It's probably because she lost a tooth, but make sure there are no double rows of teeth. Most of us have had to have a few teeth pulled when neutering because Yorkies seldom lose all their teeth on their own, and the double row can cause food build up, and stinking breath. Using Petzlife once a week, isn't enough dental hygiene, I recommend using it twice a week and brushing 3 times a week. The Petzlife softens the tartar and the brushing takes it off. You can find inexpensive children's toothbrushes at the dollar store and get a toothpaste made for dogs, Joey loves a poultry flavored one, and because they like the taste of it, they won't fight you as much when you brush. They will chew on the toothbrushes so get several. I also recommend Bully Sticks, because I think the sticks help scrape the teeth.

I used to brush my doxies teeth all the time cuz they loved it, but the vet said once a week should be fine!

ok thats not too bad :) hopefully she will just get used to it like she did with taking a bath :)

ok cool ill look into that i have the poultry plavored paste i just have to find the right brush...we had this tooth brush with like 3 brushed in one but its waaaaaayyyyy to bulky so just a regular childrens tooth brush?

That's what I use; they have very small head. The dog toothbrushes at Petsmart have a small head with very long handles, and with a Yorkie, you don't need the long handle. They do get better with this over time, they will fight at first, but if you are calm and assertive, they won't fight too much.

I use a cats toothbrush its the perfect size,and i brush 3 times a week,at first Harley hated it but now he is fine.

Science diet has a food called DD which help break off the plaque, its formulated in a speical way......

I'm convinced that some dogs just have bad breath. Roxie is one of them. I feed her dry food. I have tried everything to combat her bad breath odor. Her teeth are pearly white and no plaque. But she still has bad breath. I have searched and searched for answers and can't seem to come up with anything. She's 1 1/2 and nothing makes sense to me why her breath is so darn stinky! :eek:

i think a lot has to do with genetics...:mad:

I am so glad I found this thread. Gwen just had all 4 adult canines pop through (but her babies for them are still hanging in there) and as soon as I noticed those little tiny nubs (they're still little nubs btw) the next day I noticed her breath could knock you over it is SOOOOO bad! I've never had this problem before with my other dogs but for such a LITTLE TINY dog (she'd almost 6 months old and about 5pounds 10 ounces or so) she has the worst breath I have ever smelled. I just went and bought some children's toothbrushes at Wal-mart last night (2 for like 0.94 not a bad price...and they are Peanuts characters) so I was hoping I was going at this the right way.

My vet tells me that bad breath sometimes is brought on by the anal glands being full... You might check on that....Becky and Maggie:animal-pa

LOLOL Oh gosh that just cracked me up. I have to agree... My sister's yorkie has the stankiest breath ever!!! And nothing helps..not brushing...toys, chews, or breath mints!!!! LOL

When I try to brush Maxs teeth he completely FREAKS out.. I cant hold him without ( almost) hurting him.. I tried the finger solution also but had no luck there.. He really really hates it.. Do I just keep on trying every day until he accepts and figures out that I am not doing this to hurt him?

If you are noticing any type of tooth/gum issues, they should be brushed everyday. The action of the brush is more important than any product you could use but I still recommend toothpaste. It might help some. I'm not going to get into a Petzlife debate again but please search it on YT. It is a very questionable product. Ellie ate mostly kibble for years and still had horrible teeth. Although plaque may build up faster from canned food (which is debatable), kibble doesn't do much of anything to clean teeth (unless you get a diet forumulated to do it like Hills T/D). Most kibbles break as soon as they hit the teeth, so not much cleaning can take place. Now Ellie eats homecooked (wet) and gets her teeth brushed and we floss and use OraVet. They seem to be much improved after oral surgery and with daily (well almost daily) care.
