Bobbed or Long Tails?? I have a question.....do you prefer the bobbed tails or the long ones? I have a litter and have had several people ask me about leaving the tails and not getting them bobbed. I have never done that and just curious to know what you all think of that. Thanks! Jill |
I love the shorter docked tails. I think they are so cute and I love when my Tia wags her litlte nub nubbin. :p I just wish they could put them out for this or numb it so that the little babies don't feel anything. :( |
I definitely prefer the long tails! As we're in the Uk its becoming more unusual to see a docked tail! I know some say there can be hygiene issues, but Mika has never had an issue and I'm growing her coat and have never clipped under her tail and never had a problem! Besides if tails were "bad" for them then they would be born without! As far as I know tails were originally docked in ratting terriers mainly because when the dogs went down small holes after their quarry the only way to get them out was to pull their tail and if the tail was long it often broke or became damaged, a docked tail is much sturdier. But I doubt many people want to go around dragging their babies by the tail! I think the "fashion" for a docked tail is dying out (at least, it seems that way to me) and I really hope you decide to leave your babies with their most versatile "limb"!!! |
Got Pics? Do you have any side view pics of your baby with the long tail? I have never even seen one. |
I like long tails. docked is cute too, that's what my Chewy has, and when she's excited it's funny to see her little butt wag and her little nubbin of a tail wag, but I think a long tail would be pretty! And floppy ears. I love floppy ears. |
If these people are seriously interested in your pups... I would get a small deposit from them and leave the tails if that is what they want. I wouldn't leave a full tail unless the pup was too small to have it docked. Good luck with your pups!! :) |
TJ and Roxy have 2 inch tails ~ which I think is way better than just a little numb of a tail. BUT ~ Cuddles and my Mom's boy Cole have Full Tails and I have so say that I LOVE it  Full Tails are really adorable and for some reason I do think it gives the dog more stablity, makes them more aerodynamic. "IF" I get another one, I would be on the lookout for one with a full tail ;) |
poppys fan tail :aimeeyork poppy has a long tail i think that long tails rock  when poppy wags her tail which is quite often it looks like a fan . but i suppose its down to personel choice  love jill n poppy |
i'm amazed at how much i'm learning here! i saw a video here of a gorgeous dog wagging her tail, and totally thought it was a different breed. ROTFL!! i soo didn't even give their little nubbies a thought. lol. how funny. in this house, i think charlie not having a long tail is an advantage, because it would be a handle for the babies in this house. yipe. |

I myself prefer docked. That the way they are suppose to be |
I prefer the look of docked tails and think since that is standard in the US, that is what should be done (unless someone leaves a deposit and asks you not to). If it is done right and at the right time it should cause very little pain and there isn't much risk to it. Ellie has a very short tail (too short) and it doesn't slow her down one bit.:) |
I like the docked tail |
thanks!! OK so they don't curl up really? For some reason I pictured them in my mind as curling up. I have 3 Papillons too and theirs curl up and I think I just had it in my head that Yorkie tail left long would do the same. Thanks for sending the pics, if you have more, I would love to see them. THanks again! Jill Quote:

