Both of my Yorkies were microchipped as 6 month old puppies. They are 3 pound Yorkies. They were fully awake and only had a novacaine type pain relief med. It was no big deal at all for either of us. The needle for insertion is big for the size of the dog so if you are squeemish, don't watch and have a tech hold your dog. The worst part of the entire ordeal was the shaving for the procedure. They were afraid of the clipper noise and they Vet overshaved the neck/back of my male so he looked really weird for some time. I would never not microchip such small cute dogs. My Yorkies can squeeze in and out of anything. They escape fences and crawl out and over ex-pens constantly. I am always afraid that people will steal them because they are so cute! I know its stupid but if I leave them in my locked car for 25 seconds I run back to the car expecting them to be stolen because they are so cute. I am a little paranoid, I know. My male is very bad about staying in where he is supposed to so I know at least I have him chipped and registered everywhere should he ever get lost and someone is honest enough to turn him in. |
I've had a few dogs microchipped in the past, the most recent being my Chihuahua bitch. When I had her done she was just 11 weeks old and teeny but she was absolutely fine. It's a big looking needle so you'd think it'd be painful but I've not met a dog yet whose even noticed when they have it done. Dont worry, it's not a big deal, and if you ever lose your dog you'll be so relieved you did it! Jess :heart to |
Now I'm wondering if there is a difference between brands as far as it being painful. Gracie was microchipped during a regular office call when she was three months old. She didn't even flinch and showed no signs of tenderness where the chip was inserted. Her's is the Avid chip. |
We had our yorkie micro chipped and spayed on Aug 7th of this year. She did great .... we have Avid chip .... I personally feel better that I will have a greater chance of her being returned to us, in the event she gets out the door on her own. Also, we did not put the Avid tag on her ... just in case someone finds her and is reluctant to take her to the vet because of this. She is tattooed as well. All my furbabies have been microchipped. I fell it's a must. Yes there are different ones, if they use the wrong scan the chip will still beep telling them there is a chip in there. I have a friend who almost lost her Yorkie, Both people had pictures of her, she ran up to both when called. The Police had no idea who she really belonged too. It was the chip that got her to her right mommy. Princess who just hates going in for shots didn't even feel her chip going in, she was playing with the nurse.:D Our Vet who has been with us for over 25 years likes all furbabies to be chipped, it's the only way you can be 100% sure she's your's.;) :2hearts2: |
Padre's microchipped and we haven't had any problems with it at all. He came chipped from the breeder and I highly recommend it! One thing to remember is that if you're number or address changes, you have to call the company to update your information so they can find you! We totally forgot to do that until the vet reminded us, oops. |
