** Our 1st Week & I never imagined it would be this Crazy & 2 Attachment(s) SO FULL OF DIFFERENT EMOTIONS.. We just brought our baby home on Friday November 7th and I never knew owning a Yorkie would be this challenging yet rewarding at the same time! ** I want to start by saying this little guy has WON my  ! and the hearts of my whole family! ** So this is a recap my first week as a yorkie mommy with lots of worries and a leg injury ( he's fine no worries but it happened he jumped off the bed ) , I do hope you will read it entirely and offer some support if you can. On day 1 we had to leave him home alone all day because our daughter dances in the Bay Area and she has rehearsal every Saturday. I was already worried that he would be lonely and then while looking on the internet on the way to the bay area I found all kinds of articles on Hypoglycemia in yorkies.. TOTAL PANIC ... He was all alone in a strange place and I was sure he would have an attack. I enlisted my older daughter to go home and take care of him, give him Nutri-Cal, and watch over him. She did an excellent job when we got home he was happy and healthy! On or around Day 6 he started Hacking.. I panicked again after reading about collapsed tracheas, tonsilitis and strep! he had no vet yet and I was waiting for a call back from a pretty good one... but I had not gotten it at the time. So again I was extremely worried about him and hadn't found anywhere to take him, up watching over him and trying to figure out a pattern for the hacking etc. I then realized he had started doing it the first day he wore a hoodie, so I took the hoodie off and the hacking stopped .. I left it off for a couple days and put it back on and sure enough he was hacking a little.. ( I think it bothers him when it rubs around the neck when he is being held ) I still wanted to get him seen by the vet as I wanted to be sure he was OKAY. Now comes SUNDAY... My husband was holding him on the bed and playing with him, I went into the bathroom to blow dry my hair.. a couple of minutes go by and I hear my helpless little baby yelping like there is no tomorrow! I run into the room only to find out he'd jumped off the bed when hubby turned around for "2 seconds" WOW! I couldn't believe this was happening as I had WARNED EVERYONE TO KEEP AN EYE ON HIM he was very FRAGILE!!! How could he let my baby jump off the bed? what was he thinking? and worst of all had my baby broken his leg, or both legs.. does he have a head injury or neck injury (my bed is about 3 feet off the ground mind you ) so I put Gucci down and he appeared great until he tried to walk and instantly fell to the ground ... he is such a happy guy that he was still licking my face and wagging his little tail when I picked him up while whimpering at the same time :( .. I FELL APART and began crying like crazy! my husband was scared as well and felt so bad that he ever took his eye away, all he kept saying was I didn't know he would jump and I thought he was ok when I picked him up.. He held Gucci and told him he was so sorry and would NEVER take his eye off him again! I was in a panic, had no vet and no emergency vet open... so I did a little examination, stretched his little arm and applied pressure to see if he was feeling pain, but he never made a sound.. My brave lil man! He seemed to have NO broken bones, so I did all I could for the time being and put a mini splint on him and left him on bed rest all day in his little vinyl house. Around 10 p.m I opened the door and he came zipping out like a maniac running and trying to jump .. But I put a STOP to all that! I was determined to get him into a vet ASAP just for reassurance that he had no real problems I hadn't noticed or misdiagnosed since I AM NOT A VET. Which brings us to TODAY I got him an appt with the vet I had wanted! and They saw him at 3 p.m for a FULL EXAM and an EXAM of his little leg (front left one) the Vet did the whole range of motion test, watched him walk, run and leap and said he must have a Small soft tissue injury and that he is VERY LUCKY to not have broken anything because he is very little... he said he was a strong little guy and very healthy! So he is now on bed rest for 7 days... he's going to hate every second of it  lol.. but it has to be done. He also examined his lungs, lymphnodes adn everything and says he looks great so the hacking is most likely from the neck portion of the sweater bothering him. I FEEL LIKE A TERRIBLE MOMMY for letting him get hurt AND I HAD NO IDEA it was ever going to be this rough and that I could ever feel so helpless yet so overjoyed all at once. I would not trade this little guy for the world! but it has been a very long week and definately a learning experience! Does anyone have any advice or is basically a learn as you go process with these guys? I want to keep him SAFE always! I was a bit concerned as the vet said he was very little but he also said he's 3 lbs and slightly overweight.. is it because he's small but chubby? he is about 5.5 inches in height to the top of his head and 3 lbs.. very cobby and stout. Couldn't it just be the way he's built? Maybe short and thicker rather than short and frail? or is he TRUELY OVERWEIGHT? I have attached a pic below for an idea of his proportions Thanks to all who have read this and I will appreciate any and all responses!! THANK YOU FOR HAVING THIS BOARD!! |
Whew!! What a first week you have had with your new pup. So relieved to read that your little boy is fine and did not break any bones. I could not imagine how scared you were. Your poor hubby. I bet he learned just how quick these little can be. :congrats: on your new puppy!! What a cutie he is! |
