Congratulations on your new addition, how exciting! I have purchased an adult yorkie in the past. Don't worry too much, you will bond and soon be attached to each other!

Bernie was a year old when we got him, and he was in love, love, love with his foster family. Yes, he seemed a little freaked when we drove away...but it didn't take long until he adopted us.

First of all I would not feel bad because the baby did not have a name. Only you know the one that fits him/her.

Jack/Bella/did not have names when I got them but there personally fits there names now.

First off, Welcome to YT and Happy Birthday!!!!!!!:D I have found what I think is a great store online or they also have a catalog to order by mail. Great prices on most everything it is carealotpets.com, check it out for tags, harness with attached leash, shampoo, bows you name it!:thumbup: Also, my sister got her fur baby about a year ago, she had 2 previous homes, it took maybe a week and that dog was like obsessed with my sister! It's like the little girl my sister never had. She did'nt change her name, she thought about it, then decided not to, her name is Disney. Bottom line, she is doing great and so so spoiled rotten! Yours will be fine too! Have you got him yet? Good luck! Congratulations!

I forgot to say earlier that, Daisy came to live w/ us when she was two years old and had, had two homes previous to ours. She was a bit skiddish at first, but it didn't take long for her to warm up. Now she absolutely LOVES my son and of course her Mama and Daddy :) The feeling is mutual.
I wonder sometimes if she misses her other homes? She has it pretty good here though, so I'm confident that she's very happy!

Something you might try to get him used to his new name is have a really nice treat ready. (maybe boiled chicken or cheese or whatever he really likes) and call his name whenever he looks at you, and give him a treat. Eventually, start calling his name, and if he stops to look at you, give him the treat. He'll love his new name! :D

Welcome to the wonderful world of living with a Yorkie..they are the BEST dog beautiful, loyal, and loving. I read the best way to help a dog learn it's new name is to call both together with the first name followed by the second name and then start gradually using just the second name and giving rewards when you say that second name.

As I mentioned, today (Oct, 4) is my birthday! And it couldn't be a better 25th b-day!!

• They are running an extremely low cost vet clinic tomorrow. For a Rabies, Distemper and a check-up by a great vet costs $25! I can't go wrong with that, so we are going as soon as I get my lil' Yorkie!

I have one more important question: The dog has had is name for 2 years. He has spent most of the time in his kennel as his owners have not had time for him. Would it be cruel to change his name, if it sounded the same and started with the same letter? Would he get used to it, or should I keep it as is?

You've got quite a list did you list puppy pads and odor neutralizer for those accidents in the house? So by now you have brought you baby home... right? How are things going? Also something to consider you may want to train your baby to use puppy pads instead of going outside, I have a 5 year old who thinks grass is for sunbathing!! She is well trained to the potty pads and trust me at 6:00 am in the morning or on cold or rainy days I am sooooooooo glad I don't have to take a dog outside to use the bathroom... a small yorkie is very easy to scoop the poop up and flush so odors are not a problem and the pads are kept in 2 places only the patio and laundry room. I find the arm and hammer brand are the best they cost a little more but well worth it because you don't have an odor. Even when I take her to my office I have a pad on the carpet it is never a problem. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR POTTY PADS ARE THE WAY TO GO :):):thumbup:

We changed our dog's name and she picked it right up....we chose a name that sounded similiar to hers.....then my daughter got an older yorkie and changed her name to something completely different...and she still recognized it after a week or so.........

Looks like you are ready for that baby!!! And definately sounds like the pooch is getting a WAY BETTER home!!!! Just be patient and you'll get that loyalty you want...it just takes time....and as soon as that baby see's your treatment is so much more wonderful...you'll have a precious little loyal lovebug on your hands!!! :D
