I've gotten it both ways. LOL "Oh is that a "silky"? and "is she a teacup"?. (Same dog) People are just not educated about yorkshire terriers that's all. I take it with a cup of salt. |
don't take it personally. some people are just uneducated about the breed and insensative about commenting. couple days ago. My mom and I took Dolly and my mom's chihuahua shopping with us. while most people loved my yorkie Dolly, they would start questioning about the chi like: is that a chi mix? why is she so much bigger than the yorkie? while I did not say anything in their faces, I was laughing hard at them inside. my mom's chi is pure bred and looks pure bred, and she is only 5lbs, just because my yorkie is only 2.8 lbs and standing next to the chi, that made her less of a chihuahua! |

I am probably going to have to endure a lot of "That's too big to be a purebred Yorkie!" comments. Ollie is over four pounds at 8 weeks old. :D He's not chubby either. He's just big. His mother was very small (about 4 lbs) and his father was very big (around 15 lbs). My vet must not see many large yorkies, because she mentioned that he was going to be a "big" dog several times during his first vet visit. 15-16 pounds is her excited estimation. She can't wait to see if he gets as big as she thinks he is! I agree though, that people should not be rude and all stores should allow dogs. :animal-pa |
Haha, I've gotten this so many times! I think I've just learned to brush it off. Both of mine are above standard, Maggie is 10lbs and Franklin is 13lbs. I took Maggie with me to a meeting on campus on Wednesday night. I literally JUST walked into the building when a guy came up to me and said "your Yorkie is big, mine is tiny" and walked on. No hello, no "is that a Yorkie?", nothing. Just judgment. I laughed and kept walking. I'm sure it's just the same for the opposite. That lady was probably feeling insecure that her Yorkie was larger than yours. ) |

sorry that lady was rude like that in front of you =/ some ppl! but its kind of funny that she would say that only BECAUSE i too have a 15 lb yorkie, odie, and i always thought HE was the differentone for being so big! i assumed yorkies should be small dogs and i always get the other end of the "bashing" so-to-speak...ppl saying omg your yorkie is so big...why?! i just say its because he has such a big heart =] |
How rude! I really dont understand all the fuss over size - of course a yorkie should be within the standard size for showing/breeding, but for a pet and companion does it matter? Twinkle's parents were within the breed standard size-wise, but Twinkle is already 8lb at not quite 6 months and I really couldnt care less. Surely an 8lb dog is tiny in anyones book?! xx |
For over 40 years I have had comments made or quesrions asked about what kind of dog, or isn't it big or such. My answer to "what kind is it?" I lean over and whisper "He really is a Yorkie. We don't dare tell him he is not a Rottweiler, though, so we let hime think he is" Always with a grin on my face. About the size, I say "Just could not get him to read the part about weight in that damn breed standard book so he kept growing to catch up with the neighbor's dog". Usually, I get a HUUMPH and they walk away. A friend in Australia has a saying "It matters not a twit the looks, as long as you love the dog!" That is my philosophy. too.. |
