Hi Everyone! I just wanted to introduce Missy and I.... 1 Attachment(s) She is my first Yorkie and O...M...G! I had NO idea that these little ones were this precious. I mean, I knew that they were cute, but this is a bazillion times more than I was expecting. She is amazing! My entire family of 5 is completely wrapped around this little ones paw :animal-pa Anyways, enough gushin'...I am attempting to attach a picture of my little 7 week, 1 lb Missy and I. Please if you have any suggestions or advice for me, I'd love to hear it. I want to do everything right for this little one. I have purchased her an exercise pen, a crate, she is eating Science Diet slightly softened with warm water. She is using her pee pads diligently, I am so proud of her! Three questions that I have... I don't have her sleeping in my bed at this time as I am afraid of something happening to her. Do any of you use a water bottle or small heater for your puppy? I am worried about her getting too cold in my kitchen at night. It does get a little chillier in that room, not too bad..but I'm still concerned. Also, do you think that I could give her a little bath if I keep the house really warm, and lots of cuddles in warm towels until she's dry? Last question, pee pads are working great for now, will it be difficult to retrain her to potty outside eventually? Will she ever be big enough to use the stairs leading to the outside, or will she use pee pads forever? Thank you everyone, I've learned alot from these messageboards already, and I'm off to read more! :aimeeyork |

science diet is not a good quality food for dogs. i feed milu Nature's variety, but there are also other good quality foods that you can get for your baby. i would not let her sleep in the bed with you...i let milu sleep in the bed with me and my fiance, and now she will not sleep in her own bed at night anymore! that's not good! and i think it's really dangerous for little dogs to sleep in the bed with us!!!(so i really don't want milu to sleep with us anymore! lol ) for baths, i am not sure if your baby is healthy/old enough for baths. make sure you talk to your vet to make sure everything is all good. and the way i wash milu is i start by putting a big bath towel in the dryer, and then i wash milu with my fiance so the whole process will not take too long. when done bathing her, i get the towel out of the dryer so it's nice and warm and wrap milu in it, then i dry her with a hair dryer. (make sure it's not too hot!) good luck! and again WELCOME!:D |

WELCOME TO YT Missy is so tiny and cute!!!! She is just precious!!! |

Oh she is precious! Congratulations! I keep the bathroom door closed so the warmth of the bath water stays in there. I kinda dry them most of the way before letting them out of the bathroom. As for keeping them warm at night (I've gone overboard according to hubby), I have a really, really soft and cuddly blanket in the crates on top of soft folded blankets. Then I have fleece draped over and around their crates. Their crates on in a corner of the family room which butts up to the 3 season sunroom so I always think that it is cool there. My babies didn't have problems with the porch stairs as they are deeper than normal stairs but the garage stairs seemed to be a little difficult to get used to be they did eventually. Good luck. |

Thank you so much for the great advice, and the warm welcome. I feel at home here already :D |

Welcome!!! She is SOOOO cute! What is her name? Science Diet isn't the greatest food, but since you just got her, keep her on the same food. She is under enough stress with the new home that it could upset her tummy to change. Poke around some of the threads that are in the health/diet section to hear what other's feed - and in about a month, you should probably switch. Talk to your vet before bathing...and as for at night, make sure she has a nice cushion under her in the crate and she should be fine! You can always get a small space heater for the room, just keep it far enough from her kennel that its not a hazard...and post more pics!! |

Well she certainly is a cutie! When I first got Mayzie, I bought a baby doll playpen and had it beside my bed. I know, over the top right? Anyway, you already got some good advice before me. I do something similar as yorkiepuppie. I keep fleece blankets going in the dryer during the bath. I towel dry as much as possible and then wrap them in the blankets. They seem to enjoy that. She is very young, so I am not sure when to bathe her. I guess I would ask your vet. Forgot to mention about peepads. I made the decision to pad train Mayzie. She will go outside when she is out playing but 3 years later and we still use them. Mozes was 3 when I got him and he was already housebroken. Welcome to YT! |

Welcome to YT! What a little darling she is. |

Sighhhhhhhh, I'm a little annoyed that a nurse at my vet's told me this morning that Science Diet was good! Are you sure that I shouldn't try gradually switching her to a new food soon? Why feed her crappy food for a month? Thank you for pointing this out to me. I'm open to food suggestions. I've already been over to the other board to see what's available, but there are so many options! It's daunting! |

