HELP: Rabbit killed by my Yorkie I am freaking out now since Maxwell just killed a rabbit that was in the backyard. I thought it was fun watching him chase it and getting his excerise, but I heard the rabbit moaning. He killed him~! Will he get any diseases from this wild rabbit~? I plan to call the Vet in the am. The neighbor cat was looking what was going on, so maybe he will finish him up. I was scared for him to go out earlier since there was a hawk around. Please help me in this situation. I am scared for him and what he will bring into this house. He's barking up a storm to let him out, and I am not going to do it. |
The one thing I would worry about the most is probably tape worms. My husband is an avid hunter, and when he would bring home rabbit's from the day's hunt...I would not let him bring them in the house to skin and clean because the pelts were alway's full of flea's. Tape worms are passed on to a dog or cat by ingesting flea's. Your little hunter could have swallowed a few flea's while mouthing his prize. :) |
Thanks for the info. I did catch him and brushed his teeth, finally. But I am not letting him inside tonight. He's on the porch barking and whining now. I am calling the Vet and taking him in the am to see him. |
I would die if one of my dogs killed a rabbit...I know its an instinct but...how sad...sorry this happened to you! |
RELAX!! Tape worms are the biggest threat. A little wormer pill and all will be well. Dogs in their history are hunters. Not pretty but very natural. All mine have brought a carcus in the house. Again, not pretty but very natural. As hard as it is, be proud of him.. |

I agree with this, you do know that Yorkies don't have an undercoat like most dogs; they are not meant for great fluctuations in temperatures. |
NEVER let a dog chase a rabbit for fun. Rabbits die from fright, their heart literally stops to a rabbit its not fun. I had a pet rabbit some while which I let have the run of the garden. I had one dog then that ignored him. I got another rescued dog and she tried to chase him around the garden, I put a stop to that straight away. I had to rehome the rabbit as I didnt want to confine him to a hutch all the time. |

i agree with you veganlass... i was hesitant to say anything about it...because i am a chicken...no, just kidding, because i was afraid of making people mad... anyways, it's hard for me because i love rabbits! i know it's in dog's nature to hunt...but it's not human nature to hunt. so yea...i don't like it. plus, at least dogs don't use guns or whatever hunters use... |

As far as our hunting yorkie is concerned... I'm sure he's fine! Worms are easy to take care of. I REALLY hope that little guy isn't being kept outside all night!!! |
