Red legged Yorkie
 

Hi All
My beloved Groomer and I were talking she said that my Mia is a red legged Yorkie
Which means she will never grow the long silky coat and will not have hair on her ears
Does anyone else have a coat like this

She is beautiful and Debbie the Groomer says many breeders bred this coloring in every 4th generation
Anyone else heard of or have a Red legged Yorkie
Please do not get me wrong I LOVE MY MIA I justed want to grow her hair to the floor and I think because of her coat I can not

My Sissy had a reg-legged momma and she got many of her traits in her coat - especially her legs. Sissy is now three years old and she has never been trimmed (other than her hiney). This is her most recent nekked photo (we don't have many of them). Her coat has definitely gotten thicker since adding grizzley salmon oil into our daily regimen.

My Peanut looked like Sissy. His coat was thin and sparse, but he had the prettiest face. I've often wondered if I'd had him on a better diet if it would have made a difference.

I use pro pet for coat and skin in my girl's food each morning.

Your avatar is very small, so it's hard to see. Tobey has really thin hair on his legs- almost "wispy-like". I keep him in a puppy cut because his body is so thin that if his face hair grows too long, he looks out of balance. I don't know if he is "red legged" though..... how do you tell? I saw both of his parents at the breeders when I bought him... they looked like normal yorkies but at the time I didn't know much about the breed like I do now.

Your Sissy reminds me so much of Peanut. I keep coming back to this post and looking at that sweet face. We lost Peanut on 1/02 of this year. I miss him so much :(
I have pictures of him in my album from Christmas of last year. I had never realized that Sissy looked so much like Peanut.

BTW, can anyone explain exactly what a red legged yorkie is?

I think that my little Gus is a Red Leg. I also have his 1/2 brother Chip and his hair grows so fast, but little Gus, his hair grows very slow, and very thin. It doesn't seem to grow at all on his legs. I will attach pictures I took of them the other day. The smaller one is Chip, and the taller one is Gus. It really doesn't matter to me I love them both very much.

I had one for almost 20 years . She looked like an Australian Terrier . She never grew up a coat but she was the most adorable little one .

You're avatar is difficult to tell anything. I went to your profile and looked at pictures there, as well. With those shots, It's just too difficult for me to tell. Do you have picts of her standing that you can post?

Red Legs are reported to be prized by the old-time breeders. Even tho they did not have silk coats and were unable to grow coat, they were considered great for bringing color and believe it or not correct texture back into a line. I don't know anyone today that has one in their breeding program but I find it very interesting history.

I'm sorry for the loss of your little Peanut. Feel free to look at Sissy's photos anytime if they bring a smile of remembrance to your face!!!!!

My girls get yogurt in the morning for breakfast and are on The Honest Kitchen (freeze-dried raw) for dinner. The food, along with adding the Grizzly Salmon Oil has definitely made the coat thicker and longer.

Sissy's coat is strange. Her head and neck and shoulders are very silky, but from the lower part of shoulders on down, it gets very coarse. I have been using Silk Spirits by CC following her bath and that has helped some, too. It is hard to tell on the photo I posted, but she has very sparse hair on her legs (although the back of the legs has definitely gotten longer) and feet.

With red-legged yorkies, their coats simply do not grow much. The good news is you save on grooming bills. As I said, Sissy has never been trimmed. What you see on her face, body & legs is how she is. Her coat has gotten thicker and little longer in the past 6 months, but she is now 3 years old, so I don't expect many changes. Red-legged yorkies also have a tendency to have a very red color, particularly on their legs, rather than the gold or tan of others.

Sooo Cute! I've seen a few red legs, and they look a bit like cute little foxes!!:D

Tobey looks alot like Gus- long legs and all!! with the thin wispy hair on the legs that doesn't grow. I think he is probably not red legged but just has thin hair- like some people have thick hair and some have thin, even within the same family:rolleyes:

I feel certain that Peanut was a red legged yorkie after reading all these replies...something I never knew when he was alive. I wish I had the knowledge that I have now about yorkies when Peanut was alive. Although I know he was happy here, I knew nothing about how to properly care for this breed. He came to us from a farmer who found him wondering in a cornfield. The farmer tried to find his rightful owner, but they were never found. So, we knew nothing of his past. If only he could have told us...

My girls are loved, but no more than Peanut was. Poor little baby, I miss him so much.

Abby and Daisy are on Canidae until this bag is gone, then we're switching their kibble since the forumla was changed and then they have NV raw once a day. Abby has the most beautiful thick coat. Daisy's coat is thin and sparse, but so shiney and lays so beautifully. She was rehomed to us in April. Abby came from a breeder.

I was lucky enough to come across my charlie..he is a 2 1/2 year old handsome red leg yorkie and has been an asset to my breeding program.He is also very silky on the head and neck slightly coarser on the body.he has gotten many haircuts over time but his hair like all red legs does not grow long.

sometimes i wonder if pebbles is a "red leg" because her hair is soooo red .. it is very rich, like red hair on a human head... also the hair on her legs and feet is not as long as the hair on the rest of her body

The coloring of a red-legged yorkie is pure beauty! I can see how having one in a breeding program would create more vivid colors. All your red-leggs are really beautiful. :)

are you asking me? i have a lot in my picture gallery... your mias color looks a lot like pebbles.. i dont have many pictures of her without clothes though :p

I owned a redleg, she is now retired. Her saddle is deep charcoal and her gold is a beautiful shade of red/gold. I bred her to Connor and got my first show bred-by dog, her name is Denali. Redlegs are usually very strong, bringing forth the traits of their ancestors. First pic is Roxie my redleg, second pick is her daughter Denali.

hum.. pebbles coat looks more like denali's than roxie's... so that makes me think shes not actually a regleg.. her red is a litter redder than denali's is on the legs though

Denali's legs are very bright gold and her coat grows pretty well. It's a very fine silk and didn't begin to break color until she was almost a year old. Her face is darker and her head is slow to clear. Lee has one of my pups that are out of my redleg, the second pic is Sage.

I had to add My Maggie. She is a definite redleg and like Jodie's Sissy her hair on her head is silkiy and the body hair is coarse.

I didn't know you had a true redleg. The gold is moddled like bits of toffee are thrown in, a sure sign. They are as strong as an ox aren't they?