Hehe what a cute little pie. congratulations on your puppy :) Not sure if he is chubby or not but you can always feel his ribcage. If he is too chubby, you wouldn't feel it at all but since he is a puppy and is still growing, I think it is fine to be a little chubby? I wouldn't worry about it at this stage. |
I hear you, the first day I got Phoebe I was crying too, I was like what I have done, I had cats for so long but this little furball is so hard:eek::p so active and crazy he,he and after a few weeks I was fine, I was so happy I found this site learn so much and so you will too, welcome to yt, your boy is sooo beautiful, congratulations:aimeeyork:thumbup::thumbup: |
kpstoybox - Thank you for the comment on my handsome, I was terrified that he was all broken when he fell and yes hubby learned very quickly and vows to never let his eyes off his little buddy again, he calls him his son lol.... I am just so relieved he is A okay! Potter - :embar: he may just be chubby then cause I don't feel too much there but fur and skin lol...he only eats 1/4 cup of Eukanuba Small Breed puppy food 2 X's daily is that too much? I love my baby no matter what I just want to make sure I am doing right by him Panama69 - Thank you for the welcome and comments on my lil Gucci ! I was exactly the same way the first couple of days .. things are calming down now that I know he's ok but I am still very careful about everything I do with him and as you already know , it will probably be like that for a while ..I am just so glad I found this place! |

Wow that's quite a week. Glad you all survived. These babies can jump so quickly. What i do is I have ramps next to each bed and stairs or stools next to their window seat and the couch. With each one when I go them I spent an hour showing them how to go up and down. They learned right away to only use the ramp or stairs. Even when they get really excited they all run down the ramp. I also make sure when I am carrying them that I have a tight grip, my one Cali will just try and leap out of your arms. Once when I was telling the neghbor kids that they had to sit down and hold Cali who was 9 weeks at the time, she took a noxe dive right out of my arms and I was standing up, I felt terrible, thankfully we were on the grass and she was ok. So don't feel like a bad Mom, we have all had these moments. |
A ramp or stairs sounds like something I need to look into for my little Gucci, he needs to be able to move around without me hawking over him lol.. I will if I have to but I doubt he'd like it much. Where did you purchase them? are they available anywhere or mostly online? Thanks! |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk, I too have only had my baby a month, your week was a very emotional one to say the least. So glad he is doing better and he is as cute as can be!:) |
thank you it's good to know there are others that are experiencing the same thing that I am, or have experienced it before! If you don't mind, how old is your new baby? |
He is sooo cute! Im glad he is ok and didnt break any bones. I stayed panicky when mine were babies but now that they are grown i dont worry as much. My youngest turned 1 yesterday.:welcome4::happythx: |

Welcome to YT, and faster your seat belt:). You are in for the ride of your life with Yorkie puppy behavior. |
That happened to me as well,Jamie jumped right out of my arms off the couch ,onto his box and then the floor,I had a huge panic session and rushed off to the vet and he turned out to be fine. They have their own minds so you have to be extra careful there is no taking your eye off them. They do silly things and think they are superdogs.I found it better if I cannot keep an eye on him especially when they are in the first 6 months to put them in their area, crate or wherever you have designated your puppy safe zone. The first few weeks are always scary but fun at the same time. You will get into a routine and things will become easier.Welcome and please know you will always have lots of help and advice here at YT. hugs and kisses to your precious baby |
I too went through the same thing. Not too long after I got Max, we were laying on the couch until the phone rang. I got up to answer it forgetting that he follows me everywhere I go which led him jumping off the couch. He landed straight on his stomach and it took his breath away. I felt so bad that I couldn't let go of him and just hugged & hugged him. They are very challenging and I think sometimes they think they are bigger dogs than what they are, but actually it's their ego!! Max has no fear which scares me to death. Your baby is gorgeous and he sure is lucky to have a great Momma like you! Isn't it funny how they bring out the mother instinct back out of us? |
He is so adorable . |
Aw, what a cutie! I'm not sure if he's overweight or not, but my parents have a yorkie that has a more "stout" build. And she just always appears to be chunky. :) And don't feel like a bad mommy! It's obvious you care for him so much...accidents happen. When Miles was little, I took him to Target with me. I had my hands full in the parking lot, and set him on a lawn chair I had just bought...I just needed to get some stuff into the car. I took my eye off him for LITERALLY one second, and he freaked out and fell off...onto the hard surface of a parking lot. I felt so so so so bad. He was fine, thank goodness, but I made about a million calls to the vet that day. Just keep doing what you're doing. The first couple weeks are a LOT of work with the potty training, sleep deprivation, etc. But the more work you put in now, the sooner it will get easier. I think in a couple weeks you'll find that you feel normal again. :) |
