Yorkies ears falling over Hello, This is my first post, I have been lurking and reading all the great information on this site. I have a 4 month old male Yorkie named Romeo. He is really a great puppy and has been a joy to have in my life. Romeo has ears that stick straight up in the air, that is how he came to us as a pup. However, in the last two days one of his ears has started to flop over. Is there something I should/can do to prevent this? I really like the way he looks with them both up. Also, when something gets his attention, the floppy ear will still go up, so I guess he can still move it. Thanks in advance for any advice. |
When they are teething sometimes their ears go back down. Be sure to keep the hair shaved off his ears...and trim around the edges as the weight makes them go down too. |
i had the same thing happen to lexi. it drove me nuts. first they were both up, then one up, one down for awhile too.. eventually they both stayed up. i did shave the ears a bit, the hair usually weighs them down |
Some have mentioned that you can tape the ear up....so that it will train it....not sure how to do it....I have heard that works!! So if all else fails...try tape...hehe |
Thank you everyone for the information. I feel alot better now that I know I didn't break them or something...lol |
lol no you didn't break them;) Welcome to YorkieTalk! I'd wait a little while to see if they will go up on their own, if not you can have the shaved, and this should make it work.. if it doesn't, then you will also need to tape them. My youger girl, Evie, had this issue of her ears going up and down, I tried shaving them, but it didn't work (I guess her ears are too big, hehe).. I didn't tape them cause I fell in love with her cute floppy ears. lol. She can still make them stand whenever she wants, but for the most part, they're almost always flopped. |
welcome to YT...i believe its due to him teething.. |
Has anyone every heard of this? On my last litter for awhile all the puppies ears are almost standing erect. Their ear leather is thin and the ears are small... Yahooo!!!! Mom and Dad's ears are stading straight up to the moon...LOL Mom's ears are a tad larger than dads. Has anyone ever heard that if the puppy's ears are not totally standing up at 6 weeks they are not going to be errect? I never heard that before and one of my buyers asked me that question and I told her I did not agree with the breeder that told her that, and I kept thinking about all my of my puppies ears and I know that all these will stand and she will bring her by Monday and I will shave Yogi's ears again. Has anyone ever heard that before. I have read many things, but never heard of that before. |
Aurora is going to be 2 in Jan and she has never held her ears up. When shaved she will hold them up part way. My mom tells her to hold them up and to have yorkie ears all the time.....she tries but can't ever get them up all the way. I gave up a long time ago and I just let her be herself. If she wants her ears flopping, then I guess they will flop. LOL |

When Ninja runs he has floppy ears and it is the cuties thing out! I wouldn't change it for the world!!:animal-pa |
Four out of six pups we had, held their ears up around 14 weeks. The others around 12. I did shave the triangle tip and the hair on the sides. This made them more Perky... |
How To Tape Westie Floppy Ears Here's a website showing how to tape up Westie ears. I found another one that showed a Yorkie and masking tape, which is what I'm trying now. Just lay a flat piece of new wide masking tape behind the ear and lay another a little shorter on the front, then bend the tape over to stick on the other piece. Hope that makes some sort of sense. Good luck! |
Holly's ears were up when I got her at 12 weeks. Then they went down. I taped them. They went up for awhile. Then one went down. I taped it, no luck. The other went down. I taped both. They stayed up for all of a day when the tape came off. They have been down ever since. I kind of like them down, it makes her look like a puppy still. I have always kept her ears shaved, I guess she just has heavy ears. |
Help have a 3 month yorkie, He weighs a hair over a pond and has floppy ears, what can I do, |
Maybe someone knows of a link to a site for shaving yorkie ears properly? I dont want Princess to look like a dork when I am done butchering her. I still have nightmares over my skin daughters kindergarten pictures after i just "touched up" her bangs the night before. Not to mention tweezing half her eyebrow off in the seventh grade. Poor kid. I will never be allowed near my grandkids.:( |
Tiki's ears will stand straight up when she wants something or we ask her something, like : Tiki, do you want to ......pause....ears straight up...go bye bye? I have one picture of her when she had her first real haircut (she looked like a mini Doberman) and she had one ear up and one ear down. Sometimes when she has them up, she moves them back and forth and sideways - like she is trying to make sure she doesn't miss a sound. I call her "Stitch" then because she reminds me of Stitch from Lilo and Stitch. We love her no matter how her ears go. She is just plain cute. :) Myrna |
About the ears drooping... My sweet Cali girl is 2 months and one of hers is drooping..you guys think I should just leave it for now? I felt her gums and I know for sure she is cutting teeth...she loves to gnaw on my finger. I'm not sure about how to tape the ears...do you know of an intructional website? she's doing well with every thing else. She already potties while on the leash. I'm worried about the ear thing tho. Any help or advice would help. Thanks so much-- I LUV MY YORKIE |
It's really simple. I used painters tape. Just fold the ear in half like a V and wrap it loosely but tight enough. It took one day for Jimmys ear to stand back up. Here is a video too |
Wow, thanks for that video. Simple as can be!! I think I will wait a bit to do it, as she is so darn sweet and cute with them floppy. She does stand them up and rotate them when she is listening to me. I can't believe how simple and pain free it looks. Much appreciation!! |
1 Attachment(s) No problem. :) He just bugged with it for a minute. I put the tape on a little crooked (wasn't a perfect fold) so his ear looked funny for a couple days, hah. But it all worked itself out. Here is a pic of him with the tape on. Only took a day! |
Keep in mind that if your puppy is teething and now has a floppy ear it will go back just give it a couple of days or a week. I had the same issue when my little boy started teething but everything went back to normal all on its own. |
Dinky has floppy ears. Sometimes I lift up his ears to see what he would look like if his ears stood up, and guess what he is just as adorable that way too! |
Brews ears were floppy, then up and down. The day after he turned 4 months old, both ears popped up and have been up ever since! |
I almost left Jimmy's one ear down cause he was so cute with it but I was curious to see if I could get it to stand up. Well, lol, it's up now :) |
So you wrap the ear with the non-sticky side? I love them both ways, floppy or perky, they are just too stinking cute either way... |
Gizmo is 1 and still his left ear will flop when he's getting tired! :p Just thought I'd add that in here. |
You'll want to put the sticky side in. The hair doesn't rip off them or anything unless you use duct tape, lol. And you don't want to do that. :) |
Thank you, I was afraid that the sticky side would hurt when you pulled it off. |
