What other breeds can be Yorkie's best buddy? I am thinking about getting a playmate for my 6.5 pounds little girl (Yorkie of course). If I have done that a year ago, I would have gotten another Yorkie in a heartbeat. But I am always worried about her being step on (either by myself or somebody else) and I just can't be at ease. So I thought maybe I should get a larger breed. What breed do you think, or better yet know, would be good with Yorkie? I really want her to have some company when I am at work (I work 8 hours a day but I normally spend my lunch hour with her). Thank you in advance!:) |
My yorkie (Elaiyne) had an older poodle (Tanjhei) sister. They were 2 yrs apart and got along great. Inseparatable. But I also had a min pin (Jhenjer) at the time, the min pin was 1 yr older and my yorkie could not stand the min pin. They never played together. Everytime Jhenjer would try to play with Laiyne, Laiyne would put the toy down and just walk away from her. :( |

maltese and yorkies get along great |
Well, I don't think a Maltese would be any better if you want a larger breeds. I think any dog could be friends with a Yorkie, it just depends on the dog. The dog I am having a trial session with used to be best friends with a Pit Bull. If you are looking for a larger, but still small dog, you might consider an American Cocker Spaniel (English are bigger), Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Papillon (still smallish), any medium mix breed from a shelter, or pretty much any dog. I'm sure they can learn to get along if your dog is friendly with other dogs. I would get a larger dog, but less than 25 lbs, just so your Yorkie can play with it easily and not get overwhelmed. |
2 Attachment(s) Well Teddi's big sister is a Standard Poodle. They get along so great. Teddi bites at Cassie's feet to get Cassie to chase her. Teddi sleeps on top of Cassie or curled up beside her. Teddi loves to bring all her toys and line them up on Cassie's back. Here are some pics of Teddi and her big sister Cassie. |
I have 2 other dogs besides Mika, a Staff and an Old English Sheepdog. They all get along great, Mika sees Nikki (staff) as a mother figure I think and Owen (OESD) as her her bro and best bud! OESD's are known to be super gentle and he is so careful with even though he is over 100lbs he has never hurt her not even by accident! I have young kids and knew how gentle he was before I got Mika so I knew he would great! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/alb...ictureid=18804 There are more pic's of them together in my albums(I have 2 Mika albums) check 'em out! |
Any breed that I would suggest, you'd have to worry about that. I mean---a playmate that you leave alone with her during the day can't be bigger than her (dangerous). But, other breeds? My poodles get along with Izze very well. |

How about an english springer spaniel? Springers are generally calm and gentle so you wouldn't have to worry too much about your yorkie getting hurt in play time. My cousin used to raise them and out of the 5 she had, all of them were calm and gentle. |
I recommend a Mini Schnauzer. They are sweet and they don't shed. Sort of a medium sized dog. |
3 Attachment(s) Boo the Boxer has been the best of dogs all round...... Boo was already an adult and settled when Chattie came home and she has been the bestest big sisters a Yorkie would ever expect to have. |
I don't really think it's "breed" dependent as much as it is the personality. Every dog is an individual. Maybe try and rescue a medium sized mutt from the shelter or a rescue? |