yorkiemomto4 - thank you for the comment on him and thank goodness he didn't break anything .. that is exactly how I felt Bildio - It is very possible, he has been called Cobby .. I am new to Yorkies so I am not TOO Familiar with the term, I have just gathered that it isn't a bad thing :) ...How much does your baby weigh and what is he like, is he small but stocky making him weigh more and appear somewhat chunky? Lindsay - I agree, anytime I cannot keep an eye on him he is in his little vinyl house and that is exactly where he was before hubby decided he was going to spend some time with him and then it happened.. But I think hubby has learned a most valuable lesson with this whole thing, and I am so grateful my baby isn't injured. Mikilynn - My little Gucci seems to think he is superman as well and made of concrete, he tries for the craziest things and is definately a daredevil so I am always on him like a hawk... lol and Thank you for the kind words! I am trying to be the best momma I can be for him .. he has definately brought out that motherly instinct in me .. My girls are 10 and 13 so it has been a while since I have had to watch over them every second. Diego - Thank you so very much! MilesDavis - I think he may be just that "short and stout" lol like a little mini teapot haha .. Sorry to hear about your scare I am sure you were panicking! It is not a good feeling... I am just glad that part is all over and he is ok. I am already starting to feel a little more comfortable with all the support from everyone here, so THANK YOU SO MUCH! |
it will get better, I promise. more of the fun part and less of the pain and worries, it just takes some getting use to, for him and for your family. I've had similar experience when I first got my girl Dolly, even though she was already 8 months old at the time. within the first week, she jumped out of the bath tub when I was giving her a bath and turned around for two sec and she jumped out and broke her leg. she was not as lucky as your boy, not only she broke the leg, the bone was misplaced too. so she had to have surgery the very next day. the vet corrected the bone and put a pin in there to keep the bone in place. she had to wear a cast on her leg for 4 weeks. and after the bone had healed, the vet had to do another surgery to take the pin out. so, you should be happy at least nothing that serious happened. just be careful and you and hubby will get use to having a little bit around in no time. and your boy is such a cutie and he does look sturdy even though he is small! wish you and your boy all the best! |
How big is Buddy/ SOOOOOOOOOO Big - YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Community Now this is chubby! I couldn't resist this. Congrautlations on your new adorable furbaby. You sure had a stressful week with your new little guy. I am glad he did not get injured from jumping off the bed. Each week will present more challenges but that's normal. Have fun and good luck with this little guy. I look forward to watching him grow up on YT. Enjoy. Welcome to YT. |
Omg Welcome to owning a Yorkie!!! That was bootcamp. Now the fun begins..You're doing fine. They are just like children...full of energy, afraid of nothing and into everything. Just take a deep breath and enjoy him. He'll make you laugh, cry, worry, smile, and you'll want another one...I'll bet on it. He's so freakin cute, I teared up when I saw his picture. He has a great bod...tell the vet to chill. Baby are chubby,he's healthy right? I want to see more pictures soon. Watch how fast they grow. Aiden went from 3 lbs to 5 to 8 to 12 and now I have to bring my Harley in for his first shots and I'm bringing Aiden along..he's 9 mo old and I know he is about 15 lbs. CRAZY.. |
YOur little guy is so cute. Mine has jumped off the bed and we've laid on them. They keep loving us. I am glad he is not hurt very bad. Just one thing for you to think of if he is somewhat quiet. We took our first 2-3 babies in small purses to carriers with us every where. We even took them to church, restaurants, movies. I folded up a pee pad and if they started to get ancy I put them on the pad at the movies, in the restroom at the restaurant. No one ever knew I had them with us until we started showing people what we had in the bag. We had to share they were too cute. If they started yelping at all we took turns coughing until we could get them a snack or a drink of water. It was quite a performance. I have had 2 yorkies get a cough from sleeping on my chest with a fan blowing on me. It took for ever for them to get over it. I know exactly how you feel. My bed is 4 feet off the floor, I bought the steps and it barely reaches. I couldn't find steps that had 4-5 on them till now. I don't have enought room for them because those steps are too big. I have to be very careful or mine jump off my bed anytime to almost everytime I put them on my bed. |
