How did you convince spouse?

Let's hear your stories. How did you convince your spouse to agree to adding a new fur baby to the family?

6 months ago I started casually mentioning getting a dog, and hubby was completely against it. He was concerned about chewing furniture and extra messes, since he does most of the cleaning.

Then a couple months ago, I told hubby that we really should get 2 dogs, so they could keep each other entertained while we're at work.

Somehow, as soon as the idea of 2 dogs came up, a panic alarm went off in his brain. All of the sudden, he caved in "Okay, okay, we can get one, but only one."

Of course, I'm secretly hoping to get another one in a few months once London settles in. (I'll post pics of London soon. She's coming home with me tomorrow. Counting down the hours now!) :D

LuvtheCooper 11-14-2008 10:08 AM

Congrats on getting London tomorrow!! Sounds like when you get ready for the new one...you just have to say you are getting two more...it worked the first time, didn't it??:D

chachi 11-14-2008 10:09 AM

I had to convince my Husband to get the first one but it was his idea to get the second one and we got her a month after we got our first one. My breeder was thrilled she said she thinks they do better in pairs. My two are very close yet they are also very affectionate towards us.

Bellas_mommy 11-14-2008 10:16 AM

I'm not married yet...but my boyfriend and I might as well be. lol

I have always wanted a puppy, but my parents were always opposed because we have white carpet throughout the vast majority of our house. So he always knew that we would have a little one at some point. I kind of surprised him this summer when I bought my little angel while I was away working in Michigan. And as soon as he met her he absolutely fell in love. She is a daddy's girl and she's got him completely wrapped around her little paw. They are adorable together. :)

And we're thinking about getting her a little sibling soon...his idea :)

MyPeanutAbbyGra 11-14-2008 10:19 AM

Maybe if you say you want 3 dogs, he'll say OK to 2! :D

abaddon248 11-14-2008 10:22 AM

for my seccond dog Max.. we went to a family friends home and the neighbor had puppies.. All i wanted to do was smell puppy breath..so the lady brought me over...and there was lil tiny boy with these blue eyes and I fell in love.... I walked over to my hubby in the other house with the puppy and looked at me with puppy dog eyes and said can we have em?? and it was the puppy that basically convinced him lol and the thought of having his own dog and actually being able to afford max

CupofDog 11-14-2008 10:23 AM

I just brought the second one home from the rescue facility and said, SURPRISE!
LOL.

He left me in August...so don't follow my advice! :thumbdown Well, OK, it didn't have to do with dogs, he was an alcoholic who refused to get help...he actually loved our dogs...anyway, make your case and wait until your first is potty trained. then the baby copies the first one!!

Having them keep one another company though is a huge, huge help!

pepper87 11-14-2008 10:31 AM

My boyfriend never had a pet in his whole life before Pepper, so it was a little tough to convince him. He really wanted to get a puppy chocolate labrador.
For our anniversary he bought me the yorkie and I bought him a turbo upgrade for his wannabe sports car. We made a bet that the dog would end up costing more than his car repairs over time. German cars have so many weird issues, I totally won that one! We don't even count how much she costs anymore because we could get rid of the car, but we could never get rid of our little girly.

BamaFan121s 11-14-2008 10:37 AM

Easy.

The first time around I said, I'm going to get a dog...I'll see you when I get home, make sure there is nothing in the floor when I get back.

The second time I said, "I'm going to pick up antoher dog Saturday...let me know if you decide you want to ride with me or if you want to stay home."

Lindsay1973 11-14-2008 10:47 AM

I tell him what I want and then talk about it incessantly until one day I get what I want. Our yorkie just had puppies and I knew I definately wanted to keep one,my dad was going to keep one and we would sell the other two.But Hubby decided we would keep all three all on his own (take your jaw off the ground really I had nothing to do with it).

Now that is the way it should be!! You go girl!!

