Beverly Hills Chihuahua likely to cause a surge in abandoned Chi's With the new Beverly Hills Chihuahua Disney movie, rescue groups and shelters are expecting a surge of abandoned Chihuahuas. People go out and buy one for the kids after seeing the movie, not understanding the responsibilities, and abandon them later after the novelty wears off or reality sets in. The American Dog magazine sold here in Denver and Chicago is offering a free subscription to those who buy their kid a toy Chihuahua instead and send in the receipt. The American Dog Magazine: Your Dog. Your Family. Your Lifestyle. Chihuahua rescues are gearing up. You can do your part by boycotting the movie and discouraging people you know from buying a Chihuahua just because they thought it was cute in the movie. Educate them about the responsibilities and commitments of owning a pet, especially a tiny one. Chihuahua Rescue We rescue Chihuahuas at Chihuahua Rescue. As seen in People magazine, TV & more- Sanctuary for over 200 dogs. A similar crisis happened after the Disney 101 Dalmations movies. So here we go again. |
I bet it will Look and 101 spotted dogs ... wrong bred for many families. Lassie Rin tin tin Littlest Hobo Babe and the border collies Air bud And on and on When poeple see just the oh so cute must have and not what a dog is they get and then they give up. GRRRR JL |
i understand people are going to buy chis, after the movie and there will be problems just like with 101 dalmations but everyone is free to do what they want and if someone wants to produce the movie they will...thats their right...yep will probably be some chi s looking for new homes...and its not right or fair but just because some people are ignorant enough to buy them just because of the movie, the whole movie should be removed from the public? not looking to get slammed just a different view |
Yes, I believe in personal responsibility. I've been trying to find out whether Disney at least is donating some of the profits to Chihuahua rescues and shelters. So far I haven't found any such news. That would be the ethical thing to do. |

Yes fools will do what fools will do what they do but it ok for those of us not fools to see where this is going and be worried. We can all see that Puppymills will be getting more chi's in to meet the need. profittering off of a dog is not a good thing and Walt is doing it again. JL |
Most of the dogs in the movie are rescues Hopefully people will want a dog like that & go check out some rescues. |

Disney should at least produce a commercial or something at the end of the movie making people aware of this problem, or at least say "hey if your going to get one anyway, get a rescue first." |

i didnt comment on the magazine thing..but i think thats stupid but if it wasnt related to the movie and breeders could pass out free subscibitions to yorkie magazine i do think thats kinda cool |

So there is a free magazine but can we think about the responsiblity of ownership first. Free stuff makes people do silly things. Oh and if we can get some of the profit from the movie and a comercial with a puppymill.. heres where you dog will come from if you jump and do not do your home work that be great. JL |

You misunderstand; the Magazine People are saying get a free subscription to our magazine, if you buy a STUFFED ANIMAL Chihuahua, instead of a real dog. See the link: The American Dog Magazine: Your Dog. Your Family. Your Lifestyle. To the OP, I don't think you should encourage people to boycott the movie, Disney makes movies about pets, and you could say this about lots of their movies. The overall message is usually a good one, and why should the rest of us not get to see it, just because some ignorant person, will go out and buy one afterwards? Maybe we could encourage the Disney people to have a public announcement before or after the movie. |
oh my gosh..... i didn't realize people did things like that. I've never let a movie influence my decision to buy something or not. But i do see how this is a big concern. |
[QUOTE=Nancy1999;2261350] QUOTE] Will so see I missed something that ok too... free chi and a free mag great stuffed is better then a live one. I was not saying do not go to the movie go have fun by all means. What was said is that we are going to see an increase of chi in puppymills. Lets go along more where are those dogs going to fit. Keenels will not expand they will kill dogs already there. Oh and if I was really being picky wonder how these dogs are trained. Oh and like the last movie about dogs with the little huskies just how many got killed in the making of it? JL |
i think the magazine is trying to PREVENT people from going out and buying a chihuahua...cause they want you to buy a stuffed one...not a real one!! I actually have a little stuffed chihuahua ...its Pasquale's second favorite toy. I would hate to make a decision on whether Disney was in the wrong without having seen the movie. In today's society people make alot of prejudgement calls before seeing ALL the facts. Just my opinion. |

i also think that it would benefit if they did a commercial or preiview about doing your home work, talking to a rescue and showing footage from puppy mills...that is a great idea |
Remember the taco bell dog? I remember seeing ads in the paper under pets for "Taco Bell Chihuahuas" when that was popular. |