You're little one is precious! Don't worry about being a bad mommy, we've all been there. They are so quick. Maggie is just 6 mos old and was jumping off the back of our sofa!!! I think it is about 40". She is all of 3 lbs today so she was much smaller when she was doing this.:eek: Talk about scary. I have tons of pillows around the sofa so they can catapult up and jump down from the sofa. A friend of mine lost their dog and gave me their supplies which included a set of steps. It is just the right height of the sofa and they took to it right away. The have the same steps at Walgreens for 10.00 and at CVS also. We've never had them on the bed though. Could your little guy just have puppy weight on him? Maggie was a little round for her size but she has grown taller and thinned out over the past month and half. Sounds like your guy may just have a cobby shape to him. Maggie is now about 8 inches. |
I just wanted to welcome you to YT. You have deffinately picked the right place to come to to talk about your baby. The people here are so NICE and we all have something in common, our babies. I'm glad you've made it through the first few weeks and there will be many more obstacles to cross along the way to the 1st year. You learn as you go and you will fall more in love with each passing day. One minute he will make you mad and then in the very next minute your over it and loving them. It's a up and down thing all the time, mostly up.... Good luck and again welcome to YT.... :aimeeyork :) |
Yea, when they are little you have to take care of them like babies. I have a tall bed as well, but now that my baby is 3 he can jump on and off. When he was little he ran across the parking lot and ran head first into the curb, flipped in the air and started yelping.LOL.. Then once he jumped out the truck when he wasn't supposed to and landed on his head. That was the scariest. He cried and cried, but he was okay. He is not 3 yrs old and when I hold him I hold him on my arm and my hand around his chest. I never let him leap from my arms. And he knows the stay command so he doesn't leap from the car anymore. With some time and training you should feel much better. You will have to doggie proof your house for at least a year or so. I crate and pen trained my baby so he had a safe place to stay when I was busy. Now he is old enough to have free roam of the house. Good Luck! :) |
oh your baby is soooo ADORABLE!!! I mean hes just a dollface! He does look like he's a little more stout but he does not look overweight to me. He kind of looks like a cross between my 2 boys! Kind of funny. He is built like my little guy but has the coloring of my bigger boy! Stress... yep. I can say I was a mess ... uummm.... at least 3 months when I first got my boys. They were soooo TINY! 2.2lbs and 1.8lbs when I brought them home. Luckily they slept most of the time away. Accidents happen though, its just not possible to keep both eyes fully on them all the time. Id keep him off the bed or couch completely for a few months just to be safe. I didnt let mine up until they were 4 months old. You are a great yorkie mommy. :) You had a great and rough week with your new baby... you both will adjust to each other and be fine! :) |
I remember our first few weeks. I remember thinking oh my gosh what have I gotten myself into when the breeder was going over everything from shaving the hair on her ears to making sure she eats enough because of her blood sugar and they are just so tiny. It's hard the first few weeks, but it gets better. I still worry about Fergie and she's almost 2. |
I'm so glad your puppy is okay. I think most of us can say we have been there. About three weeks after getting Sophie, my boyfriend was sitting on the floor playing with her, and he had her on the bed and she jumped off. Luckily, he has a very low bed and she was okay. Now, anyone holding her is stalked by me, I feel bad, but I don't move and I'm always there waiting to catch her since she has no concept of height. Your puppy is adorable and I'm a little envious, he seems to have a good build to him, he's not as delicate as my sophie. Best wishes to you and your puppy! I think sometimes they are tougher than we think they are. ;) |
OH girl, it gets better...Please dont worry. He is a kissable little guy....... |
He is ADORABLE!! I spent the first week after we got Emma crying...nonstop. I didn't think I could do it. I was watching her every step. Over-worrying. We even called the breeder to see if we could give her back. I was makin myself sick from the worrying. (i'm good now...lol) First time she jumped off the couch, I freaked. Bought some of the steps. She just chewed on them, tried to drag them off. Jumped OVER them to get down. So now, we've taken the feet/raiser things off the couch so it's sitting right on the floor. It's kinda hard for us to get up off it now....HAHA.....but the things we do for the babies! |
What a little sweetie you have. I'm so glad that there wasn't any serious injury with the bed jump. It's true these little fiesty pup's think they can do anything. I've had 2 mishaps with one of mine, my first one and they both had me reeling and wondering if I should own a yorkie at all. One accident I don't even know what happened but she broke one of her front legs. The other incident was while she was teethered to my belt loop in the back yard and one of my labs jumped for a toy I took and landed on her :( She was a wee one at 1.2lbs when both of these accidents happened and is still a very frail girl so I\'m more then careful all the time. But, you do get used to it |