I have always had my litters docked, and at 3 days old, they cry for about 10 minutes and then they are done, but I was very curious to know what people think, as I am getting several people asking me about leaving them long. Thanks so much everyone and please continue to respond. Send pics if you have one that has a long tail. Thanks! Jill |
I have one girl with her tail and one without and haven't had health issues with either. I had my Molly's pups get their tails docked, not too much fuss. But after my mom had her last litter done a couple of weeks ago, and those 6 puppies crying for 12 hours. I'm not sure that I would want to go thru it again. Standard or not...It really gave me something to think about. JMO:dogsm2: |
this is the video i was talking about... it was a vimeo of a yorkie(?) wagging her tail...by AprilLove, or is it a different breed? Everyday Moments on Vimeo it's the most beautiful thing! i didn't realize that yorkies could have tails, i feel so new, LOL! |
I live in Canada and here is a piece from a local paper: Cosmetic surgery banned for dogs in New Brunswick FREDERICTON New Brunswick veterinarians will soon no longer perform so-called cosmetic surgeries on animals, including docking the tails of dogs or cropping their ears to make them stand at point. The New Brunswick Veterinary Medical Association passed a bylaw at its annual general meeting on the weekend that bans surgeries performed purely for cosmetic reasons. The surgeries are typically requested by purebred dog owners who plan on showing their dogs. Its now considered unprofessional conduct for a veterinarian in New Brunswick to perform cosmetic surgery on an animal, said Jim Berry, a member of the association. The ban will take effect in six months. I don't really have a preference and I also have two Springers with docked tails. BUT to those that say that is the way they're suppose to be (when referring to Yorkies tails being docked) I take exception with that remark. If that is the way they are suppose to be than God (or whomever/whatever you believe in) would have made them that way. Evolution has not made the Yorkies tail shorter, people have. Not looking to start an argument, but let's face it, it's done because someone decided many, many years ago that they liked the look of the cropped tail. Just my opinion. Again, not looking to start an argument, just something to think about. |
i think its about personal preference. i agree that no one should HAVE to do something a certain way. i like my dog's docked tail and i grew his hair really long on his tail so when it wags it looks too darn cute! I've seen both ways & don't see a problem with either. they are cute either way!!! |
We just moved to the UK and got our little Roxy about 2 months ago. We were very surprised to see that she still had her tail, and as someone mentioned perviously it is now illegal to dock puppies tails here in the UK. At first I was a bit dissapointed that she still had it, and I was even looking into getting it docked if we ever went back to Canada, but looking back now I think I was a bit crazy! I love Roxy's tail, she shows so much emotion with it, it wags like crazy when she meets new people or is excited, and she tucks it in between her legs when she's scared. She even chases it when she's really tired or bored. It's so cute, I love it now! :aimeeyork Here are some pictures of here with her cute little tail! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...c/IMG_0957.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...c/IMG_1094.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...c/IMG_1017.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...c/IMG_0958.jpg |
I like'em docked. I love little nubbies!! I have a toy poodle too and her tail is done but its alittle bit longer than Ive seen on other poodles. My brother in law has toy poodles with tails and in my opioin they look like they dont belong. But its getting more common with poodles too to keep thier tails. |
I prefer the docked tail. My male has a longer tail then the other 2 and I find it doesn't look right. |
If I leave for work at just the right time, I see an elderly gentleman walking his Yorkie. The dog has a long tail, which he proudly holds up, flying like a flag in the breeze. Long tails, like nubs, are an indicator of happieness ... it's just that long tails show it more! I beg to disagree about docked tails "being the way they're supposed to be"; if that was the case, they'd be born with short tails. Docking is something done by humans to conform to some rigid sense of beauty. It's the same for dogs whose ears are cut ... they were born with long ears, but it's MAN who feels they should be cut like that. Many European countries are banning docking tails and cutting ears as being inhumane. In fact, if an American dog wanted entry into a European show, they would not be allowed to if they had been "altered". Remember: at one time, the Chinese thought bound feet were the height of beauty, but it (thankfully!) fell out of favor. One day, people will accept our dogs as God created them, without alteration to fit our standards of "beauty". Now, for what it's worth, I truly appreciate the dew claws being removed. They're hard to keep trimmed and can get caught so easily. To me, they're a safety hazard! |

I prefer them docked. I think it looks better and is easier to deal with. Now if yorkies tails curled up over their backs like Maltese do, then I might think differently. |
Personally, I find tail docking pretty barbaric. I love coming home and finding my baby Humps sitting by the door wagging his little tail crazy. I couldn't bear the thought of amputating his tail because it "looks cute". No offense to those who like docked tails, I totally respect their view. |

BTW, those videos had me sitting here grinning ear-to-ear. How sweet are THEY?????:D:D:D |
3 Attachment(s) Attachment 249110 Attachment 249111 Attachment 249112 The first 2 pics are of Dante I decided to keep him from Maggies first litter so I didn't get his tail done. The last pic is Leo we also ended up keeping him. Maggie had 4 pups. female was the stud fee they wanted to keep her tail Dante was staying with me so I left his tail i had 2 buyers for the other 2 males that wanted to keep their tails. Well I got deposits and one boy went to his new home at 12 weeks. Leo however ended up not going anywhere because although I had a deposit and the person was adamant about getting him, they decided at the last minute that they didn't want him. So although I tried to find a good home for him, after that I was even more picky as to where he was going. So hubby decided to just keep him. So the moral of this is. Even though you get a deposit there is no guarantee that they will or will not follow through. So if the people that don't want you to dock their tails want to pay in full right now then I would get them docked. Don't get me wrong I love both my boys to death but because of what we went through with Leo all my future litters will be docked. Unless someone changes the standard or someone pays in full when they are born with the understanding that they won't be getting all their money back. |

how about the dew claws? do they cry a lot when that's removed as well? my baby has docked tail and dew claws removed. (except they didn't do the dew claws correctly, so i had to have it done again when she was getting spayed) |