I brought Daisy home on a "trial" basis (haha got him there) for a week, knowing full well she wasn't going anywhere after that week. He now loves her just as much as me.:D

Brodi mom 11-14-2008 11:58 AM

I guess we all do the same at times. I travel back and Forth to Wva for my 17 yr old daughter to see her dad and ride her horses when i come back home i tell him over the phone im bringing a baby home and then tell him Love you see ya in a little bit andwell by the time i get home he is over it..LOL

mkawczak 11-14-2008 12:03 PM

I took my cell phone captured a picture and shot a video of him whinning and playing...the rest is history. My husband said no pets when we started living together over 20 years ago..we've had 8 animals since.

JPop & Taz 2 11-14-2008 12:33 PM

Actually, my first yorkie was DH's idea. We were getting our married daughter a little female for Christmas and I was constantly checking on her through the breeder. About 2 weeks before time to pick her up, the breeder told me she was so sad, no one seemed to want the last baby, a little male. I told DH, not even thinking he would react the way he did, and he said, poor little guy, why don't we get him.:p JPop will be 5 years old this Sunday!:p The next 3 were pretty well mutual agreements, but, number 5 came as a complete shock to him; now he loves my Lil Deuce Coupe! DH's are such pushovers!!:animal36:animal36

YAY! congrats. I can't wait to see London's pics. Be sure to be extra vigilant about messes (it's so hard, lol) , but that might be the trick to getting #2 since your hubby does a lot of the cleaning.

LilMissy 11-14-2008 01:00 PM

At first my Dh wasn't thrilled about the idea of another dog. Then, he realized how important it was to me. All my life I've owned a dog. Last summer I had to put my bestfriend (a Lab cross) to sleep. It was the hardest thing that I've done in my life. Finally, 15 months later, I'm ready for a new pet. Dh just wants me to be happy, plus it's really no skin off his back. I do all the housework, and raising of pets and children.

WV~Yorkies 11-14-2008 01:03 PM

My husband bought my 4th one. I never asked and when he seen her that is all I heard is how I should go back and get her. I guess I am lucky.

Jacklynn 11-14-2008 01:25 PM

For our first one, I did all of the research and came to my husband with all of the information, and showed him a puppy I had found :). He eventually agreed. With our second Yorkie we had decided to wait until after we bought a house to bring home Wrigley a sister. Then we decided we would just wait until after Christmas.... then we found Rainer and the rest is history haha

silyjillie 11-14-2008 01:49 PM

Well I didn't have a hard time convincing my bf to let me get a dog because, well, we're not married and not living together. It took a little to get him use to the idea of it though. He was born and lived in India till he was 12 yrs old and in India animals don't stay inside houses and they don't have pets. It's not just dog or cats, its cows and other animals.

So, because he's never lived with pets and his neighbors never had pets, he was scared of animals. He came to meet my parents and meet their mini sschnauzer and was ok with him because, Chipper is very calm. Then my brother came by with his puppy pitbull and that was interesting lol :p It was very scared of Tank. lol So, after seeing Tank he was not happy when I mentioned wanting a puppy.

I looked around for breeders for a few weeks and mentioned it to him but didn't talk a lot about it. Then one day I called him at work and said I'm going to get a puppy, will that come inbetween out relationship or are you open to the idea? He's very sweet and knew how happy it'd make me and said to get it. He came over after work and Meeko nestled next to his chest and fell asleep and Ravi fell in love! It's so great to see them together, it makes me so happy! Ravi will call me and ask about Meeko if he doesn't see him everyday, or ask and beg me to come sleep over during the week so he can cuddle with Meeko. lol forget about me, he wants to hug and kiss Meeko.

It's funny though. Before Meeko, Ravi would turn away and get very uncomfortable if a dog approached him. Last weekend he was on his street and he heard a little girl and her dad crying for their dog down the street and noticed the dog was running loose towars him. Ravi went into the street, bent down, and called the dog over and actually PICKED THE DOG UP! I couldn't believe that he picked up a dog! I was soo happy I wanted to cry. To go from being so scared, even of a little 2lb dog, to picking up a stranger dog and bringing him back to his owner. Meeko has been a miracle in so many ways.

