I brought the new guy home last night. I checked out the place we got him and it was an older grandma who had been doing this her whole life. The facility was small...but nice and clean. The puppies had been socialized around her 10 grandchildren. I took him to Petsmart and got him some toys, food, and other supplies...he weighes exactly 4.8 lbs and is SO adorable! He has short little legs but a BIG personality. He's quiet and doesn't bark but as soon as I walked in the door he was playing with our 80 lb Lab and our 80 lb German Shepherd (both are very gentle as well). We named him Toto (I'm from KS...just seemed perfect!) and my husband LOVES him!! Quote:

aww....glad he is fitting in well! we also have a german shepherd that our morkie plays with. it's funny to see the two of them together because of the size difference. put up some pics when you get around to it!! |
So glad the baby is working out!! Post pics! We can't wait to see. :D |
A surprise in weight and lenght I have a Morkie got her when she was 14 weeks old at 1.75 lbs. I was told she would not make 3 lbs full grown She started out looking pure yorkie black and tan short legs and small then took off she is now 6.5 lbs. white ,silver and blonde and long legs .Surprise!! What a transformation I also have 2 other pets a cockerspaniel (Roxie thinks she is mom) and a shih tzu. They all get along just fine .Sisters of all different sizes. Love them all big and small:aimeeyork |
The mixed breeds are just chock full of surprise! You never know what you are going to get....Though I could say the same about purebreds, with my Cavalier King Charles barely making the weight MINIMUM for the breed standard and not having a long fluffy Cavalier coat, LOL!!:rolleyes: Love them all anyway! :p |
if you know the weight of the parents then you will have a general idea of what your pup's weight will be as an adult. |

possibly cuter than the purebreeds, possibly not.. i would consider morkies a breed of their own..:p ckc can register them and provide a complete family history if the parents are registered.. |

I have to say, I am so impressed with Ella Bean - her personality, looks and temperament. I hope that some responsible breeders start 'mixing' these breeds, especially in light of all of the genetic flaws purebreds have. I also LOVE purebreds and totally respect the hard work and dedication of those responsible breeders who work for the betterment of the breed. While a 2 1/2 pound dog like Ella Bean is super teeny, I find her so easy to care for. I really hope that RESPONSIBLE breeders start mixing, breeding for health and temperament as well as size and looks... |

if the parents are akc registered, then i DO know the history.. to me, personally, i think it is important.. but to each his own. althouigh i do have trouble sleeping unless my morkipoo is with me.. such a soft pillow she is..:) the pedigree is my reassurance that they are from good lines.. jmo |

Morkie 4 Attachment(s) I couldn't be happier with my choice of Gucci our little Morkie - After much research about both the Maltese and Yorkie, I decided to LOOK for a Morkie. He has the best temperament and his "attitude" keeps us entertained. He's all of 4.2# at 6 months and while I don't expect him to get a lot bigger, it's not a big thing if he does. You won't know what they're going to look like, but I think we were very lucky. Look at that face . . . How cute is Gucci! Best of luck with your new baby. Kathy |

TOTALLY AGREE. No one is saying the mixes are bad - we all just worry about BYBs and PuppyMills, which as as big of a concern for mixes as for purebreds! I love my little Yorkie mix - but do not consider 'Morkie' a breed as it is not recognized as such. Like all dogs, this mix comes in a variety of shapes and sizes and its pretty ambiguous how your baby will turn out - even if she or he is a great dog! This isn't an insult, just a fact. And if you go back through the thread and read about my precious baby's history and her rescue, you will see why so many people are wary of 'designer mixes' - they often are produced for profit and without the safety and health of the dogs in mind. I think the point is that everyone here LOVES dogs and hates the notion that some could be suffering for our superficial whims and desires. That said, there is no reason why someone couldn't responsibly be breeding healthy mixes from wonderful parents...its just that most breeders and breed fanciers spend so much time and energy improving their breed, mixing is counter-intuitive! Like I said before, I hope some responsible breeders start doing some mixing so that we can breed out genetic illnesses so prevelant in purebreds! |
