...hehe:p |
She looks like a larger yorkie to me. My Chachi is 11 lbs |

Silkies, too, are a hypoallergenic breed. So I think you're safe either way. My dog is part silky and her snout is longer, too, and I think she looks more foxish. In fact, my neighbor even calls her "foxy!" But in many ways she looks just like a yorkie. It's hard to tell a breed just by the appearance since there are variations within each. |
Wow, I really thought alot of people would say she looks like a silky, but it looks like I was wrong! Her face just looks more like a silky to me, but you guys are the experts! |
I keep wondering if my baby is a silky. She weighs 14lbs, and has quite a long snout. I love her anyway, but she is quite heavy after carrying her around the shops for half an hour!! :D |

Looks yorkie to me. My Preston is a bigger boy, and looks an awful lot like Kayla except for Preston's ears are up. My daughter has a silky, and to me they are more "squared off" looking. Not sure how to say it, but where Preston is all rounded, Keebler looks more "squared" His nose is longer and broader across. |
a real yorkie vs. silky I just finished drying my tears and bandaging my fingers. Five months ago I took a 4year old male Silky into my home after his owner died of cancer, a promise I made because the man's main worry was his dog and knowing the dog would have a home gave him a measure of peace. I also have a female Yorkie, 2 years old, and since I live alone she has been such a source of pleasure and happiness to me. The past five months they have gotten into 5 or 6 horrible snarling fights and tonight I ignored my vet's advice and intervened and got a good bite as a result. My vet said I should not attempt to break them apart while they're fighting because it is the way they establish who is top dog andthe past 2 or 3 fights I did walk away and they finally stopped and slowly made up, but tonight it seemed so vicious and I was so upset by it I paid the price for interfering. Any type of fighting has upset me all my life and animal fights are awful to hear and see. I read somewhere that these dogs will sometimes fight til one is dead and that is just terrible to contemplate. Right now if I could find a home for the Silky I think I'd let him go.............but I don't give anything up easily. Does anyone have any advice for me? |
4 Attachment(s) I have been told several times, by breeders as well as owners of both silkies and yorkies, and even my vet two weeks ago, that my lovely yorkie is really a silky. He looked way different than other yorkie puppies when I first got him, and even now he just looks... different. His hair is shorter and a little coarser than a silk haired yorkie (but not cottony, really) He weighs 13.5 lbs, his hair is really short, and his face is shaped differently. He was sold to me as a pure yorkie, but his breeder was really shady (I was so ignorant when I bought him) Here are pictures of him from when he was a puppy as well as current pictures. I hope they help figure out your baby: As a puppy: Attachment 254609 Attachment 254610 A little older: Attachment 254611 A recent hair cut: Attachment 254627 I hope that helps! |

I don't know why the pictures in my last reply turned out so small. Here is a picture taken last week of my Paddington (silky?) with my mom's purebred Yorkie, Diogi. You can kind of see the difference: http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b1...d/DSC_0080.jpg |
silky/yorkie/owner recovering Now that my bandaged hand has calmed down I can provide some insight relevant to my Silky and Yorkie fighters. They never fight over food, snacks or bones or even me. As IO lay on the couch Spelcheq curls up at my feet and rests his head on my feet and Sascha (she's smaller) curls up on my stomach and sometimes curls up down next to Spelcheq. They DO fight when Sascha snaps because Spelcheq is going to get out of the house in front of her when we leash walk and Spelcheq lets her know briefly he's not tolerating her behavior. If they're both aroused to barking at the squirrels outside, which race each other up and down a tree only 6 feet from our patio, Sascha jumps on Spelcheq for barking too close to her. Tonight I found out they fight when they both go after the same toy, which I threw for them. Never again............lesson learned. They've picked up on each's good qualities and though my Yorkie is paper trained in my apartment, Spelcheq refuses the paper and lets me know when he needs to be outside and now Sascha observes him and she also pees outdoors. They are such blessings in my life, they're fed well, have a great vet, both covered by VPI insurance, are groomed regularly and are happy go lucky dogs 98% of the time. Again, please, some advice on fighting. Do I ignore them and move away....do I blow a whistle..........spray water on them.........whatever it is I will do. I'm really afraid they'll hurt each other. To let you know how good they behave otherwise, when I go to church Sundays I'm gone for 3 hours and they never touch anything, including food and water. They resy on blankets on the back of the couch waiting for Mom. I love them both so much and would hate to break up a happy home. Please advise.: |

silky vs. yorkie I'm pretty new to this so I do not know how to start a new thread...but early today I followed some online advice and purchased citronella spray from Petsmart and an airhorn from Big 5......I had occasion to use the airhorn twice......they were just getting started barking at each other.......as a result this is the most peaceful day I've had in a while. Two short blasts and they stopped. Thanks for the new thread advice. |
Your baby looks like my boy Snitch. And i personally don't even bother with which breed should weight what, because my Snuggles is 16 lbs and all yorkie while Spyro is 9 lbs and he is a silky. |
You need to to my page and see my Tootie... they could be TWINS! WOW, they look so much alike... and he is all YT..... of course she is beautiful! d |
I was given my yorkie from a member of my family, he weighs 8.5 lbs and is super cute but want to know as well if he is a yorkie or a silky. I never got his papers and my relative has 2 other female yorkies which are considerably smaller. Can anyone tell which breed he is? |

I think...Yorkie. The size coloring and wavy hair look just like my Harley before I gave him his summer cut. See my album, he's a cutie and weighs 16.2 lbs. So much to love! |
Sure looks Yorkie to me. She is lovely. Beautiful coloring. |
1 Attachment(s) Ok, after reading this, I was hoping I could get some opinions on my Roscoe. I got him from a man that didn't want him anymore and have been trying to get his skin and hair in shape. He gave me some NKC papers, but I have never had a purebred dog and dont know if that is for sure or not. He weighs almost 10 punds. Could you guys take a look at the pics and tell me what you guys think? Thanks so much!:) |
