**Concerned** is hacking normal? My pup has started a Hacking noise the last few days, it started as maybe 1 small episode the first day lasting about 5 seconds.. the second day it lasted about 5 seconds as well but he had about 2 episodes and today he did it 2 - 3 times and one of the episodes lasted about 20 seconds I even took him out of his little house he was napping in and turned him upside down a little thinking he was choking on something. He is NOT left unattended nor does he have any free reign of our home, so I don't think he has anything stuck in his throat, this is just really worrying me as it doesn't sound exactly *normal* .. however, I have never owned a yorkie or any toy breed so I don't know if many of them do this or not. It's a hacking sound or wheezing sound maybe? Anyone know what this could be or experienced this before... am I overreacting? |
** Just forgot to mention that he looks like is Dry heaving almost but without the motion of the stomach when a pup or dog is going to vomit... he starts out doing it just a bit and then ends standing up in that dry heave type position.... |
oh poor sweet boy - sounds to me like kennel cough- i'd go to the vet- it's like a cold and can develop into pneumonia. Layla had it- he will be on meds which will just keep it from becoming pneumonia and otherwise it just has to run its course. I found with Layla a hot air humidifier worked for Layla but keep in mind just because he might go on meds- doesnt' mean the coughing will go away- Layla's lasted over a month- but i'd make a vet appointment and see what's up. |
I too would have the vet check for kennel cough. if it's not that maybe he is having an episode of reverse sneezing which they get from time to time and nothing to worry about. Keep us posted. |

I agree. It sounds like kennel cough. You need to take him to your vet asap before it gets worse. Kennel Cough In Dogs, Explained in ThePetCenter.com |
I had called a vet, they said to rub the larynx if he coughs it is most likely kennel cough, so I did that and got no response  go figure.... he is not doing it excessively but i did notice he did it while he was asleep earlier , it woke him from his nap and only lasted briefly. My biggest concern was tracheal collapse, is this possible in a 9 week old? another concern was my daughter had strep 2 weeks ago, he has been with us for 1 week and she was all better when he came but could he have gotten it anyway? maybe by licking something of hers? One more thing, can he still get his vaccination tomorrow (2nd one) ? is that ok if he does have kennel cough? he is going to go to the vet mid-week.. I just have to find a good one, as he doesn't have one yet .... ** Also it DOES NOT get worse with activity, it seems pretty random ** Thank you all for being so kind!! and patient with me and my concerns .. |
It sounds to me more like reverse sneezing, in which case you shouldn't worry, but have the vet check if you're not sure. :) |

I would not vaccinate a sick dog/puppy until they are better. If it's not kennel cough, it could be allergies...Have you purchased anything new lately? New cleaners, new blankets, clothes, etc? |
I had 2 like that and it turned out tonsilitis. |
DO NOT get his shots if it IS kennel cough- if it is reverse sneezing then it's ok to get the shots. |
No vaccines if he is sick, but you should keep your appointment and have the vet examine him. Kennel cough is very common in puppies. |
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE THAT HAS RESPONDED... now here is the dillema, I was going to take him today to the little mobile pet clinic at a boutique pet store we have in town, that does this puppy package and gives him heartworm prevention, vaccines and roundworm treatment etc. He DOES NOT have a vet to go to yet as I have not been able to find one that has a good reputation ( I do have 1 in mind but he hasn't gotten back to me as of yet on if he will take him or not ) anyhow do I vaccinate him or leave him be until he can get an appointment? which will probably be Wed or Thursday sometime. I am not even sure if he is sick he doesn't seem like he is, but the noise was worrying me... He has not done the hacking thing again since last night around 9:00 maybe 9:30 and he is not sounding sick when he breathes nor is he sneezing or anything like that.. he acts as his normal crazy self and is eating and drinking fine, I just do not want to compromise him AT ALL... Thanks! |
I would absolutely not vaccinate him until a vet examines him. While those mobile clinic may be good for boosters for adult dogs, a new puppy needs to be seen by a vet IMO. |
