I think almost any dog would be good with a Yorkie. I have 3 Yorkies, 1 Yorkie/Poo and a miniature dachshund. All get along just great. All different ages. Dachsund is the oldest at 10years, Yorkie..6yrs., Yorkie...2yrs. Yorkie/Poo is 1yr/8mths and my youngest Yorkie 10months. What a crew at my house. ;) |

My Chinese Crested and Yorkie are best friends and even sleep in the same create together! They come in a range of sizes. Mine is 13" tall. Small enough to play with a 6lb Yorkie. |
I've helped raise two Golden Retrievers and I personally would not recommend Goldens as a breed to pair with a Yorkie. Their personalities are great and they're friendly with other dogs, but they have NO concept of their large size and they are very mouthy. Also, they are bred with a very, very strong instinct to carry dead small animals around in their mouth... It would not be an aggression issue, it would be sheer clumsiness. One of my parents' Goldens, Bella, accidentally broke my mother's foot after landing on it during an exuberant hoppy greeting. She's the size of a small lion and along with her brother Vito she is constantly jumping, rolling onto the ground, wrestling, and charging around tripping over small objects or her own big klutzy feet. They could easily hurt or kill a Yorkie by accident. If I were you, I would get a Bichon Frise. They're bigger, but not too big. My neighbors have a brace of them and they're lovely little dogs. Besides, there is no guarantee that a large dog will protect you in a street fight, anyway, unless you get a breed which is completely unsuitable to pair with your Yorkie. Carry mace instead. :D |
I vote for the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. They are the largest of the toy breeds and oh so soft in nature. Lovely wonderful dogs and priced somewhat like the yorkie.....not inexpensive for a good one that has had health testing which is important in that breed. :thumbup: |

I like them better than the tiny ones (I have a 5-6 lber and a 12lber) because they can hold their "potty" better. Less accidents. If you need help finding a good breeder, I can help. A downside to poodles is they require a good amount of grooming. And it is not easy to do yourself, although it can be done. I have to take mine to the groomer at least every 6 weeks---where with Izze I can take her every 4-6 months and I do the inbetweens easily. ETA: Bichons are very gentle, happy dogs and that is why I'd go with them over a westie. |

Fergie gets along well with most small dogs...she likes the larger ones too, but they are sometimes a little to rough on her...Her best playmate is her brother Deuce the Cat....he out weights her by 15lbs, but she doesn't cut him no slack. |

No, I am just saying I also love Golden but I wouldn't have a Golden. A Golden is way too energetic for a small Yorkie to handle not to mention its size. They are mellow when they are older but still way too active. I wouldn't risk that. Besides, it wouldn't fit our life style very well anyway - I am not active enough to keep up with a Golden. :) I just love them as a breed. I am still trying to figure out what would be the choice for my little girl. I think it's between Bichon and oversize Toy Poodle. |