I highly suggest Natural Balance. And if she has only been home for a few days i'd also wait to change her over- she is VERY tiny and if she were to get diarrhea from the change it could land her in the hospital. When you do change it should be over a several weeks because of her weight. she will probably have loose poop because she is adjusting to the new food but as long as she is eating and drinking she should be fine- if she looks or acts lethargic or has liquid diarrhea- she needs to go to the vet fast! I also highly recommend crating at night! Layla LOVES her crate and it is great for travelling! Congrats on your baby! She is beautiful! |

 Thanks a million :rose: |

i feed milu the raw medallions and the kibbles. she is doing well on it. but i know what you mean about a lot of options!!!! but basically i didn't really get to choose the food for milu. she is extremely picky, i just buy food, and she will let me know if she will eat it or not! |

Welcome! Missy is such a cutie pie!! You will learn a lot here!:D |
|
Wow. Seven weeks? I would be extremely concerned about hypoglycemia and would always make sure she has food in front of her as well as nutrical at the sign of her going downhill. |
|
I know. I am concerned about her only being 7 weeks. She was checked by a vet to go home before I took her (the litter of 4 was), and I selected the strongest, most active of the bunch. She seems fine, just gets chilled easily so I have to keep her warm. But she's eating, drinking, pooping, peeing and playing! Seems like a happy little girl! I hope she does well. I'd die if anything went wrong. |

Please don't take this as rude, but why did the breeder let them go at 7 weeks? Most reputable breeders won't let their pups go until 12 weeks, when they are more stable and have learned several "life skills" from mommy :D. Did something happen to mom? |

Not rude at all, I sincerely appreciate your concern. This wasn't an experienced breeder, it was her first litter. She owns the Mom and Dad, and her vet gave her the go ahead to let the puppies go. He said they were "strong and healthy". They are eating puppy food. Sounds like most people around here usually keep the pups until 9 weeks? I am just SO grateful to be a stay-at-home Mom. I can keep an eye on her 24/7. When I spoke to my vets office today, they didn't seem the least bit concerned with her age and size. |

Hi & welcome....I would not recommend giving her a bath quite yet...she is very small yet and not quite at the age of full bathing yet...you can freshen her up some if you would like, also I use J&J baby shampoo on my pups when it is bath time, I feel that if it is good to use on babies and also tearless, it must be pure enough for puppies. Also getting her of Science Diet it a plus, not very good food...you might mix a little of the SD in with the new food you put her on to help with a poo poo situation. Just keep a close eye on her with her being that young and small without her mama, I am sure you and her will be just fine. Dont feel too bad I got my baby at 7 and a half weeks and havent had a problem with him. like someone said before though, youll have to make sure she knows that biting isnt okay. I have my baby boy on Wellness super five puppy mix He reallllly likes it and he is very picky. other than all of that CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!! you will have so much fun with her :) |
|
First let me say welcome and congratulations on your new adorable pup!!!!! I also got a new puppy who is 5 month old now and named Oreo. For him I use Wellness food. It is Organic, unfortunately found at Petco only, and is really good for them since it has only the good things they need; no by-product, wheat, soy, corn ect. I put the dry food and wet food for puppies and mix them both together then add a few spoonfuls of hot water and mix it all together so the wet food covers the dry food fully. As for the sleeping issue I put my puppy in a large enough crate where he can move around a bit and will fit him as he grows with a small toy and he sleeps beside my bed so he stays warm in my room, but is not developing bad habits in my bed where he could fall off or get easily squashed. He does cry sometimes especially the first few night and it was really hard for me not to take him out and hold him but you have to be strong and tell her no if she does bark. My puppy has been going on pads since he came here and we go for walks every once in a while and now that he is old enough and I try to take him in my backyard, but he will never go outside no matter what i do. I even tried buying a special spray that makes them go potty but it only worked on the pads not outside.so i hope you have better luck then I did. As for bathing I am not sure, but if you do you should keep her in a very warm area of the house (maybe hold her in a room with a lit fireplace?) and change her bath towel if it gets to wet or damp after a while because it will make her colder. Anyway good luck with your new baby and I hope she brings you as much joy and laughs as mine did! |

Your Missy is adorable! I just got a new Yorkie myself, he's 9 weeks and so cute! He is so much more than I was hoping for! I am surprised at how fast he's taken over the house and won our hearts! ALL 4 of US! I am sure you are experiencing the same with Missy. She is beautiful |