BellaAmore 11-14-2008 02:06 PM

Other way around

My husband and daughter had to convince me. I had a dachsund who passed away 6 years ago. I said absolutely no more dogs. Well last year in December the two of them called me begging me and I said no. then they sent me her Pic. I melted. Anyway I don't really consider yorkies dogs. They are like little furry people. My brother says Bella is not a dog, not a cat so he calls her a DAT. They are just total cuteness. Even when they are BAD.:D:aimeeyork

CupofDog 11-14-2008 02:16 PM

hmmmm....maybe that's how I'll know the next man is the 'one' - he should bring me a pup as a gift!!!

My first DH SAID he wanted dogs when we first started dating and even grew up with a Shih Tzu! We baby sat a Cavalier for 3 MONTHS before buying Louis - then when the pup arrived - he freaked out!!!

Ohhh, men. Can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em! But dogs - DEFINITELY can't live without!!

J_is_my_initial 11-14-2008 06:52 PM

We got our first puppy when we had been married less than a month. Over the years we have had several dogs, cats and birds. Oh, even fish and a guinea pig. When we got Gypsy, I told him that I had a hole in my heart that only a little dog could fill. I was looking at poodles when he saw a yorkie and said to get one of those.
When we got Puff, I told him we needed another one and I would buy him a bassett hound (he always sd he wanted one) but he said it would have to be a small dog so it would not hurt Gypsy. So he decided he wanted a chihuahua as a yorkie would be too expensive. I convinced him of a long hair chihuhua so we wound up with Cocoa Puff.

MissSophie 11-15-2008 11:17 AM

My hubby kinda wanted a dog, but he wanted a Golden. I sorta did too, but then I visited a client family that raised Yorkies and fell totally in love.;) I did some research and realized that this was the perfect breed for me. So I talked with my hubby and then found one in the paper. We went to visit the pups, and he was totally hooked. I have asked him several times if he still wants a Golden, and he absolutely does not. He LOVES Yorkies.:animal-pa

yorkie_mama22 11-15-2008 12:08 PM

I wanted a yorkie and hubby did not want another small dog. He thinks yorkies are " a womans dog " lol and said heck no! I found Stormy and showed him pictures, he was not interested! So I convinced him to just go look at her and we could decide after. lol I already knew in my mind I was getting her and he had no choice when I said comon she's so cute plzzzzz lol

maxmom 11-15-2008 12:19 PM

I had done my research, or so I thought, I took the chance and came back home with Max, I could see in my husbands face that he was not that mad, the first thing out of his mouth was- How much?, and I said 1800.00, but still did not show that mad face that he gets so often, when I saw his reaction, I promptly said, Naaaaaaaa, only 950.00. He grabbed Max and started playing with him, and has not stop ever since, they best pals!

MikiLynn 11-15-2008 12:20 PM

Awwww......how sweet your husband let you get one after all! Looking so forward to seeing the new pic of your new arrival!

You sure are!!! I am still in the softening-dh-up process to get to bring a second yorkie here as a companion for Olivia. Not for breeding since she is a retired, spayed breeder - just for company. I'm really hoping after the holidays....

and my third one just appeared one day and licked him.

and my fourth one, she flew home with me from Pittsburg!

I didnt realize I shoulda asked... lol... but he loves them all anyway :)

Gabbymom 11-15-2008 10:27 PM

I just pout and talk about it all the time. Bribe him some. ;)
He finally gives in.

Ashley V 11-15-2008 10:37 PM

I didn't! He had to convince me.

At first I wanted anything BUT a yorkie.

I don't know why, but they just seemed like little froo froo dogs.... now I know better!!!

When he said he wanted a yorkie, my response was "You want a WHAT?!" I tried every other small breed, but he wanted a yorkie... then we got Chip and I fell in love!

Now with Smokey, I just told him that there is a dog in desperate need of a home and we are picking him up tomorrow... end of story. lol