[QUOTE=Nancy1999;2261400]QUOTE] We are all allowed to make miatakes and move on. Rubbing it in is not needed as I tend not to make many. Enjoy while you can as today is my mistake day. But this does not stop the issuse of dogs getting bought cause of this show nor where they will come from to fill the need. Does it? You really think a free magazine with a stuffed chi going to change a whole lot? There are dogs in harms way and we are quibbling over a magazine hummm?? Seriously?!? JL |

I think you are missing the point that the magazine is trying to educate the public, and education is what it's all about. |
Disney has made a lot of movies with dogs in it and I happen to enjoy watching them. People will always do stupid things. So the rest of us should have to pay for their mistake as well? I do think there will be more Chi's found in shelters after the movie and I feel bad that this will happen but the solution to not making the movie at all isn't a good solution either. The public just needs educated more and I would like to see Disney put a disclaimer in the movies about the ownership of a dog is not to be taken lightly. I just don't understand how someone can see a dog on tv or with a celebrity and all the sudden want one without knowing anything about them. We are talking about a living, breathing animal that takes a lot of responsibility to care for. People should have common sense but unfortunately a lot of people don't. |
Perhaps the best disclaimer Disney could add to this film - the animals in this movie are ANIMATED. |

Been a ton of stuffed dalmations and lassies and benji and snow dogs and other TV dogs later and we have no puppy mills. No aggressive damaltion being put down. what they miss doing is the free magazine that will fix it all. Eddie the jack was the other dog I was thinking of.. lots of jacks in trouble after that show started... everyone wanted a jack and they are not an easy dog sometimes. People only see what they want to see... dogs are things to own and to use and take care of as they will. Living breathing play toys and dress up items to to many. JL |

Apparently Disney is taking some responsibility for the likely outcome in surge of Chihuahua sales that will later be abandoned. I just found this article. Here is an excerpt: It turns out that several of the Chihuahuas in the film were rescue dogs found in shelters in Los Angeles and Mexico, according to Disney's promotional materials. The lead dog, known in the movie as Papi --the face of the movie on all the posters around town -- was rescued from the Moreno Valley Animal Shelter and lives with his trainer.Full article: Chihuahua movie protest | L.A. Unleashed | Los Angeles Times So hopefully this will help. But shelters none the less are gearing up. The Dalmatian problem was huge for shelters. I still haven't found anything about Disney donating to them. There's already a huge problem with Chihuahuas in shelters in Los Angeles. |
Months after the Taco Bell commercials came out there were many Chihuahua's in pet stores, ads, and shelters. I got my Chihuahua, Delsi, may she rest in peace, back in 1992 (long before any commercial with this breed) so I was more than a little sick and tired of almost everyone one we passed saying "yo queerer Taco Bell" I bet I heard that a thousand times and got so sick of it!!! Anyway.......I don't think any commercial or movie should be banned just because it has certain breeds and so on. Focus on banning all the guns and killing movies instead. |
My frustration comes from the fact that today I got a back handed offer of a deaf brain damaged Border collie through a neighbour that knows a BYB breeder that had a BC cause she like them in babe and snow dogs and thought it be fun to breed. I got the offer cause I am able to manage dogs with issuse, She thought she could back me into a corner and make me take it... yeah deaf is one thing but brain damaged and other concerns cause it not seen a vet is another. Here is this 6 week old puppy that is more like 4 weeks and no chance at a life cause some fool though a dog on show was cute. ( I have one I fight to keep alive as it is not able to do another now) I see this over and over and over and over. I have held and worked with puppymill dogs that have no chance at a normal life. I have seen one nasty dalmation.. ok more then one but he was ugly. I have a dog of my own that is mess and I love but has limited chance at normal cause of it start in a BYB and although not a movie dog is a top ten breed. I did not choice for the fact it was top ten. My tempers been somewhat cranky today and I have said words to a person off line and not in the group I never use. I am not into banning anything...oh ask me what I think of breed bans....LOL So the dogs came from rescue great but where are they now, do we know? JL |
I wouldn't boycott the movie just because people can make decisions for themselves and if they are irresponsible enough to get their children a dog when they cannot care for it then that is their own decision and fault. A movie isn't going to make someone do something. I actually like the fact that there is a dog movie, i love movies about dogs, there have been plenty of them before, as long as no dogs were harmed in the making of it i don't see anything wrong. It looks like a fun movie, i cant wait to see it. |
