I didn't get a lapdog at all :( my yorkie is almost 16 weeks old so he is teething and hasn't been neutered yet so I'm hoping that is a factor. my puppy is either chewing me or something else and is running around like a crazy dog OR sleeping. there is no in between of him cuddling and just sitting on my lap. Once in a while he'll lay next to me on the couch but will eventually move b/c i think its uncomfortable for him. I let him sleep with me also and he'll start off sleeping next to me but only for like 3 minutes and then he'll move. He does follow me every where as I mentioned in the other thread but there's no cuddling for a prolonged time. will he start to calm down and just be a lapdog??? that's why I really wanted a yorkie b/c they're so cute and affectionate lap dogs. |
He's just being a puppy! You need to be patient. He'll start to calm down as he gets older.. Franklin was noticeably calmer and cuddlier around 8 months. |
Well he is still puppy...but not all yorkies are lap dogs. Ramsey will lay by me...but rarely wants in my lap ever. Reggie is my lap baby. |
;)When Daizy was younger she didn't want to stay on my lap either.....and then my sister would come over and she would just hold her Sophie in her arms and that little stink would just stay in her arms quiet as could be..and eventually her head would drop and she'd fall asleep!!! So I asked her what she did...she said she just help Sophie..whether she liked it or not ....and eventually she just became more tolerant of it. So I started holding Daizy for longer periods of time...even walking around with her in my arms...and now she will lay on my lap as long as I want her too....But I had to get her used to it ......although I would make sure that you let your little one play alot before you try it.....if it's tired...they will be more tolerant....eventually....lol hope it helps! |
Most yorkies are not lap dogs. They are terriers in a toy package :) |
Yeah, I remember thinking the same thing with Eddie. He was going a mile a minute. But at about a year, he started to mellow out. And occasionally, he'll grace me with a cuddle or two. Jack, on the other hand, lives on my lap. |
Ah puppyhood! :) He will come down as he will get older. My Maxi was crazy as a puppy. Now 1 year later he demands to be on my lap  |
I use to think the same thing when Meeko was younger. It just taked a while for them to calm down. Meeko is 11 months now and I can't get him away from me. He has to be touchin me at all times. After he's nuetered and not worrying about chasing females you'll start to see him getting better. Don't worry, it'll happen. :D |
well i have to say i must be one of the lucky ones...cause from day 1 that i brought Pasquale home...he has always been a cuddler. In fact, he's sleeping in my lap right now as i type. He even cuddles with my husband! I would say just try to hold him as much as possible so he can get use to it. |
Chip calmed down after his neuter. He was a cuddler when we brought him home (at 7.5 weeks) and that lasted for about 3 weeks or so, then he was a little heathen (I say that with love), and after he was about 8 months when we got him neutered and his vaccine reactions, he calmed down. It seemed like after the last time he got seriously sick was when he calmed down... they had to give him a steroid shot. Smokey was already fairly calm from the time we got him at 6 months. |
Baxter is 9 months old and neutered and still wild. The only time he wants to be a lap dog is if he has been playing with my sister's dog and is just completely tired out. Otherwise, he's wide open. |
I think they all have different personalities, and some are just more "terrier" like than others. Bailey is a whirlwind!!!!! He is a love and very affectionate, but he has things to do! The rest of my "herd" is a mix. They are also different ages. A puppy is certainly going to be more active! |
Not all of them are lap dogs one of mine isnt but the other one is. I think it depends on the yorkies personality |
I'm thinking about age 2! Good Luck! Puppies can be exhausting!! |
Max is all terrier. He has caught two small possums, a chipmunk (ewww) and is constantly chasing things in the yard or looking for things to chase. He will sit by me for short periods of time but he's too busy to cuddle. Even when I pick him up and try to steal a hug, he starts attacking the collar of my shirt or butting my cheek with his head. He's a mess...and then some! |
My Diva is almost 1.5 and she still does it. She will lay on the couch but she doesn't like to be under me all of the time. At nite she will get close but not all of the so your dog isn't the only one.:) |

Your looking at three years to four sometimes as they are not fully grown mentally until then. For now work on swapping a cuddle for good food treats and match good things happen if you let me touch. JL |

I think A Yorkie has A mind of their own, and decide to do whatever , "they want to do on their own terms" Suzi sometimes is wanting to cuddle, sometimes no ! She also moves around all the time like she can't decide where to sleep. I thought it was because she was hot that she did not want to sleep on the bed anymore , or jumps off then back on later on. She is 7 months , and can get to be very excited and full of energy too, then just plop down and take A nap . I think they love to play, Dig, and please, however, on their own terms... AND I also believe they are like humans, in which they have their own unqiue Temperments . |
thanks for all your responses...i think he's just going through his puppy stages and wants to exlore everything! |
They are not all lap dogs, a lot of them are hyper and just love to play. He is a puppy so i would say give him time to calm down but he may also be hyper when he's older. You just never know what you will get. I have 2 lap dogs and one that doesnt like to cuddle much or be held at all, he will get his belly rubbed tho and massages, etc lol |
My Yorkie is a lap dog. He also follows me around the house. When he gets hyper, I tell him to settle and he calms down. I love the settle command. I taught him the command by accident. When he got hyper, I held him still and said settle. Once he remains still, then I let him go and said good boy. I amazed my family with this command that sometimes it seems like a new trick. :D |

My little one is 13 weeks. She lays better on my lap if I spread a blanket or sweat coat on my lap first (I think it seems safer, like she won't slip off) plus she thinks she is the little princess... she never lays directly on the floor,it's either on her bed, on a blanket, on my Collie's bushy tail (no joke!) or on my lap. Although when she is hot, she looks for cooler places to lay. She hates my heated blanket, it's too warm for her. |

I hope mine cuddles. I want to take mine everywhere..!!!!! I love to cuddle with my baby and I will be combing her several times a day. That's how you get them loving to be touched. You are consistent with it. I will be enjoying the new arrival soon. I can't wait. I will have a great time with being a new mommy.!! I just ordered Minnie's new washable pee pads. Thank goodness those will be in time. |
